Significance of Incidental Nasopharyngeal Uptake on (18)F-FDG PET/CT: Patterns of Benign/Physiologic Uptake and Differentiation from Malignancy.

PURPOSE: Mutations in bestrophin 1 (BEST1) are associated with a group of retinal disorders known as bestrophinopathies in man and canine multifocal retinopathies (cmr) in the dog. To date, the dog is the only large animal model suitable for the complex characterization and in-depth studies of Best-related disorders. In the first report of cmr, the disease was described in a group of mastiff-related breeds (cmr1) and the Coton de Tulear (cmr2). Additional breeds, e.g., the Lapponian herder (LH) and others, subsequently were recognized with similar phenotypes, but linked loci are unknown. Analy

Early versus delayed mobilisation for aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Rebleeding is an important cause of death and disability in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). In order to prevent rebleeding, the preferred strategy is aneurysm ablation (removal) as early as possible. However, in clinical practice some patients are not suitable for surgical treatment, or prefer conservative treatments. In some countries, therefore, total bedrest for four to six weeks has been considered one of the basic interventions to avoid rebleeding. However, the influence of bedrest on outcome in patients with SAH is not well known. OBJECTIVES: To esta

Gender disparity in early death after ST-elevation myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Females with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) have a higher risk of adverse outcomes because of receiving less evidence-based medical care. Our aim was to investigate the gender disparity in early death after ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in the current era. METHODS: A total of 1429 consecutive patients with STEMI in the Liaoning district were analyzed. We compared hospital care and cardiac event data by sex for in-patients with acute STEMI within 24 hours of symptom onset. RESULTS: In the emergency reperfusion group (n = 754), in-hospital mortality occurred in 4.2%

[Comparison of data from registries of acute coronary syndromes RECORD and RECORD-2: management of patients and its results in noninvasive hospitals].

Positive changes are declared to occur during recent years in management of hospitalized patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) in Russia. Most of these changes are related to availability of invasive treatment. But considerable portion of patients (pts) are still treated in hospitals without facilities for invasive myocardial revascularization (noninvasive hospitals - NIHs). Aim of this study was to compare some characteristics of management of ACS in NIHs which participated in ACS registries RECORD (2007-2008, 8 NIHs from 6 cities; n=381) and RECORD-2 (2009-2011, 3 NIHs from 3 cities,

Readmission, mortality, and first-year medical costs after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability and mortality in Taiwan, resulting in a tremendous burden on the healthcare system. The purpose of this study was to characterize disease burden by evaluating readmissions, mortality, and medical cost during the first year after acute stroke under the National Health Insurance (NHI) program. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study extracted information about patients hospitalized with acute stroke from claims data of 200,000 randomly sampled NHI enrollees in Taiwan, with a 1-year follow-up duration. The incidence of the first-year a

[Survival of women with breast cancer, of a city in the south of Brazil].

A retrospective cohort study was carried out aiming to evaluate the survival of 655 women with breast cancer, seen in the Single Health System, Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil. For the analysis of survival, the method of Kaplan-Meier and Cox model was applied. The survival according to the staging of women was significantly different in accordance with the results of the test of Log-rank Test. The rate of risk of instantaneous death between the stages I/II, I/III and I/IV was 3.26, 15.40 and 25.51, respectively. These findings are in consonance with literature data, and indicate that the sta

Temporal trends in sudden infant death syndrome in Canada from 1991 to 2005: contribution of changes in cause of death assignment practices and in maternal and infant characteristics.

The rate of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) declined significantly in Canada and the US between the late 1980s and the early 2000s. In the US, this decline was shown to be due in part to a shift in diagnosis, as deaths from accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed and from other ill-defined and unspecified cause increased concurrently. This study was undertaken to determine whether there was such a shift in diagnosis from SIDS to other causes of death in Canada, and to quantify the true temporal decrease in SIDS. Cause-specific infant death rates were compared across three periods:

Fluoroquinolones and the risk of serious arrhythmia: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Fluoroquinolones have been suspected to cause cardiac arrhythmia but data are lacking, particularly for the individual fluoroquinolones. We assessed the risk of serious arrhythmia, defined as ventricular arrhythmia or sudden/unattended death identified in hospital discharge diagnoses, related to fluoroquinolones as a class as well as for each individual molecule. METHODS: We used a cohort of patients treated for respiratory conditions from 1 January 1990 to 31 December 2005, identified using the healthcare databases from the province of Quebec (Canada), with follow-up until 31 Mar

Unusual death due to a bleeding from a varicose vein: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Varicose veins are a common entity presenting a worldwide distribution. Although they are usually benign, sometimes are proved to be a threatening condition. Massive hemorrhage is an unusual complication of this common venous pathology that demands immediate medical intervention. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 66-year-old woman found dead in her house surrounded by a large quantity of blood. Autopsy revealed a 7 mm ulcer on the internal surface of the left lower leg communicating with a varicose vein, signs of exsanguinations and liver cirrhosis. Toxicological analysis

Use of postmortem human dura mater and scalp for deriving human fibroblast cultures.

Fibroblasts can be collected from deceased individuals, grown in culture, reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), and then differentiated into a multitude of cell types, including neurons. Past studies have generated iPSCs from somatic cell biopsies from either animal or human subjects. Previously, fibroblasts have only been successfully cultured from postmortem human skin in two studies. Here we present data on fibroblast cell cultures generated from 146 scalp and/or 53 dura mater samples from 146 postmortem human brain donors. In our overall sample, the odds of successful d

Incidence and causes of sudden death in a university hospital in eastern Saudi Arabia.

Sudden death is non-violent, unexpected death occurring less than 24 hours from the onset of symptoms. In this retrospective descriptive study we report the frequency and main causes of sudden deaths in relation to total deaths at a large university hospital in the Eastern region of Saudi Arabia over a 6-year period. The medical files of 1273 consecutive deaths were retrospectively investigated and showed 223 (17.5%) cases of sudden death. Males were 56.0% of cases. The incidence of sudden death was highest in the 2 age extremes (32.2% were infants and 31.4% were elderly). There was a seasonal

SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths: expansion of recommendations for a safe infant sleeping environment.

Despite a major decrease in the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) since the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released its recommendation in 1992 that infants be placed for sleep in a nonprone position, this decline has plateaued in recent years. Concurrently, other causes of sudden unexpected infant death occurring during sleep (sleep-related deaths), including suffocation, asphyxia, and entrapment, and ill-defined or unspecified causes of death have increased in incidence, particularly since the AAP published its last statement on SIDS in 2005. It has become increasingly im

Postmortem computed tomography is an informative approach for prevention of sudden unexpected natural death in the elderly.

INTRODUCTION: Less than 10% of unnatural death cases have been examined by autopsy in Japan. In particular, the causes of death in the elderly have not yet been actively investigated. Here, we evaluated the possible use of postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) to investigate the causes of sudden unexpected natural death (SUND) in the elderly. METHODS AND SUBJECTS: Death cases confirmed within 24 hours since the onset of symptoms at the Emergency Department of Mie University Hospital were defined as sudden death cases. A total of 212 sudden death cases, including 175 SUND cases, that occurred

Hangman's fracture: a historical and biomechanical perspective.

The execution technique of hanging, introduced by the Angle, Saxon, and Jute Germanic tribes during their invasions of the Roman Empire and Britain in the 5th century, has remained largely unchanged over time. The earliest form of a gallows was a tree on which prisoners were hanged. Despite the introduction of several modifications such as a trap door, the main mechanism of death remained asphyxiation. This created the opportunity for attempted revival after the execution, and indeed several well-known cases of survival following judicial hanging have been reported. It was not until the introd

Impact of the Family Health Program on the quality of vital information and reduction of child unattended deaths in Brazil: an ecological longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Vital information, despite of being an important public health instrument for planning and evaluation, in most of the developing countries have still low quality and coverage. Brazil has recently implemented the Family Health Program (PSF), one of the largest comprehensive primary health care programs in the world, which demonstrated effectiveness on the reduction of infant mortality. In the present study we evaluate the impact of the PSF on mortality rates related to the quality of vital information: the under-five mortality rate due to ill-defined causes and unattended death.
