Ill-Defined Deaths in Slovenia: Implications for Mortality Data Quality and Burden of Disease Studies.

INTRODUCTION: Ill-defined deaths (IDDs) are deaths assigned non-specific or insufficiently informative causes that do not identify a distinct underlying disease or injury. They reduce the accuracy of mortality statistics. In Slovenia, the overall proportion, structure and distribution of IDDs have not yet been comprehensively evaluated. This study examined the most frequent IDDs and their demographic and regional patterns in Slovenia from 2010 to 2021. METHODS: Individual-level mortality data from 2010 to 2021 were analysed. Deaths assigned ICD-10 codes denoting vague/non-specific conditions

Masked divergence in cancer mortality following COVID-19 disruption.

BACKGROUND: While overall cancer mortality in the United States has declined steadily for decades, systemic healthcare disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic-including delays in screening, diagnosis, and treatment-may have created heterogeneous impacts across different malignancy types that are not visible in aggregate data. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether site-specific cancer mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2023) deviated from expected trajectories based on established pre-pandemic trends. METHODS: This population-based analysis utilized U.S. National Vital Statistics System

Recent changes in trends of mortality from cervical cancer in Southeastern Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the trends of cervical cancer mortality in Brazilian Southeastern states, and to compare them to Brazil and other regions between 1980 and 2020. METHODS: Time series study based on data from the Sistema de Informações de Mortalidade (Brazilian Mortality Information System). Death data were corrected by proportional redistribution of deaths from ill-defined causes and cervical cancer of unspecified portion. Age-standardized and age-specific rates were calculated by screening target (25-39 years; 40-64 years) and non-target (65 years or older) age groups. Annual percentage

Unveiling the Burden of Miscoding and Misclassification in Stroke Mortality: Analysis of Multiple Cause-of-Death Data in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of risk factors for cerebrovascular diseases in Mexico is increasing although stroke mortality declined from 1990 to 2010, without meaningful changes afterward. While improving access to adequate prevention and care could explain this trend, miscoding and misclassification in death certificates need to be assessed to unveil the true burden of stroke in Mexico. Practices in death certification along with the presence of multi-morbidity could contribute to this distortion. Analyses of multiple causes of death could reveal ill-defined stroke deaths, providing a glimpse

Temporal trends in cause-specific mortality in a rural-provincial area of Denmark, Lolland-Falster, 1970-2018.

AIM: In Denmark, rural-provincial Lolland-Falster currently has the highest mortality, caused mainly by the high mortality of in-migrating people. To identify possible preventive measures to combat this excess mortality insight into the underlying diseases is needed. METHODS: We used data from Danish registers to calculate cause-specific mortality for 1970-1979, 1980-1989, 1990-1999, 2000-2009 and 2010-2018 divided into cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, external causes and other causes (all remaining causes). We calculated age-standardised mortality rates for Lolland-Fals

Readmission, mortality, and first-year medical costs after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability and mortality in Taiwan, resulting in a tremendous burden on the healthcare system. The purpose of this study was to characterize disease burden by evaluating readmissions, mortality, and medical cost during the first year after acute stroke under the National Health Insurance (NHI) program. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study extracted information about patients hospitalized with acute stroke from claims data of 200,000 randomly sampled NHI enrollees in Taiwan, with a 1-year follow-up duration. Temporal trends in sudden infant death syndrome in Canada from 1991 to 2005: contribution of changes in cause of death assignment practices and in maternal and infant characteristics.

The rate of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) declined significantly in Canada and the US between the late 1980s and the early 2000s. In the US, this decline was shown to be due in part to a shift in diagnosis, as deaths from accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed and from other ill-defined and unspecified cause increased concurrently. This study was undertaken to determine whether there was such a shift in diagnosis from SIDS to other causes of death in Canada, and to quantify the true temporal decrease in SIDS. Cause-specific infant death rates were compared across three periods:

SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths: expansion of recommendations for a safe infant sleeping environment.

Despite a major decrease in the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) since the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released its recommendation in 1992 that infants be placed for sleep in a nonprone position, this decline has plateaued in recent years. Concurrently, other causes of sudden unexpected infant death occurring during sleep (sleep-related deaths), including suffocation, asphyxia, and entrapment, and ill-defined or unspecified causes of death have increased in incidence, particularly since the AAP published its last statement on SIDS in 2005. It has become increasingly im

Understanding the coronary heart disease versus total cardiovascular mortality paradox: a method to enhance the comparability of cardiovascular death statistics in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) represents the largest share of cardiovascular disease in the United States, but there are conspicuous discrepancies between CHD and total cardiovascular death rates across the states, possibly due in part to variations in physician assignment of causes of death. Our aim was to identify exogenous individual- and community-level predictors of cause-of-death assignment and variability and to use these predictors to improve the comparability of CHD mortality estimates across states. METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed a multinomial logistic regression analy

Changes in the classification of sudden unexpected infant deaths: United States, 1992-2001.

BACKGROUND: Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) makes up the largest component of sudden unexpected infant death in the United States. Since the first recommendations for supine placement of infants to prevent SIDS in 1992, SIDS postneonatal mortality rates declined 55% between 1992 and 2001. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this analysis was to examine changes in postneonatal mortality rates from 1992 to 2001 to determine if the decline in SIDS was due in part to a shift in certification of deaths from SIDS to other causes of sudden unexpected infant death. In addition, the analysis reviews the c

Factors associated with fetal mortality in the triethnic population in texas, 1993 through 1995.

We examined the underlying causes of fetal deaths reported for 1993 through 1995 in relation to the mother's ethnicity, reproductive history, and medical factors listed on birth and fetal death certificates. The overall fetal mortality rate (FMR) was 6.3 per 1000 live births plus fetal deaths, and 5.6, 5.9, and 9.8 per 1000, respectively in pregnancies of white, hispanic, and black women. Preterm birth (low birth weight) was a major predictor (or consequence) of fetal death, and extremes of maternal age, increased parity, and plural pregnancies were also associated with increased FMRs, especia
