Is the apparent rise in cancer mortality in the elderly real? Analysis of changes in certification and coding of cause of death in England and Wales, 1970-1990.

The effect of changes in recording and coding of cause of death on trends in cancer mortality in England and Wales in persons aged 45 and over during 1970-1990 is reviewed. During this period, all-cancer mortality rates increased only at ages over 75 in males and over 55 in females. Rises in cancer mortality were largely due to increases in cancer of lung, prostate and unspecified site in men, and of lung, breast and unspecified site in women. Death coding and certification artefacts were much larger in older persons. In those aged 75-84, a change in the position of recording cancer on the dea

Mortality and cancer incidence after cerebral arteriography with or without Thorotrast.

Mortality and cancer incidence among 999 neurological patients exposed to chronic alpha-particle irradiation from 232ThO2 (Thorotrast) administered for cerebral angiography in 1935-1947 was compared to that of 1480 similar patients examined with cerebral angiography without Thorotrast in 1946-1963 (controls). The ratio of standardized mortality/morbidity ratios (SMRs) for patients exposed to Thorotrast and controls was the relative risk, which was analyzed by multiplicative regression (RRREG). For mortality from all causes, RRREG was significantly increased mainly due to cancer, benign and uns

Half-century of cause-specific mortality experience of chemical manufacturing employees.

Cause-specific mortality was surveyed among 23,180 male (580,000 person-years) and 3,860 female (86,898 person-years) employees with 1 or more years of service from 1940 through 1989 at a large chemical plant. Vital status was ascertained for 99.1% of the males (n = 5,658 deaths) and 98.6% of the females (n = 355 deaths). Comparisons of observed mortality with expected levels based on any of three population comparisons (United States, Texas, or five local counties) showed lower mortality for all causes of death, diseases of the circulatory system, diabetes mellitus, and cirrhosis of the liver

Reliability of cancer mortality statistics in Ontario: a comparison of incident and death diagnoses, 1979-1983.

We compared the underlying cause of cancer death listed on death certificates, to the registry diagnosis from the incident file in the Ontario Cancer Registry (OCR). For the 68,772 cancer deaths having both a registry diagnosis and a cancer cause of death, 79.3% agreed between the two sources at the third digit level of ICD-9; this rose to 85.8% when sites were aggregated into about 30-site groups (positive predictive value 85.8%, sensitivity 82.9%). The most common sites, accounting for greater than 80% of all cancer deaths, all had agreement rates above 80%. Sites of questionable reliability

Mortality among a large cohort of chemical manufacturing employees.

Cause-specific mortality was surveyed among 19,608 male employees with 1 or more years of service between 1940 and 1980 at the Texas Operations of Dow Chemical U.S.A. Vital status was ascertained through 1980 for 97.3% of the cohort members, and death certificates were obtained for 96.4% of the 3,444 decedents. Mortality risks were found to vary, depending upon which of 3 population groups (United States, Texas, and local counties) was used for comparison, although significantly fewer than expected deaths from all causes was a common finding due to significant deficits in diabetes, diseases of

The loss from premature deaths of economically active manpower in the various populations of the RSA. Part I. Leading causes of death: health strategies for reducing mortality.

Age-adjusted mortality rates (MRs) per 100 000 for the leading causes of death were calculated for 1970 for Asians, Coloureds and Blacks and compared with the MRs of Whites for the economically active age-group of 15 - 64 years. Marked differences in mortality patterns were shown by this comparison. At the one extreme were the Whites in whom the five leading causes of death in rank order were ischaemic heart disease, motor vehicle accidents, cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), cancer of the digestive system and bronchitis and associated respiratory diseases--a mortality pattern which is character
