BACKGROUND: Little is known about the correlation between microbiological yield and radiographic activity, on chest computed tomography (CT), in suspected pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) cases, despite CT being widely used, clinically.
METHODS: We used multicenter retrospective data, obtained from medical records, focusing on the diagnostic performance for definite PTB. We categorized patients into four groups, by radiographic activity: definitely active, probably active, indeterminate activity, and probably inactive.
RESULTS: Of the 650 patients included, 316 had culture-confirmed PTB; 190 (29

Objective to assess the different localizations of tuberculosis (TB) in children in a pneumopediatric department in Tunisia and to describe its diagnosis tools since clinical investigations of childhood TB are challenged by the paucibacillary nature of the disease and the difficulties in obtaining specimens. Methods Forty-six cases of TB in children were studied between 2008 and 2013. Clinical history, examination and chest radiography were reported. Several investigations have been conducted to confirm the diagnosis of TB such as: tuberculin skin test (TST), bacteriological and histological i

BACKGROUND: Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) related to tuberculosis (TB) is an exacerbation of an inflammatory response that most often occurs in HIV-infected patients but it has also been observed in non-HIV immunocompromised hosts. We describe two cases of TB associated IRIS with CNS involvement, one in a patient diagnosed with HIV infection and the other in a patient with immunosuppression due to anti tumor necrosis factor treatment. CASE REPORT; The first case was a 40-year-old man, newly diagnosed with HIV infection, who developed right hemiplegia and expressive aphasia

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease mostly due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is frequent in developing countries and its incidence is rising in developed countries. Lungs are the most involved organs of the chest but other structures can be affected. Imaging is fundamental in the management of the disease. Confirmation of diagnosis can be made only by bacteriologic and/or histologic exams. The first approach of diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms and chest X-ray signs. Radiologic signs depend on patient's age, his immune status and his previous contact with M. tuberculosis. Conventio

Analysis of acid-fast bacilli stains on sputum smears for the diagnosis of tuberculosis has a long history, but quality control for acid-fast bacilli in histologic sections is not as well established. In tissues, necrotizing granulomas are closely linked to positive cultures for mycobacteria. However, the practices of pathologists examining acid-fast bacilli in surgical specimens are not well described in the literature. This study characterizes practice patterns related to the histologic interpretation of acid-fast bacilli stains. A survey invitation was sent to 1299 pathologists including me

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is not a uncommon problem throughout the world particularly in the developing countries like Nepal, India and Bangladesh. Abdominal Tuberculosis accounts for nearly 2% of tuberculosis worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathological profile with the help of other investigations in the diagnosis of patients with abdominal TB and their response to anti-tubercular therapy. This was a prospective cross-sectional study conducted in the department of Gastroenterology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka during the period of

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis presenting as an isolated liver tumour, without active pulmonary or miliary tuberculosis, or other clinical evidence of tuberculosis, is distinctly rare. A greater awareness of this rare clinical entity may prevent needless surgical intervention.
AIMS: To help characterise this distinctly rare presentation of tuberculosis, five new cases are presented, together with a review of the world literature. The clinical, laboratory, radiological, and pathological features of these patients are described.
METHODS: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay of the liver tissue was

OBJECTIVE: Miliary tuberculosis (MTB) is difficult to diagnose. When prompt diagnosis is necessary, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect mycobacterial DNA may be valuable.
SETTING: Tuberculosis clinic in an academic tertiary-level hospital in Mexico.
DESIGN: Bone marrow (BM) aspiration samples from 30 consecutive clinically suspected MTB patients and 58 non-tuberculosis hematologic patients were evaluated by in-house PCR using a fragment of the insertion sequence IS6110; results were compared with those obtained by acid-fast-stained smears, culture in Löwenstein-Jensen medium, histo

In some cases it is difficult to define an etiology of lung tumour in the other way than thoracotomy. In these diagnostic difficulties patients with tuberculous tumour are also involved. The aim of the present study was to define if A60-ELISA test, a new valuable tool in the diagnosis of tuberculosis, might be useful in the differential diagnosing of lung tumours. The levels of IgG antibodies against A60 antigen of mycobacteria was measured with the use of the ELISA test. 228 persons were enrolled into the study: 58 healthy controls (Group I), 26 nonmalignant and nontuberculous patients (Group

From February 1979 to May 1994, 18 cases of colonic tuberculosis were detected by colonscopy at Chang Gung Momorial Hospital, Linkou Medical Center. There were 10 males and 8 females, with mean age of 43.6. In ten, the diagnosis was confirmed histologically or bacteriologically in colonic biopsy material and post-operated lymph nodes. The remaining 8 patients was suspected on colonoscopy, and had good response to antituberculous therapy. The major symptoms were abdominal pain (83%), diarrhea (67%), and body weight loss (61%). Average duration from symptoms to diagnosis was 4.1 months. Chest X-

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: An increasing number of diagnoses of pleural effusions (PE) have been made over the last 8 years in the Department of Internal Medicine of the Centre Hospitalier de Kigali, Rwanda. In order to determine the aetiology of PE and to examine its possible association with HIV-1 infection, we performed an aetiological work-up, including thoracocentesis and pleural punch biopsy, of all new patients with PE of undetermined aetiology referred to the Division of Pulmonary Diseases of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Centre Hospitalier de Kigali between 14 September 1988

A 67-year-old female patient with tuberculosis of the nasopharynx is reported. The diagnosis was confirmed on histological and bacteriological examination of a biopsy from her postnasal space. There was no evidence of any other active foci of tuberculosis but she had had a right nephrectomy 45 years previously for renal tuberculosis. A review of the literature on nasopharyngeal tuberculosis shows this to be a very rare disease in the absence of active pulmonary involvement.

AIM: to examine recent trends in tuberculosis in New Zealand.
METHODS: histologically and bacteriologically confirmed cases of tuberculosis notified to area health boards from 1985 to 1990 were analysed.
RESULTS: a total of 843 cases were reported during 1985-90 for an average annual incidence rate of 4.2 cases per 100,000 population; incidence rates for each year were similar. The incidence of tuberculosis was higher among males than females and increased with age. Maori were five times more likely to develop tuberculosis than Europeans, Pacific Islanders were 10 times more likely, and pers

The morbidity from juvenile tuberculosis in the GDR amounts presently to 0.6 per 100.000 in the age group 0 to 15 years. The GDR's centre for treating children affected by tuberculosis is the above hospital for lung diseases in the town of Harzgerode. Between 1980 and 1983 a total of 89 children (48 boys and 41 girls) with various forms of tuberculosis have been treated there. The anamnesis of the children with lung tuberculosis was largely unspecific, only 6 from 29 had pneumonia or pneumonia was suspected respectively. All patients with abdominal tuberculosis had pains in the peritoneal cavi

An analysis of patients diagnosed as having tuberculous lymphadenitis (the second commonest form of tuberculosis after respiratory tuberculosis) in 1980, was carried out to ascertain the pattern of disease and methods of diagnosis. Of 114 cases so notified, 97 were available for this purpose. Diagnosis was on lymph node biopsy with histological examination and/or bacteriological culture confirmation. Patients with tuberculous lymphadenitis tended to be young (more than 60% below 31 years old), and to have cervical involvement (88.6% of cases). A female preponderance (as in other studies) and a

Laparoscopy demonstrated sarcoidosis in 79 of 94 proven cases. In addition, it made it possible to assess the involvement of intraabdominal organs which cannot be judged clinically or biochemically and may not be parallel to changes in the thoracic X-ray. Extensive liver sarcoidosis was revealed in 12 and required treatment independent of other organ manifestations. Miliary exudative or cavernous pulmonary tuberculosis in 15 cases revealed gross non-specific changes in one, miliary foci of the liver surface in 13 and coarse nodular infiltration in one. In each case the visual findings were con

Five patients with progressive fibrotic lung disease are described. The dominant symptom was slowly increasing dyspnoea, and cough and sputum were not prominent. Marked weight loss was also a feature. There was severe restrictive impairment of ventilation with normal arterial gas tensions. The changes were confined to the upper parts of the lung in some but others had more generalized disease. The duration has varied so far from two to 17 years. The lung changes are considered to be due to dense progressive fibrosis. Necropsy in two confirmed this. Histologically there was monotonous fibrosis
