Impact of long-term ivermectin (Mectizan) on Wuchereria bancrofti and Mansonella perstans infections in Burkina Faso: strategic and policy implications.

Parasitological and clinical surveys were used to determine the long-term impact of ivermectin on the prevalence of Wuchereria bancrofti and Mansonella perstans filarial infections, when the drug was given under community-directed-treatment strategies for onchocerciasis control. The study was undertaken in 11 communities in south-western Burkina Faso. Six of the villages investigated had been treated with ivermectin at least once a year for five of 6 years, with a mean coverage of approximately 65% in each round. The other five, adjacent villages, which were matched with the ivermectin-treated

Abnormal depolarizing patterns in three patients with filarial infection.

Several authors have described a particular potential of automated depolarization analysis in detecting malaria infection as part of the routine full blood count (FBC) performed by the Cell-Dyn 4000 analyzer. In these cases, abnormal depolarizing patterns are due to the presence of leukocyte-associated malaria hemozoin, a pigment which depolarizes the laser light. In this report we describe samples from three individual patients who did not have malaria infection but showed abnormal depolarizing events. Further investigation determined that these samples were from patients infected by the nema

Transfusional Mansonella perstans microfilariasis.

Mansonella perstans filariasis is widely distributed across the center of Africa and equatorial America. We describe a case of post-transfusional M. perstans microfilariasis in a young child, affected with severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria, admitted in Goundi Hospital in South of Chad. A decrease of M. perstans microfilariasis in the patient's blood was observed, with no subsequent development of either clinical symptoms or eosinophilia. We suggest that, in endemic areas, transfused M. perstans microfilariae may be cleared from the blood over relatively short periods of time. It is likely t

Effects of thiabendazole in Mansonella perstans filariasis.

Mansonella perstans is a human filarial parasite distributed across the center of Africa and equatorial America. Although M. perstans infection is asymptomatic in most individuals, a variety of symptoms have been described, including angioedema, pruritus, fever, ocular involvement, and serous cavities pain. Eosinophilia is found in many cases. Treatment with diethyl-carbamazine or mebendazole is often ineffective. We present a study on the effects of thiabendazole in the treatment of symptomatic M. perstans filariasis. Twenty-five patients were treated with thiabendazole at a single dose of 50

Which anxiety disorders may differentiate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, combined type with dysthymic disorder from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, combined type alone?

The basis for life is the ability of the cell to maintain ion gradients across biological membranes. Such gradients are created by specific membrane-bound ion pumps [adenosine triphosphatases (ATPases)]. According to physicochemical rules passive forces equilibrate (dissipate) ion gradients. The cholesterol/phospholipid ratio of the membrane and the degree of saturation of phospholipid fatty acids are important factors for membrane molecular order and herewith a determinant of the degree of non-specific membrane leakiness. Other operative principles, i.e. specific ion channels can be opened an

Efficacy of repeated doses of ivermectin against Mansonella perstans.

Treatment of Mansonella perstans infection, although seldom necessary, is difficult. In a 3 year's trial of normal and high-dose annual and 3-monthly ivermectin treatment against Onchocerca volvulus, the effects on M. perstans were recorded and related to the cumulative dose received. The World Health Organization's African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control may thus reduce the endemicity of M. perstans.

Case report: intraocular localization of Mansonella perstans in a patient from south Chad.

A case of Mansonella perstans infection with visual impairment and a retinal lesion is described. After a course of diethylcarbamazine and a further course of mebendazole the symptoms improved and the microfilariae blood concentration decreased. The symptoms and response to antifilarial treatment strongly suggested the intraocular localization of an M. perstans worm.

Characterisation of nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences from Onchocerca volvulus and Mansonella ozzardi (Nematoda: Filarioidea) and development of a PCR-based method for their detection in skin biopsies.

The internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1, 5.8S gene and ITS2) of the two filarial nematodes Onchocerca volvulus and Mansonella ozzardi was sequenced, and two species-specific primers designed in the ITS2 to develop a PCR-based method for their specific detection and differentiation. When used with a universal reverse primer, the two species-specific primers gave amplification products of different size, which were readily separated in an agarose gel. The PCR was tested on skin biopsies from 51 people from three localities in Brazil where M. ozzardi is present, and results have been compare

Simuliid blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) and ceratopogonid midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) as vectors of Mansonella ozzardi (Nematoda: Onchocercidae) in northern Argentina.

Mansonella ozzardi, a relatively nonpathogenic filarial parasite of man in Latin America, is transmitted by either ceratopogonid midges or simuliid blackflies. In the only known focus of the disease in north-western Argentina the vectors have never been incriminated. This study investigated the potential vectors of M. ozzardi in this area. The only anthropophilic species of these Diptera families biting man at the time of the investigation were Simulium exiguum, S. dinellii, Culicoides lahillei and C. paraensis. Using experimentally infected flies S. exiguum and both species of Culicoides allo

Loa loa and Mansonella perstans infections in Ijebu north, western Nigeria: a parasitological study.

The prevalence and intensity of Loa loa and Mansonella perstans were studied in three villages of the Ijebu north area in Ogun State, western Nigeria. Blood samples were collected by finger-pricking from 373 (181 males, 192 females) subjects with an age range of 4 to 55 years. The blood samples were examined microscopically for the presence of microfilariae (mf). L. loa and M. perstans were present in the blood samples in 39 (10.5%) and 12 (3.2%) of the subjects, respectively. Neither of the infections were found to be sex-dependent. The geometric mean of the L. loa intensity was 1.8 mf per 50

The feasibility of a bed net impregnation program to enhance control of Malayan filariasis along a swamp forest in southern Thailand.

The purpose of this study is to document the potential feasibility of using a bed net impregnation program to enhance the control of Malayan filariasis in southern Thailand. A survey was conducted in one Muslim and one Buddhist village along the swamp forest in Narathiwat Province. Face-to-face interview was employed to collect data on practice of bed net use, knowledge and attitudes on filarial control and acceptance if a bed net impregnation program were to be introduced. Bed nets were used by 98.5% of the study households. Both Muslims and Buddhists were all in bed by 23.00 hrs. By 03.00 hr

The prevalence of parasite infestation and house dust mite sensitization in Gabonese schoolchildren.

BACKGROUND: Allergic diseases seem less prevalent in communities in less developed parts of the world, where parasite infections are highly prevalent. Altogether not much is known about the association between chronic infections with tissue and blood-dwelling parasites and atopy. METHODS: In an area in Gabon endemic for blood and tissue parasites, 520 schoolchildren were parasitologically examined and skin prick-tested for a set of common environmental aeroallergens. Levels of allergen-specific IgE and polyclonal IgE were measured. RESULTS: In schoolchildren schistosome and filarial infectio

Environmental factors and the distribution of mansonelliases in southern Venezuela.

The distribution of mansonelliases and their relation to various quantitative criteria were determined through the study of 1,057 subjects in 17 localities in ten regions of Amazonas State and Bolívar State. The total prevalence among the blood samples, determined through the Knott technique, was 18.54%. 11.26% were parasited by Mansonella perstans, 9.93% by Mansonella ozzardi, and 2.63% by both species. The average of microfilaremia was 48.19 mf/mL of blood in M. perstans and 13.79 mf/mL in M. ozzardi. In the regions studied, M. ozzardi has a wider area of distribution than M. perstans. Preva

Use of the recombinant Onchocerca volvulus protein Ov20/OvS1 for the immunodiagnostic differentiation between onchocerciasis and mansonelliasis and for the characterization of hyperreactive onchocerciasis (sowda).

The protein Ov20/OvS1 was used as antigen in ELISA and Western blot in order to differentiate onchocerciasis from African mansonelliasis and to characterize the hyperreactive form of Onchocerca volvulus infection (sowda). The specificity of the IgG4 Western blot was 98% for the differentiation between persons with onchocerciasis and Mansonella microfilariae (mf) carriers (125 persons with M. perstans and 92 with M. streptocerca), whereas the IgG4 ELISA showed a specificity of 81% in 137 M. perstans mf carriers and 85% in 94 M. streptocerca mf carriers. Diagnosing and treatment of skin filariases based on own observations.

7 cases of Mansonella perstans filariasis and 9 of Loa loa invasion were diagnosed and treated in the clinic of the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine in Gdynia in the years 1993-1999. The study group comprised 7 women aged 15-45 and 19 men aged 32-49. The most frequently occurring symptoms and signs of the disease, results of laboratory tests, diagnostic methods, ways of treatment and their efficacy were discussed. The diagnosis was made on the basis of the presence of filaria larvae in peripheral blood and, in part, on positive serological reactions. The most frequently reported and
