Lipoma is a benign, rare, mesenchymal tumor found in the head and neck region, especially in the parotid gland. It thus requires a careful and precise examination to establish a diagnosis. A surgical procedure of the parotid gland is challenging due to the associated risk factor of facial nerve injury. We report a rare case of head and neck region lipoma between the superficial and deep lobe of the parotid gland. A 44-year-old female patient was presented with the chief complaint of a painless lump on the left front ear to the left cheek for about 1 year. There were no complaints of tooth pain

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has made facial masks an essential part of daily life. While protective facial masks are crucial to help the spread of viral infections, they are common causes of facial skin breakdown, acne, and superficial injuries. Masks with elastic ear loops are also particularly likely to cause ear pressure injuries.
CASE REPORT: Herein, we present a case of a patient experiencing homelessness found to have significant postauricular wounds due to prolonged mask use in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. These injuries led to bilateral erosion of the helix with partial

The study analyzed vascular variations in microtia associated with hemifacial microsomia (HFM). A retrospective analysis was conducted on 47 patients with microtia and HFM, who underwent computed tomography angiography between November 2011 and May 2022. The vascular course and branching supplying the TPF were analyzed. Craniometric measurements were conducted to determine the horizontal distance from the porion and fronto-zygomatic suture (F-Z suture) to the vessels. On the affected side, the TPF was primarily supplied by either the superficial temporal artery (STA) or the postauricular arter

ObjectiveBurns and injuries can lead to massive defects in the mastoid tissues, which increase the difficulty of ear reconstruction. It is crucial to choose an appropriate surgical method for these patients. Here, we introduce strategies for auricular reconstruction in patients without satisfactory mastoid tissues.MethodsFrom April 2020 to July 2021, 12 men and 4 women were admitted to our institution. Twelve patients were severely burned, 3 patients experienced car accidents, and 1 patient had a tumor on his ear. The temporoparietal fascia was used for ear reconstruction in 10 cases, and the

Ludwig's angina was first described in 1839 by German physician, Wilhelm Frederick Von Ludwig as a rapidly and fatal progressive gangrenous cellulitis and edema of the soft tissues of the neck and floor of the mouth with rapid spread to other places like anterior mediastinum. However, Type 2 acute myocardial infarction (MI) due to Ludwig's angina has not been documented. A 62-year-old male presented to the emergency department with visible anterior neck swelling for 1 week, which was preceded by a tooth arch 1 week prior, the patient presented with a high grade fevers, dysphonia, dysphagia, an

Temporal bone fracture is a relatively rare but significant complication of traumatic head injury. We present a rare and unique case of traumatic temporal bone fracture with middle ear effusion, in a 76-year-old woman, following a fall. Physical examination on presentation was remarkable for a superficial scalp hematoma in the occipital region, without any focal neurological deficits. An initial non-contrast head CT revealed a large posterior scalp hematoma and subtle changes suggestive of artifact vs. hemorrhage within the right temporal lobe. Over two days, she developed a worsening headache

OBJECTIVE: Temporoparietal fascia is important for auricular reconstruction or repair after auricular reconstruction. Thus, the course of the superficial temporal artery (STA) is of vital importance to prevent destruction of the artery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the course of the superficial temporal artery in patients with congenital microtia and its relationship with remnants.
METHODS: This was a prospective study. Patients with microtia who underwent auricular reconstruction in our hospital from January 2021 to July 2021 underwent ultrasound examination of the STA. Under th

BACKGROUND: Ocular trauma may result in pathology of the ocular surface and adnexa, extraocular muscles, orbital walls, eye and optic nerve. Detailed history followed by a complete ocular and, if indicated, radiological examination is therefore a crucial part of any trauma assessment. It is important to determine whether a patient with ocular trauma can be reassured or requires immediate referral for further investigation and surgical repair.
OBJECTIVE: This review examines chemical eye injuries, orbital fractures, superficial corneal foreign bodies, closed globe injury and suspected open glo

BACKGROUND: Biopsy of the superficial temporal artery (STA) is central to the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis (GCA), but determining the ideal biopsy site along the course of the STA continues to be a challenge. Traditionally, the frontal branch or preauricular region of the STA is biopsied because of their accessibility, but biopsy at these locations can produce visible cosmetic defects and social disruption that can be distressing to patients, as well as increase the likelihood of adverse events such as injury to the facial nerve. The authors describe a surgical technique of biopsy of the

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue injuries are a common consequence of head and neck trauma. With injuries being highly individual and varying depending on the underlying trauma, it is difficult to establish standardized guidelines for head and neck trauma in general. The main goal of this study was to showcase the distribution of soft tissue injury types and the principles pertaining to acute care of the individual clinical presentations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective evaluation was carried out using all trauma-relevant ICD-10 codes for trauma to the head (S00.- to S09.-) and neck (S10.- to S

The radiological image of an intact tectorial membrane (TM) became an important favorable prognostic factor for craniovertebral instability. This study visualized the fascial layers of the TM and adjacent connective tissues with clinical significance by micro-CT and histological analysis. The TM firmly attached to the bony surface of the clivus, traversed the atlantoaxial joint posteriorly, and was inserted to the body of the axis showing wide distribution on the craniovertebral junction. The supradental space between the clivus, dens of the axis, anterior atlantooccipital membrane, and the TM

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea after temporal bone surgery involves drainage from the Eustachian tube (ET) into the nasopharynx, causing significant patient morbidity. Variable anatomy of the ET accounts for failures of currently used ET obliteration techniques.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the surgical anatomy of the ET and examine possible techniques for ET closure through middle fossa (MF) and transmastoid approaches.
METHODS: We described the surgical anatomy of the ET from the MF and transmastoid approaches in 5 adult cadaveric heads, measuring morphometric and surgical anatomy pa

Superficial temporal artery (STA) pseudoaneurysms are rare vascular lesions that typically present after traumatic head injury. Currently, surgery is the recommended treatment as spontaneous resolution has not been previously reported. Our study aims to present a review of the literature on STA pseudoaneurysms and report a case of spontaneous resolution of a traumatic STA pseudoaneurysm without the need for direct intervention.

BACKGROUND: Keloids are chronic dermal fibro-proliferative disorders resulting from excessive collagen deposition. Although it is commonly seen in the dark skin, it occurs in other races. It is a disfiguring dermatosis whose epidemiology and clinical pattern should be put into proper perspective in an area where it has not been extensively documented.
SUBJECTS AND METHOD: A cross-sectional design that included 120 consenting keloids patients was made at the dermatology and plastic surgery clinics of a tertiary hospital over one year. Keloid was diagnosed clinically, risk factors, locations an

INTRODUCTION: Otomycosis is a superficial infection of the external ear caused by fungal pathogens. The genera Aspergillus and Candida are considered the main fungal causative agents, with the predominance of Aspergillus section Nigri. The present study aimed to evaluate the clinical symptoms of patients with otomycosis and predisposing factors and to identify fungal etiological agents using molecular approaches. We also present an overview of published papers on tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) secondary to otomycosis.

Superficial and cutaneous aspergillosis is a rare fungal disease that is restricted to the outer layers of the skin, nails, and the outer auditory canal, infrequently invading the deeper tissue and viscera, particularly in immunocompromised patients. These mycoses are acquired through two main routes: direct traumatic inoculation or inhalation of airborne fungal spores into paranasal sinuses and lungs. Lesions are classified into three categories: otomycosis, onychomycosis, and cutaneous aspergillosis. Superficial and cutaneous aspergillosis occurs less frequently and therefore remains poorly
