Accurate measurement of edema volume is essential for the investigation of tissue response and recovery following a traumatic injury. The measurements must be noninvasive and repetitive over time so as to monitor tissue response throughout the healing process. Such techniques are particularly necessary for the evaluation of therapeutics that are currently in development to suppress or prevent edema formation. In this study, we propose to use optical coherence tomography (OCT) technique to image and quantify edema in a mouse ear model where the injury is induced by a superficial-thickness burn.

BACKGROUND: There are several treatment approaches for mandibular condyle fractures. Type of fracture, clinical experience, and preference of the operating surgeon dictate the approach. Given this highly varied outcome, this manuscript intends to document the treatment experience of 75 patients with extracapsular condyle fractures using author's modification of the traditional endaural approach in the region.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on patients with mandibular condylar fractures who visited the author's center between 2004 and 2014. For the surgical r

Objective: Optical microangiography (OMAG)-based optical coherence tomography is a noninvasive technique capable of imaging functional microvasculature innervating scanned tissue volume. In this study, we utilize OMAG to investigate dynamic changes of microcirculation during the healing process of a burn. Approach: A soft-contact superficial burn injury was induced on a mouse ear with 1 μL 70°C hot water. Microangiograms were generated by using OMAG before and after the burn. Results: Vessel recruitment and remodeling were observed in the healing process. Burn injury reached to the worst exten

Patients with major ear deformities and associated compromise of the superficial temporal artery are poor candidates for autogenous ear reconstruction because of a tenuous ipsilateral temporoparietal fascial flap (TPFF). Osseointegrated prosthetic auricular reconstruction (OPAR) is an alternative to contralateral free TPFF microsurgical and autogenous reconstruction, but data on clinical outcomes are limited. The records of patients with ear loss or major deformity and a compromised ipsilateral TPFF who underwent OPAR from 1989 to 2013 were reviewed. Satisfaction was assessed using a questionn

OBJECTIVE: Lipo-prostaglandin E1 (lipo-PGE1) is a well-known potent vasodilator that increases peripheral blood flow. However, the effects of this agent on wound bed microcirculation still remain unclear. The present study aims to improve the experimental model which our group developed to visualise wound bed microcirculation and to evaluate acute stimulation by lipo-PGE1.
METHOD: The superficial stratum of the Wistar rat's ear skin was microsurgically excised preserving the subdermal vascular plexus. The preserved vessels, the wound bed microcirculation, were visualised under an intravital m

Corneal epithelial basement membrane dystrophies and superficial injuries caused by scratches can lead to recurrent corneal erosion syndrome (RCES). Patients and animals with reduced corneal sensory nerve innervation can also develop recurrent erosions. Multiple wild-type mouse strains will spontaneously develop recurrent corneal erosions after single 1.5 mm debridement wounds. Here we show that this wound is accompanied by an increase in corneal epithelial cell proliferation after wound closure but without a commensurate increase in corneal epithelial thickness. We investigated whether excess

BACKGROUND: Adequate emergency department (ED) anesthesia for painful ear conditions, such as ear lacerations or ear abscesses, can be challenging. Much of the sensory innervation of the ear is supplied from the anterior and posterior branches of the greater auricular nerve (GAN). The GAN is a branch of the superficial cervical plexus, which arises from the C2/C3 spinal roots. The GAN innervation includes most of the helix, antihelix, the lobule, and the skin over the mastoid process and parotid gland. Anesthesia of the GAN is commonly performed in emergency medicine as part of a landmark-base

PURPOSE: A variety of fixation techniques for subpectoral biceps tenodeses have been described including interference screw and suture anchor fixation. Biomechanical data suggests that dual suture anchor fixation has equivalent strength compared to interference screw fixation. The purpose of the study is to determine the early complication rate after subpectoral biceps tenodesis utilizing a dual suture anchor technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 103 open subpectoral biceps tenodeses were performed over a 3-year period using a dual suture anchor technique. There were 72 male and 31 fem

Ear amputation is a devastating injury characterized by a conspicuous deformity that is not easily concealed and can result in tremendous psychological trauma in addition to the physical insult. While numerous different approaches have been proposed, microvascular replantation is widely considered to deliver the best esthetic outcome. In this article, the authors report a case in which an unconventional perfusion pattern (i.e., arterialization of the venous system) was chosen, as intraoperative anatomic conditions precluded conventional vascular reconstruction. A 25-year-old male patient susta

Untreated acquired auricular damage can be a psychological burden, especially for younger patients. The significance of auricular reconstruction in patients with microtia in terms of quality of life has already been demonstrated. In these patients the use of porous polyethylene combined with a temporoparietal fascia flap has proven to be a suitable method for achieving good cosmetic results. Here, we describe how to use porous polyethylene combined with an endoscopically harvested temporoparietal fascia flap and autologous skin grafts for the reconstruction of acquired partial auricle defects

Head and neck melanomas (HNMs) are frequent and have a poorer prognosis than melanomas at other sites. Photoprotection in these locations is difficult. In this population-based study of 279 HNMs diagnosed in a French region between 2004 and 2009, major differences were found between genders. A clearcut, sex-related distribution was found between a "peripheral" area (scalp, forehead, temples, ears, and neck) and a "central" one (other parts of the face), with 56.7% of HNMs being located in the peripheral area in men and 79.3% in the central area in women (P<0.0001). Moreover, HNMs located in th

BACKGROUND: An estimated 116 086 facelifts were performed in 2011. Regardless of the technique employed, facial flap elevation carries with it anatomical pitfalls of which any surgeon performing these procedures should be aware. Injury to the great auricular nerve (GAN) is the most common of these injuries, occurring at a rate of 6% to 7%.
OBJECTIVES: We report our findings on the location of the GAN on the basis of anatomical landmarks to aid surgeons with planning their surgical approach for safe elevation of rhytidectomy skin flaps in the lateral neck region.
METHODS: Sixteen fresh cadave

A 42-year-old man presented with a preauricular subcutaneous pulsating node which had appeared a few weeks after a middle ear operation. CT angiography revealed an aneurysm of the superficial temporal artery. The diagnosis was histologically confirmed after surgical resection of the finding. This is the first description of an aneurysm of the superficial temporal artery as a rare complication of a tympanoplasty. In the presented case, the aneurysm must have been caused either by the surgical trauma of the endaural tympanoplastic incision or the sharp retractors.

PURPOSE: The 27-kDa heat shock protein (HSP27) has been implicated in wound healing in multiple tissues. We investigated the expression and localization of phosphorylated HSP27 during epithelial wound healing in the murine cornea.
METHODS: Corneas of 8- to 10-week-old C57BL6 mice were wounded by epithelial debridement (n = 40). Unwounded corneas served as controls (n = 3). After 3, 7, and 14 days, phosphorylated HSP27 localization in wounded corneas was observed by confocal immunohistochemistry and double immunogold labeling transmission immunoelectron microscopy. We present a case of successful total auricular reconstruction after total amputation of the auricle. Owing to the severe damage to the auricular cartilage, replantation was not attempted; instead, for the next step of the reconstruction, severed superficial temporal artery and vein were anastomosed. At the second stage, total auricular reconstruction was planned. A huge temporoparietal fascial flap was used (based on STA/STV), which was used to cover the costal cartilage ear framework. This case suggests that, even for the total loss of the auricle, autogenous reconstruction can still be succ
