Extracapsular dissection via single cervical incision for parotid pleomorphic adenoma.

OBJECTIVES: Surgical management of parotid pleomorphic adenoma ranges from total parotidectomy to extracapsular dissection (ECD). Minimalistic techniques aim to preserve function and minimize the rate of recurrence. This study assesses functional, aesthetic, and disease control outcomes post-ECD through a sole transverse cervical incision for parotid pleomorphic adenoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This longitudinal analysis enrolled 36 consecutive patients with pleomorphic adenoma who underwent ECD via a single cervical incision. Complications, satisfaction, salivary function, and tumor recurrenc

Univariate and Multivariable Analyses on Independent Predictors for Cervical Spinal Injury in Patients with Head Injury.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify independent factors associated with cervical spinal injuries in head-injured patients. The extent of injuries to other body parts was assessed by the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and was included in the analysis. METHODS: Consecutive head-injured patients admitted via the emergency department from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. The inclusion criteria were head-injured patients with an Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) score ≥2 (i.e., head injuries with intracranial hematoma or skull fracture). Patients with minor head

A 5-year retrospective analysis of necrotizing fasciitis--a single center experiences.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is usually an acute infection of superficial fascia with rapid progression in around soft tissue. If not promptly recognized and aggressively treated NF usualy leads to sepsis and multiorgan failure with fatal outcome, thus early diagnosis and prompt surgical treatment are crucial for healing of these patients. The aim of this article was to evaluate the clinical presentation of all patients with acute NF diagnosed and treated in surgical clinics of Clinical Center of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia. METHODS: The medical records of patients treated for a

Cerebral cyst formation following stereotactic ablative irradiation for non-nasopharyngeal head and neck malignancies: imaging findings and relevant dosimetric parameters.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical characteristics, imaging findings and relevant dosimetric parameters of cases presenting with cerebral cyst formation (CCF) after single or oligo-fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) for non-nasopharyngeal head and neck malignancies (HNMs). METHODS: We identified four cases with the follow-up duration of 5.7-9.1 years from SRT. The irradiated sites included the middle ear in one case and the ethmoid sinus in three cases, two of the latter possessed brain invasion. The chronological changes in MR images and the dose-volume histogram of the adjacent b

Purinergic receptors in ocular inflammation.

Inflammation is a complex process that implies the interaction between cells and molecular mediators, which, when not properly "tuned," can lead to disease. When inflammation affects the eye, it can produce severe disorders affecting the superficial and internal parts of the visual organ. The nucleoside adenosine and nucleotides including adenine mononucleotides like ADP and ATP and dinucleotides such as P(1),P(4)-diadenosine tetraphosphate (Ap4A), and P(1),P(5)-diadenosine pentaphosphate (Ap5A) are present in different ocular locations and therefore they may contribute/modulate inflammatory p

Sex-related location of head and neck melanoma strongly argues for a major role of sun exposure in cars and photoprotection by hair.

Head and neck melanomas (HNMs) are frequent and have a poorer prognosis than melanomas at other sites. Photoprotection in these locations is difficult. In this population-based study of 279 HNMs diagnosed in a French region between 2004 and 2009, major differences were found between genders. A clearcut, sex-related distribution was found between a "peripheral" area (scalp, forehead, temples, ears, and neck) and a "central" one (other parts of the face), with 56.7% of HNMs being located in the peripheral area in men and 79.3% in the central area in women (P<0.0001). Moreover, HNMs located in th

[Intraoral lipoma in the region of the mental nerve--report of a case and review of the literature].

The intraoral lipoma is a benign, slowly growing, painless soft tissue neoplasia, which can cause esthetic or functional problems for the patient, depending on its size. All parts of the body can be affected, whereas the oral cavity is rarely involved. Clinically, the tumour often exhibits an exophytic growth pattern, a soft consistency, a broad base connected to the underlying tissue, and frequently has a reddish-yellowish colour. Instead of a superficial mucosal involvement, a deep localization in the soft tissues is also possible. Depending on the localization of the tumour, the diagnosis a

Arterial injuries of the lower extremity from blunt trauma.

Thirty patients with 33 arterial injuries from blunt trauma of the lower extremity at Chulalongkorn Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand from January 1989 to December 1995 were reviewed. Eight patients (26.6%) were in shock on arrival. Twenty four (80%) presented with signs of ischemia. Twenty six (86.7%) had associated fractures and/or dislocations, 14 of them were compound fractures. Nine (30%) had associated injuries at other parts of the body. Ten (33.3%) underwent preoperative angiography. The preoperative time ranged from 1 to 72 hours, median 4 hours. One patient who had intimal tear of the popl

Extinction and synesthesia in patients with spinal cord injuries.

Extinction and synesthesia were studied in 50 patients with spinal cord injury with various levels and extents. Extinction was found in 20 (40 per cent) and synesthesia in 6 (12 per cent) of the 40 males and 10 females. No correlations were found between either of the two phenomena and parameters of patient's age, lesion's age, lesion's level and extent, or accompanying head injury. The latter occurred in 22/50 patients (44 per cent), diagnosed by a history of amnesia. Extinction was tested by synchronous double stimulation unilaterally and bilaterally, symmetrically and asymmetrically. It was
