Familial Aplasia Cutis Congenita With Exposure of the Meningeal Membrane: A Case Report.

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a rare congenital malformation characterized by the localized absence of skin and occasionally subcutaneous and bone tissues. Its etiology is multifactorial, and management ranges from conservative wound care to surgical intervention. We report the case of a male newborn presenting with a 4-5 cm ulcerated lesion at the vertex of the scalp, with complete absence of bone tissue and dural exposure. Physical examination revealed syndromic features (facial asymmetry, hypertelorism, low-set ears, and cutaneous syndactyly) and an atrial septal defect. A strong autosom

Scalp-ear-nipple syndrome: a clinical and pathogenetic review using novel artificial intelligence methodology.

Scalp-ear-nipple (SEN) syndrome (OMIM #181270) is a rare autosomal dominant ectodermal dysplasia characterized by aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) of the scalp, overfolded ear helices and breast aplasia. Since the identification of heterozygous KCTD1 pathogenic variants as the molecular cause in 2013, our understanding of this condition has undergone substantial revision. KCTD1 encodes a 257-amino-acid BTB domain-containing protein that forms pentameric complexes and functions as a transcriptional repressor of transcription factor AP-2α. All currently reported SEN-causing variants cluster within

Detailed Analysis of Intraretinal Layers and Their Correlation to Brain Structures in Normal Healthy Aging.

IMPORTANCE: Patients with head and neck cancer who undergo radiotherapy can develop chronic radiation-induced xerostomia. Prior acupuncture studies were single center and rated as having high risk of bias, making it difficult to know the benefits of acupuncture for treating radiation-induced xerostomia. OBJECTIVE: To compare true acupuncture (TA), sham acupuncture (SA), and standard oral hygiene (SOH) for treating radiation-induced xerostomia. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A randomized, blinded, 3-arm, placebo-controlled trial was conducted between July 29, 2013, and June 9, 2021. Data

A spatial healing metric for wound healing modeling.

We propose a new healing metric for improved tracking of the wound healing process across arbitrary wound geometries. A Fickian diffusion equation with a logistic nonlinear term is solved using the open-source finite element framework FEniCSx. The model is verified and calibrated by comparing finite element simulation results with experimental data from the literature, focused on the circular rabbit ear wound. To address the limitations of fixed-threshold metrics, we introduce a spatial healing metric, β , which captures the average cell density across the wound domain. This metric reflects he

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Chronic Venous Leg Ulcers: A Prospective Randomised Controlled Trial.

Chronic venous leg ulcers (CVLUs) affect 1%-3% of adults. Standard compression therapy achieves healing in only 40%-70% of cases at 24 weeks. Evidence for hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy remains controversial, with limited sham-controlled trials. To evaluate whether adjunctive HBO improves healing of refractory CVLUs compared to standard care alone. Single-centre, open-label randomised trial of 80 adults with CVLUs that persisted > 3 months despite standard care (defined as < 30% area reduction after 4 weeks of compression therapy). All consecutive eligible patients were randomised to HBO (20

Exploring Exosomes for Pediatric Ischemic Auricular Flap Repair.

Avulsions of the upper third of the ear often present with skin flaps of compromised vascularity. Although initially viable, these flaps may later develop ischemic changes ranging from epidermolysis to full-thickness necrosis, delaying healing. Angiogenesis, primarily mediated by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), is essential for tissue repair. In children, VEGF promotes endothelial cell migration and proliferation, accelerating wound healing. Currently, VEFG is the primary target of therapeutic angiogenesis approaches, and microRNAs have emerged as key angiogenic regulators. Exosomes

Risk factors for post-traumatic osteoarthritis following surgical treatment of acetabular posterior wall fractures: a retrospective study.

Posterior wall fractures, commonly caused by high-energy mechanisms like motor vehicle collisions or falls, are frequently associated with hip dislocation and complex intra-articular injuries. Despite surgical advances, post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) remains a prevalent complication, often leading to significant functional impairment and eventual joint replacement. Identifying potentially modifiable risk factors may help improve long-term outcomes. This study aimed to identify independent risk factors associated with the development of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) following surgi

Data from a UK-based multicentre randomised feasibility study investigating the management of post-traumatic benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: mixed-methods analyses.

OBJECTIVES: Traumatic brain injury commonly causes dizziness and balance problems. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most frequent cause of inner-ear related post-traumatic vestibular dysfunction. However, optimal assessment and treatment practices are poorly evidenced. Using a mixed methods approach, we aimed to explore the feasibility of managing post-traumatic BPPV. DESIGN: A mixed-methods randomised feasibility study. In this paper, quantitative and qualitative data relating to key feasibility targets around recruitment, randomisation and assessment and treatment were sel

Isolated screw fixation of posterior wall fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior wall (PW) fractures are common acetabular fractures and are most often treated by open reduction and internal fixation. The gold-standard of surgical stabilization is screw fixation of large wall fragments with additional buttress plating. Some reports focussed on screw fixation alone presenting adequate results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From a total of 208 PW-fracture treated between 1972 and 2008, 57 patients were identified with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) using isolated screw fixation. These patients were analyzed regarding demographical data (patient

Contralateral sensate free anterior auricular flap with a crus helix cartilage for burn auricular deformity: A Case report.

The characteristic intricate 3- dimensional shaped thin cartilage, covered by thin skin, make the external ear prone to cartilage exposure and significant deformation after injury. Auricular reconstruction after such injuries often involves the use of local flaps with or without cartilage grafts. However, this is challenging when surrounding skin scarring limits the use of local flaps. We report a case of auricular reconstruction using a contralateral free anterior auricular flap with vascularized helical cartilage for reconstruction of a post-burn defect of the ear helix.
