Isolated Congenital Absence of Right Lower Lateral Cartilage and Reconstruction with Septal Cartilage: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Congenital anomalies of the nose are rare but may be associated with syndromes affecting craniofacial structures. Herein, we report a case of a congenital absence of lower lateral cartilage seen during an open rhinoplasty in a 23-yr-old lady with no underlying health conditions. Medical and surgical history were unremarkable and there were no evidences conducted of any previous traumatic facial injuries. During physical examination, a significant nostril asymmetry was noted to be present. In addition, cotton test showed no evidence of obstruction. The absence of lower lateral cartilage on the

A novel technique in septal perforation: Fascia lata and costal cartilage sandwich graft.

BACKGROUND: Nasal septum perforation (NSP) is an anatomical defect of the mucosa, cartilage/bone of nasal septum and septoplasty is the most common cause of it. A perforated septum rarely heals on its own, it is more likely to get worse. The success for large perforations is approximately 78%, it is harder to be successful in vertically larger perforations. We introduce a new technique to close large perforations by the fascia lata and costal cartilage sandwich graft (FLSG). The main advantage of this technique is that the fascia lata eliminates the opening between the septal mucosal flaps in

Why Primary Rhinoplasty Fails.

Rhinoplasty remains one of the most challenging operations performed by plastic surgeons. The complexity lies in the ability to have a consistent and predictable aesthetic result. The unpredictability is mainly attributable to the interplay of manipulated internal structures and wound healing dynamics. In addition, setting realistic expectations with the patient is essential for achieving high postoperative patient satisfaction. An open rhinoplasty approach enables an accurate and in-depth evaluation and intervention. The authors provide a detailed analysis and discussion on why primary rhinop

Comparison of Dental Injury Rates in Perioperative Intubation and Suspension Laryngoscopy for Otolaryngology Procedures.

OBJECTIVE: Direct laryngoscopy is an essential skill during perioperative intubation and otolaryngology procedures. Dental injury is a common complication of direct laryngoscopy. However, the technique and tools used by anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, and others during perioperative intubation and by ear, nose, and throat surgeons for their procedures are different. The purpose of this review is to explore the literature for all studies detailing rates of dental injury in each of these settings and to compare them to see if the approaches have a significant difference in rate of dental

Multiple Approaches for Managing Complex Ophthalmic Blunt Trauma: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Ophthalmic trauma is defined as injuries affecting the ocular structures, including the globe, eyelid, lacrimal system, and surrounding orbital walls. Blunt trauma acts as the leading cause of injury and it may affect both the anterior and posterior parts of the globe. Prompt diagnosis, early management, and sustained follow-up are mandatory for an optimal outcome. PURPOSE: This report presents a one-step surgery management process for an intricate case of blunt facial trauma with complex ophthalmic and nasal injury. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 45-year-old male with blunt force tra

Destructive Frontonasal Mucocele Following Facial Trauma and Surgery.

Mucoceles are fluid filled cysts with numerous etiologies that can erode bone and if left untreated, can lead to infraorbital and intracranial complications. With limited cases published in the medical literature, our patient with a frontonasal mucocele expanding from the frontal sinus to the nasal dorsum with erosion of the nasal bones and upper lateral cartilages, provides an opportunity for evidence-based diagnosis and treatment. We present a 24-year-old female with a nasal mass destroying numerous nasal structures. Three surgical approaches were considered: open rhinoplasty, bicoronal appr

Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy (4th edition)1.

In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to se

Frontal sinus fractures and cerebrospinal fluid leaks: a change in surgical paradigm.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Traditionally, frontal sinus trauma has been treated using open incisions to access the anterior and/or posterior table. Mounting evidence indicates frontal sinus trauma can be managed using an endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) with less morbidity. Such an approach permits preservation of a functional sinus and less reliance on computed tomography for postoperative follow up. The goal of this article is to highlight a shift in paradigm away from open approaches using external incisions towards an EEA to repair cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks and fractures of the frontal si

Sampling of Patient Radiation Therapy Thermoplastic Immobilization Forms Reveals Several Types of Attached Bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Thermoplastic medical devices used during patient therapy have been shown to harbor microbes, including those causing healthcare-associated infections (HAI). This issue has not been previously evaluated for immobilization forms used during radiation therapy. The present study addresses this matter by sampling immobilization forms used during patient treatment to see if any microbes could be similarly recovered. METHODS: Twelve head-only in-use patient forms were sampled at 3 radiation therapy facilities. Sampled form areas included cheeks, forehead, and nose. A site survey was als

Infraorbital Foramen Decompression Surgery for the Infraorbital Nerve Hypoesthesia in Patients With Isolated Fracture of Maxillary Sinus Anterior Wall.

Isolated fracture of maxillary sinus anterior wall is relatively uncommon. If the extent of fracture is minimal, only conservative care is amenable, however, there is no agreement on whether infraorbital nerve dysfunction can be used as an indication for surgical intervention. This study was conducted to verify the effect of decompression surgery of infraorbital foramen for recovery of hypoesthesia. A total of 26 patients with unilateral fracture of maxillary sinus anterior wall were enrolled. Ten who received only conservative therapy were allocated in the control group, while sixteen patient

Immediate or Delayed Transplantation of a Vein Conduit Filled with Nasal Olfactory Stem Cells Improves Locomotion and Axogenesis in Rats after a Peroneal Nerve Loss of Substance.

Over the recent years, several methods have been experienced to repair injured peripheral nerves. Among investigated strategies, the use of natural or synthetic conduits was validated for clinical application. In this study, we assessed the therapeutic potential of vein guides, transplanted immediately or two weeks after a peroneal nerve injury and filled with olfactory ecto-mesenchymal stem cells (OEMSC). Rats were randomly allocated to five groups. A3 mm peroneal nerve loss was bridged, acutely or chronically, with a 1 cm long femoral vein and with/without OEMSCs. These four groups were comp
