Familial Aplasia Cutis Congenita With Exposure of the Meningeal Membrane: A Case Report.

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a rare congenital malformation characterized by the localized absence of skin and occasionally subcutaneous and bone tissues. Its etiology is multifactorial, and management ranges from conservative wound care to surgical intervention. We report the case of a male newborn presenting with a 4-5 cm ulcerated lesion at the vertex of the scalp, with complete absence of bone tissue and dural exposure. Physical examination revealed syndromic features (facial asymmetry, hypertelorism, low-set ears, and cutaneous syndactyly) and an atrial septal defect. A strong autosom

Scalp-ear-nipple syndrome: a clinical and pathogenetic review using novel artificial intelligence methodology.

Scalp-ear-nipple (SEN) syndrome (OMIM #181270) is a rare autosomal dominant ectodermal dysplasia characterized by aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) of the scalp, overfolded ear helices and breast aplasia. Since the identification of heterozygous KCTD1 pathogenic variants as the molecular cause in 2013, our understanding of this condition has undergone substantial revision. KCTD1 encodes a 257-amino-acid BTB domain-containing protein that forms pentameric complexes and functions as a transcriptional repressor of transcription factor AP-2α. All currently reported SEN-causing variants cluster within

A spatial healing metric for wound healing modeling.

We propose a new healing metric for improved tracking of the wound healing process across arbitrary wound geometries. A Fickian diffusion equation with a logistic nonlinear term is solved using the open-source finite element framework FEniCSx. The model is verified and calibrated by comparing finite element simulation results with experimental data from the literature, focused on the circular rabbit ear wound. To address the limitations of fixed-threshold metrics, we introduce a spatial healing metric, β , which captures the average cell density across the wound domain. This metric reflects he

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Chronic Venous Leg Ulcers: A Prospective Randomised Controlled Trial.

Chronic venous leg ulcers (CVLUs) affect 1%-3% of adults. Standard compression therapy achieves healing in only 40%-70% of cases at 24 weeks. Evidence for hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy remains controversial, with limited sham-controlled trials. To evaluate whether adjunctive HBO improves healing of refractory CVLUs compared to standard care alone. Single-centre, open-label randomised trial of 80 adults with CVLUs that persisted > 3 months despite standard care (defined as < 30% area reduction after 4 weeks of compression therapy). All consecutive eligible patients were randomised to HBO (20

Exploring Exosomes for Pediatric Ischemic Auricular Flap Repair.

Avulsions of the upper third of the ear often present with skin flaps of compromised vascularity. Although initially viable, these flaps may later develop ischemic changes ranging from epidermolysis to full-thickness necrosis, delaying healing. Angiogenesis, primarily mediated by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), is essential for tissue repair. In children, VEGF promotes endothelial cell migration and proliferation, accelerating wound healing. Currently, VEFG is the primary target of therapeutic angiogenesis approaches, and microRNAs have emerged as key angiogenic regulators. Exosomes

An Open-Label Split-Body Clinical Trial Evaluating Therapeutic Efficacy and Safety of Cold Atmospheric Plasma in Canine Acute Otitis Externa.

BACKGROUND: Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) offers a novel, nonpharmacological approach with potent antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties without harming healthy tissue. In vitro studies have demonstrated its antimicrobial efficacy against key pathogens implicated in canine otitis externa (OE), a condition prone to chronicity if poorly managed. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated CAP's therapeutic efficacy and safety in treating canine acute OE. ANIMALS: Twenty-two dogs with bilateral acute OE. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dogs were divided into two equal groups with different

Data from a UK-based multicentre randomised feasibility study investigating the management of post-traumatic benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: mixed-methods analyses.

OBJECTIVES: Traumatic brain injury commonly causes dizziness and balance problems. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most frequent cause of inner-ear related post-traumatic vestibular dysfunction. However, optimal assessment and treatment practices are poorly evidenced. Using a mixed methods approach, we aimed to explore the feasibility of managing post-traumatic BPPV. DESIGN: A mixed-methods randomised feasibility study. In this paper, quantitative and qualitative data relating to key feasibility targets around recruitment, randomisation and assessment and treatment were sel

Plant Exosome Injection with or without Low Level Laser Therapy Promotes Skin Wound Healing: An Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Plant derived extracellular vesicle preparations and low level laser therapy (LLLT) each show regenerative effects in cutaneous wound healing. Their combined application may enhance early dermal repair following laser-induced skin injury. This study compares 3 commercially available plant derived extracellular vesicle formulations; Exoline, Glow, and Elysee, administered alone or with LLLT, in a rabbit ear wound model. Characterization of these preparations, including particle content and composition, was limited, and dosing was volume based. METHODS: Two hundred forty adult male

Contralateral sensate free anterior auricular flap with a crus helix cartilage for burn auricular deformity: A Case report.

The characteristic intricate 3- dimensional shaped thin cartilage, covered by thin skin, make the external ear prone to cartilage exposure and significant deformation after injury. Auricular reconstruction after such injuries often involves the use of local flaps with or without cartilage grafts. However, this is challenging when surrounding skin scarring limits the use of local flaps. We report a case of auricular reconstruction using a contralateral free anterior auricular flap with vascularized helical cartilage for reconstruction of a post-burn defect of the ear helix. Post operative outco

First Free Anterolateral Thigh Flap for Facial Reconstruction Following Bear Mauling in Bhutan.

Approximately 70% of Bhutan is forested, providing habitat for the Himalayan black bear. A farmer who was mauled by a bear experienced significant tissue loss affecting his left forehead, eyebrow, upper and lower eyelids, and cheek. Immediate management included wound irrigation, antibiotic prophylaxis, and soft-tissue reconstruction using an anterolateral thigh fasciocutaneous flap for coverage. Flap reconstruction facilitated ocular salvage, with retention of excellent visual acuity and a cosmetically acceptable, functional facial outcome. The flap also provided protection and function of th

Efficacy and Cosmetics of Secondary Intention Healing for Facial Skin Cancer: A Single-Center Retrospective Study.

Reconstruction after facial skin cancer excision requires balancing oncologic safety with cosmetic outcomes. Secondary intention healing (SIH) is a simple and cost-effective wound management approach that avoids complex reconstruction and permits close oncologic surveillance; however, it remains underutilized because of concerns regarding prolonged healing and unpredictable cosmetic results. Moreover, whether evidence derived primarily from Western populations can be extrapolated to Asian patients remains unclear. In this retrospective study, we reviewed 129 Japanese patients who underwent fac

The "No Man's Land" of Nasal Subunits: A Case Series and Algorithm for Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: The area in the lower third of the nose between the tip and the ala is a small concavity between 2 convex subunits. It lies adjacent to the soft triangle and the nasal sidewall. The senior author termed this region the "no man's land" of nasal reconstruction, as it does not fall within any of the subunits. This region, at the junction of 4 nasal subunits, has not been widely discussed, despite being one of the most challenging areas to achieve optimal aesthetic outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records was conducted for patients who underwent nasal reconstructio
