Operative Versus Nonoperative Outcomes: A Cohort Study on Distal Biceps Tendon Rupture.

Background Distal biceps tendon ruptures typically occur in middle-aged men following eccentric loading activities. While surgical repair is common, comparative data on operative versus nonoperative outcomes remain limited. We conducted a retrospective study to compare the outcomes of operative versus nonoperative management in Queen's Hospital Burton. Methods We reviewed the records of 72 patients (52 operative, 20 nonoperative) treated during the period of 2016-2023 for complete distal biceps tendon ruptures. All diagnoses were confirmed clinically and radiologically. Operative management wa

Video Clinics for Nasal Bone Injuries in COVID Times - Is it a Valid Tool for Routine Practice?

Introduction  We previously investigated the impact of video clinics on the management of closed nasal bone injuries during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The aim of that study was to assess the feasibility of managing patients at their homes or workplaces, with instructions to attend outpatient clinics the next working day if they suspected any deviation or reduced nasal airflow, for further evaluation. Objective  To compare the results of our previous research with the traditional, in-person nasal injury clinics, using the same criteria as in our prior investigation. Metho

Lycium barbarum Glycopeptide Alleviates Neomycin-Induced Ototoxicity by Inhibiting Tryptophan Hydroxylase-Mediated Serotonin Biosynthesis.

Aminoglycoside antibiotic-induced sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a common sensory disorder that requires the development of prophylactic and therapeutic interventions. Lycium barbarum glycopeptide (LBGP) is a peptidoglycan isolated and purified from Lycium barbarum polysaccharides that exhibit significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective effects, but the role of LBGP in aminoglycoside-induced SNHL has not been well investigated. Here it is shown that LBGP can protect against neomycin-induced hearing impairment and alleviate oxidative stress in a neomycin-induced SNHL m

Evaluating the Safety of Rhinoplasty in Smokers.

BACKGROUND: Smoking's impact on tissue perfusion and wound healing is particularly relevant in rhinoplasty, where precise tissue healing is crucial for functional and aesthetic outcomes. Although the nasal region's robust vascular supply mitigates smoking's detrimental effects, concerns remain about postoperative complications. This study investigates whether smoking should be contraindicated for rhinoplasty by comparing infection and revision rates between smokers and nonsmokers. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 1884 rhinoplasty cases from 2014 to 2022. Patients were categori

Cell-free adipose extract inhibits hypertrophic scar formation through collagen remodeling and antiangiogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: Hypertrophic scars (HS) are a fibrotic proliferative disorder that results from an abnormal wound healing process, presenting significant challenges for clinical intervention. The primary characteristics of HS include excessive collagen deposition and angiogenesis. In recent years, the study of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their derived exosomes has emerged as a prominent area of research within the academic community. However, the therapeutic application of MSCs is impeded by several challenges, including immune rejection, sourcing limitations, ethical dilemmas, and difficulti

Monocyte-derived macrophage recruitment mediated by TRPV1 is required for eardrum wound healing.

The tympanic membrane (TM), or eardrum, is a thin, sensitive tissue critical for hearing by vibrating and transmitting sound waves to the inner ear. TM perforation and development of otitis media and conductive hearing loss are commonly seen in the clinic. In this study, we demonstrate the role of TRPV1 signaling mediated macrophage recruitment and angiogenesis in TM repair. By creating a wounded TM mouse model with a perforation in the anteroinferior region of the pars tensa - a region in humans often damaged in traumatic injury, we observed a massive accumulation of macrophages in the vicini

Ear Keloid as an Unusual Complication of Prolonged Mask Use during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic required many people to wear ear-loop face masks (ELFMs) for protracted periods, and ear injuries have been reported. Here, we report a rare case of a keloid on the right posterior ear that appeared to arise from prolonged ELFM use. A 76-year-old Japanese man presented with a 7.3 × 2.2 × 1.4-cm keloid running from the medial retroauricular sulcus to the posterior lobule. The lack of keloid history suggested the absence of genetic risk factors. The patient reported extensive mask-wearing habits that were augmented by the pandemic. The keloid developed from an ear in
