Background and Objectives: Posterior fracture dislocations are rare. There is currently no uniformity regarding treatment. Therefore, outcomes are difficult to compare. We evaluated clinical and radiological outcomes of patients with humeral head posterior fracture dislocation treated with an open posterior reduction and then fixed with a biomechanically validated configuration of blocked threaded wires. Materials and Methods: 11 consecutive patients with humeral head three-part posterior fracture dislocation were treated by reduction through a posterior approach and fixed with blocked threade

BACKGROUND: Proximal humeral fractures (PHFs) often occur in elderly individuals who experience low-energy falls. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of the proximal humerus is typically performed in young, active patients because of their good bone quality and high functional demands. Although good short-term results have been reported after ORIF in young patients, few studies have specifically evaluated long-term outcomes.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What are the long-term clinical outcomes scores and (2) radiologic outcomes of nonosteoporotic three-part and four-part PHFs treated with

OBJECTIVE: Open reduction of congenital hip dislocations currently remains the standard treatment for those hip joints which are irreducible by closed means. The open reduction of the dislocated hip joint represents a relatively invasive surgical method. Thus, the goal was to develop a minimally invasive and safe procedure with a lower complication rate as an alternative to open reduction. This work presents the arthroscopically guided reduction of dislocated hip joints, first described in 2009, as a standardized surgical technique.
INDICATIONS: Failed closed reduction for congenital hip disl

A 39-year-old male presented with multiple gunshot wounds and resultant left comminuted femoral head and neck fractures with retained intraarticular bullet fragments. Successful staged reconstruction was performed with initial placement of an antibiotic spacer and subsequent conversion to total hip arthroplasty. Staged reconstruction with an antibiotic spacer and conversion to total hip arthroplasty is a viable treatment approach for a gunshot wound resulting in intraarticular bullet fragments and comminuted femoral head and neck fractures not amenable to open reduction and internal fixation t

OBJECTIVES: Patients with epilepsy have a high risk of accidents and injuries, resulting in minimized physical activity and social withdrawal. Therefore, we surveyed the prevalence and the types of injuries that patients with epilepsy may endure, and the factors that may increase the risk of injuries.
METHODS: In this cohort study, adult and pediatric patients diagnosed with epilepsy (age ≥ 7 years) and a close family member (parents/guardian) attending the outpatient epilepsy clinics at King Fahd Medical City (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) were interviewed by neurologists. They reviewed the patients

INTRODUCTION: Concussion/mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) often presents initially with disabling symptoms that resolve, but for an unfortunate minority some of these symptoms may become prolonged. Although research into diagnosis and interventions for concussion is increasing, study quality overall remains low. A living systematic review that is updated as evidence becomes available is the ideal research activity to inform a living guideline targeting clinicians and patients. The purpose of this paper is to present the protocol of an ongoing living systematic review for the management of ad

OBJECTIVES: Open fractures are at risk of infection because of exposure of bone and tissue to the environment. Facial fractures are often accompanied by other severe injuries, and therefore fracture management may be delayed until after stabilization. Previous studies in this area have examined timing of multiple facets of care but have tended to report on each in isolation (eg, antibiotic initiation).
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of adult patients admitted to five trauma centers from January 1, 2017 to March 31, 2021 with open facial fractures. Variables collected included demogra

INTRODUCTION: Paediatric pelvic fractures (PPFs) are uncommon but signify serious trauma. A comprehensive multidisciplinary approach is needed due to a high number of associated injuries. This study aims to retrospectively analyse PPFs over a 5-year period and evaluate how advancing skeletal maturity changes fracture patterns and management plans.
METHODS: The trauma database was retrospectively reviewed for pelvic fractures in patients aged ≤ 18 years. Radiographs and CT scans were used to classify pelvic injuries according to the modified Torode classification and determine the status of th

BACKGROUND Arthrogryposis is a congenital condition of multiple contractures of joints associated with hip dislocation. The outcome of open reduction of hip dislocation in arthrogryposis patients is debatable. Open reduction of arthrogryposis is challenging for shallow acetabulum and extensive adhesions and fibrosis. For this reason, a careful extensive release must be carried out to achieve the open reduction of the hip in arthrogryposis patients. The literature lacks surgical recommendations for open reduction of the hip in arthrogryposis patients and how to deal with cases of the extruded b

Radiation-induced oral mucositis is the most common complication for patients who receive head/neck radiotherapy. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is vital for DNA damage repair under ionizing radiation, through functioning as either the substrate for protein poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation at DNA break sites or the cofactor for multiple DNA repair-related enzymes, which therefore can result in a significant consumption of cellular NAD+ during DNA repair. Mammalian cells produce NAD+ mainly by recycling nicotinamide via the salvage pathway, in which the rate-limiting step is governed by nicotin

INTRODUCTION: Proximal humerus fractures are common injuries of the upper extremity. These fractures are frequent in the elderly population due to low-energy trauma and in the younger patient secondary to high-energy trauma that is associated with shoulder dislocations. Proximal humerus fractures are frequently classified according to the Neer classification which is defined by the number of segments and the amount displacement required to define the fracture as displaced. Segments include the greater tuberosity (GT), the lesser tuberosity, the humeral head, and the humeral shaft. Fractures ar

BACKGROUND: The phrase "floating knee is a flail knee joint," referring to ipsilateral femoral and tibial fractures, was first used by Blake and McBryde in 1975. This condition is often caused by a high-energy trauma with often extensive injury to the soft tissues, and is accompanied by life-threatening systemic complications, including head, chest or abdominal injuries and a high incidence of fat embolism. Floating knee is a severe and uncommon injury pattern.
CASE SUMMARY: A 27-year-old man sustained multiple injuries when the electric motorcycle he was riding was hit by a van. His injuries

Highly reproducible animal models of traumatic brain injury (TBI), with well-defined pathologies, are needed for testing therapeutic interventions and understanding the mechanisms of how a TBI alters brain function. The availability of multiple animal models of TBI is necessary to model the different aspects and severities of TBI seen in people. This manuscript describes the use of a midline closed head injury (CHI) to develop a mouse model of mild TBI. The model is considered mild because it does not produce structural brain lesions based on neuroimaging or gross neuronal loss. However, a sin

INTRODUCTION: Fibrin stabilizing factor (FXIII) plays a crucial role in blood clotting, tissue repair, and immune defense. FXIII deficiency after trauma can lead to prolonged wound healing due to persistent infections or coagulation disorders. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of acquired FXIII deficiency after trauma and to provide a description of the time-course changes of important coagulation parameters in relation to FXIII activity. In this context, patient characteristics, laboratory data, and treatment modalities were examined with respect to their influence on FXIII

BACKGROUND: Concussion is a common injury among children and adolescents, with a growing body of literature supporting a variety of diagnostic and treatment modalities. Recovery is variable and depends on multiple factors that can be evaluated through a clinic visit: a thorough history, physical examination, and use of the Post-concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS).
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors associated with overall recovery from concussion in children and adolescents in the clinical setting. It was hypothesized that the presence of 1 of a number of pre- o
