Unusual Projectile in Craniocerebral Trauma: A Medico-Legal Challenge in the Context of Riot-Control Interventions.

We report the case of a 15-year-old male who died instantly after being struck in the right occipitoparietal region by an unconventional projectile-a "crystal ball"-during a public protest in Medellín, Colombia. The projectile was fired from a 37 or 40 mm launcher modified with non-regulation ammunition. Autopsy findings, performed under the Minnesota Protocol, included cranial fracture, brain laceration, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. Although designed to be nonlethal, the improvised use of this kinetic ammunition converted it into a lethal weapon. This case highlights critical gaps in forensic

Multi-dimensional plasma proteomic profiling elucidates molecular mechanisms and pathophysiological networks in pediatric severe traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) is a leading cause of trauma-related mortality and morbidity in pediatric populations. The heterogeneous progression of sTBI presents significant challenges for prognosis and pathophysiological investigation, necessitating advances beyond traditional approaches. This study utilized plasma proteomic profiling to identify sTBI-specific protein alterations and functional pathways correlating with clinical variables in pediatric patients. METHODS: We performed plasma proteomic analysis on 20 matched pairs of pediatric sTBI patients and healthy cont

Cranial Computed Tomography Use in Pediatric Head Trauma: Assessing Appropriateness, Insights, and Recommendations in a Single-Centre Cohort.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Acute head trauma (AHT) is a common reason for pediatric emergency department (ED) visits, although most cases do not result in clinically important traumatic brain injury (ciTBI). Clinical decision rules such as PECARN can help identify children at risk for ciTBI and guide the need for cranial computed tomography (CT). Despite this, CT appears frequently overused, raising ongoing concerns about radiation exposure, resource utilization, and clinical yield. This study evaluated after-hours CT utilization patterns and diagnostic yield for pediatric head trauma at a tertiar

[Facial scarless surgical approach for mandibular condyle fracture].

The selection of surgical approaches for mandibular condylar fractures faces dual challenges of anatomical complexity and the risk of complications. This article reviews conventional approaches and proposes a classification system centered on anatomical pathways. In light of the growing emphasis on aesthetic demands and advances in minimally invasive techniques, the evolution and implementation of the "facial scarless" concept are discussed. Particular attention is given to the endoscopic intraoral and retroauricular transmeatal approaches, with analysis of their clinical applications, advanta

A Rare Case of C5-C6 Bilateral Facetal Dislocation with Central Cord Syndrome Managed by Staged Stabilization.

INTRODUCTION: Subaxial cervical spine injuries are common following high-energy trauma; however, bilateral facet dislocation at C5-C6 associated with central cord syndrome (CCS) is rare. Such injuries demand early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention to optimize neurological recovery. CASE REPORT: A 63-year-old male presented with neck pain and quadriparesis following a fall from a height of 6 feet under the influence of alcohol. Neurological examination revealed upper limb weakness more severe than lower limbs, consistent with CCS.Imaging showed C5-C6 fracture dislocation with bilatera

A Rare Case of a Depressed Inner Table Fracture Without an Outer Table Fracture Following Trauma in a 20-Year-Old Male Patient.

Depressed skull fracture (DSF) refers to an inward distortion of the cranium, usually involving both the outer and inner tables, typically arising from blunt head trauma. These fractures can disrupt the meninges and underlying brain parenchyma. In this case report, we describe an unusual case of a 20-year-old male patient with a depressed skull fracture of the inner table with an entirely intact outer table, with no evidence of epidural, subdural, intraparenchymal hemorrhage, or contusion. The dura mater appeared intact, with no evidence of pneumocephalus or cerebrospinal fluid leakage. Three-

Development and validation of simplified head and thorax finite element models for ballistic impact assessment of non-lethal projectiles.

Despite their classification as "non-lethal," Kinetic Energy Non-Lethal Projectiles (KENLPs) still causing fatal injuries, necessitating rigorous biomechanical assessment. Ethical and technical limits of Post Mortem Human Subjects (PMHS) and experimental testing have elevated Finite Element Human Body Models (HBMs) for blunt trauma research. This study develops a two-stage numerical framework for cranial and thoracic injury prediction using LS-DYNA. Firstly, Hybrid III (H3) sub-models are validated against the Ballistics Load Sensing Headform (BLSH) envelope and NATO STANREC 4744 (AEP-99) thor

Demographic and causal patterns in child cyclist head Injuries: Informing helmet test methods.

Children's cycle helmets are certified using the same impact conditions as adult helmets, which can overlook important factors contributing to child head injuries. Our objective is to identify common patterns in traumatic brain injury pathologies, age, sex, riding environment, cause of injury, helmet use, and helmet injury reduction in child cyclists to inform child-specific test methods. We reviewed 48,074 head injury cases in cyclists under 17 years across 24 studies. An aggregate data meta-analysis was conducted to identify recurring patterns overall and in studies with a high proportion of

Multidisciplinary Management of Dentoalveolar Trauma of an Immature Permanent Maxillary Central Incisor.

Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) can significantly compromise oral health-related quality of life. In younger patients, luxation injuries are associated with a higher risk of pulp necrosis. This case report describes the multidisciplinary management of a 9-year-old patient who presented with a rotated and fractured permanent maxillary right central incisor exhibiting pulp necrosis after dental trauma. An initial attempt at regenerative endodontic treatment was unsuccessful, requiring apexification. Orthodontic treatment was performed to achieve maxillary expansion and rotational alignment of t

Comparative medico-legal analysis of falls from height injuries in adults and children: Patterns and predictors of mortality.

Falls from height (FFH) lead to significant morbidity and mortality in many countries. This study analyzed the characteristics of FFH and identified predictors of mortality. The study prospectively examined 67 patients: pediatric (56.7%) and adult (43.3%) patients following FFH. Childhood falls were entirely accidental and primarily occurred at home, mainly from balconies (55.3%) and rooftops (34.2%). In adults, FFH occurred mainly in occupational (58.6%) and accidental (24.1%) circumstances. Suicidal FFH was reported in only five cases, constituting 17.2% of adult FFH. In adults, falls from s

Low-Velocity Penetrating Cranial Trauma With a Retained Axe: Surgical Management and Operative Challenges in a Civilian Assault Case.

Penetrating brain injury (PBI) is a rare but potentially life-threatening form of traumatic brain injury characterized by violation of the skull and dura by a foreign object. Civilian penetrating head injuries caused by low-velocity objects such as knives, rods, or tools are uncommon and present unique diagnostic and surgical challenges. We report the case of a 23-year-old man who presented with a retained axe embedded in the right parietal region following an assault. On arrival, the patient was conscious with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 15 but had left-sided hemiparesis. Non-contrast compu
