Physicochemical Characterization, Cytotoxicity, and In Vivo Evaluation of a Hydroxyapatite-Silver Composite for Bone Regeneration.

This study is aimed at characterizing the physicochemical and biological properties of a hydroxyapatite-silver (HAp-Ag) composite for bone regeneration. HAp and HAp-Ag powders were analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and fluorescence, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Cylindrical pellets obtained by powder pressing and sintering were evaluated for fracture toughness, compressive strength, relative density, porosity, and wettability. Cell viability was assessed using the Alamar Blue assay. In the in vivo

Atlas of Arctic bone modification.

Skeletal bones and antlers from past generations of wildlife are frequently found and consumed by other animals, living out a second life as an important dietary resource. Such gnawing may leave characteristic modifications, including tooth marks, providing physical evidence of a behavior and nutrient resource that is often challenging to directly observe and quantify. Documenting and interpreting features of bone modification can fill knowledge gaps regarding species' behavioral ecology, nutrient requirements, and interactions in modern ecosystems, as well as in historical, archaeological, an

Development and validation of a deep learning model for automatic detection of depressed skull fractures from CT scans.

BACKGROUND: Depressed skull fractures with bone depression greater than in one cortex might cause major consequences and require surgery in traumatic head injury patients. Therefore, skull fractures with depression in more than one cortex must be identified quickly and accurately. METHODS: This study proposes using a deep learning model to deal with the task. Cranial CT scans of traumatic head injury patients with and without depressed skull fractures were collected for this retrospective investigation. A real-time object detection model, You Only Look Once (YOLO), was adopted to detect depre

Risk factors associated with significant posttraumatic brain hemorrhage as per the QueBIC categories: A retrospective multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Among adults with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), only a minority develop clinically significant intracranial hemorrhage requiring neurosurgical intervention or causing death. The Quebec Brain Injury Categories (QueBIC) stratifies risk based on computed tomography (CT) morphology, with complications occurring mainly in moderate/high-risk categories. Identifying pre-CT clinical predictors of these categories could help prioritize imaging and monitoring. We aimed to identify such predictors in complicated mTBI and assess concordance between QueBIC and the Canadian CT Head Rule (C

Conservative versus surgical management of mandibular condylar fractures: a comparative study.

Condylar process fractures are a common mandibular injury predominantly affecting males, with a male-to-female ratio of 3:1. This study examines outcomes in patients with mandibular condylar fractures treated either conservatively or surgically, comparing long-term subjective results. A total of 281 cases were reviewed (144 treated conservatively and 137 treated surgically), with symptoms and functional outcomes assessed through questionnaires. Surgical intervention was more common in complex cases (e.g. bilateral fractures or concurrent maxillofacial injuries), and the surgical treatment grou

Diagnostic Accuracy of Ultrasonography for Identification of Skull Fracture in Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: There is no consensus on the diagnostic performance of ultrasonography for identifying skull fractures in children, and the accuracy of this imaging modality in this age group has been questioned. This study performed a pooled analysis to explore the diagnostic performance characteristics of ultrasonography in this regard. METHODS: Three databases, Web of Science, Medline, and Scopus, were systematically searched from their inception through August 2025. Data extraction of diagnostic parameters was performed by two independent authors. Pooled estimates of the diagnostic paramete

Late-Onset Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding in Four Infants: A Forensic Pathology Case Series With Clinical-Autopsy Correlation.

Late-onset vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) remains a preventable cause of catastrophic intracranial hemorrhage in early infancy, yet continues to present complex medicolegal challenges where parental refusal of prophylactic vitamin K persists. We present four infant deaths evaluated within the Turkish medico-legal system, each lacking prophylactic vitamin K at birth, in which autopsy played a critical role in excluding alternative causes and supporting findings most consistent with VKDB. Comprehensive review of clinical records and full forensic autopsies, including neuropathologic examin

Vehicle-assisted suicidal strangulation: A case report and literature review.

Vehicle-assisted suicidal strangulation is an unusual method of suicide where the victim completes suicide by pulling a ligature tied around their neck using the acceleration of the vehicle they are driving. This report describes a case of a 48-year-old man who completed suicide by tying a rope to his neck and to a parked tractor, then using his car to pull the rope. The on-scene investigation found the body a few meters from his car, which was still running, and a snapped rope tied to a tractor nearby. The autopsy revealed a bruised, encircling ligature mark with underlying injuries to the ne

Transposing maxillofacial digital workflows to forensic reconstruction: 3D reassembly of fragmented craniofacial human remains.

Cold cases involving fragmented skeletal remains present major interpretative challenges, particularly when craniofacial trauma must be reconstructed from fragile, scattered bone fragments. In the present case, human remains discovered during excavation were severely altered and exhibited multiple craniofacial fractures. Forensic anthropologists and maxillofacial surgeons collaborated to restore cranial volume and clarify injury mechanism using a hospital-based digital workflow. All fragments were scanned using cone-beam computed tomography, manually segmented, virtually reassembled based on c

Fast MRI for Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: What Findings Are Missed Compared with Routine MRI?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a frequent indication for neuroimaging in young children. Head CT is widely available and fast, but it exposes children to ionizing radiation. Routine MRI avoids radiation but is longer and frequently requires sedation. Fast MRI without sedation is increasingly used instead of head CT in young children with head trauma, but the intracranial findings it may miss relative to routine MRI are not well defined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied children 6 years of age or younger who underwent fast brain MRI for evaluation of T

Diagnostic performance of point-of-care ultrasound for pediatric skull fractures: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

ObjectivePediatric head trauma is common, but computed tomography exposes children to ionizing radiation. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of point-of-care ultrasound for pediatric skull fractures and clarified its role as an adjunct to clinical assessment rather than a replacement for computed tomography when intracranial injury is suspected.MethodsWe conducted a systematic review and bivariate random-effects diagnostic test meta-analysis guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 statement and registered in

Neuroimaging disagreements and consequences among pediatric transfers with concern for abuse.

BACKGROUND: Previous research supports substantial differences between pediatric neuroimaging interpretations by non-pediatric and pediatric-trained radiologists, however little is known about how this applies within the context of child abuse. OBJECTIVE: Compare interpretations of head computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging studies between community/adult academic radiologists and academic pediatric neuroradiologists. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Children less than 6 years old with concern for abuse who were transferred from an outside hospital to a pediatric level I trauma center.

Role of thromboelastography in risk stratifying patients with traumatic brain injury on prehospital antiplatelet agents.

INTRODUCTION: The Brain Injury Guidelines (BIG) offer valuable criteria for identifying trauma patients requiring observation without immediate intervention. One variable evaluated in BIG is prehospital aspirin (ASA) or clopidogrel use. These patients are classified as BIG3 requiring repeat head CT and neurosurgery consultation. This study aims to investigate the rate of hemorrhage progression and neurosurgery intervention (NSI) in patients fulfilling all BIG1 criteria except prehospital ASA or clopidogrel use and how thromboelastography (TEG) with platelet mapping (PM) could be used to identi

Non-Scar Fixation Technique for Zygomaticomaxillary Complex Tripod Fracture Using Upper Lid Transconjunctival Incision.

BACKGROUND: Surgical approaches for zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures have evolved toward minimizing cutaneous incisions while maintaining adequate exposure. Conventional approaches for frontozygomatic fixation, such as lateral brow or transconjunctival incisions with lateral extension, may result in visible scarring or periocular complications. Building on previous transconjunctival techniques, we applied an independent upper eyelid transconjunctival incision as a non-cutaneous approach for frontozygomatic fixation in selected ZMC tripod fractures. METHODS: This retrospective compa

Comparative Study of Antemortem Computed Tomography (CT) Findings With Autopsy Findings in Head Injury Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Head injury is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and accurate assessment of traumatic head injuries is important for both clinical management and medicolegal investigations. Computed tomography (CT) is routinely used for the evaluation of head injuries in living patients, whereas medicolegal autopsy remains the standard method for postmortem assessment. This prospective comparative observational study was conducted to compare antemortem CT scan findings with autopsy findings in fatal head injury cases. METHODOLOGY: A total of 34 cases that underwent both antemo

Multi-Objective Optimization Design and Impact Protection Efficacy of Locally Reinforced P-TPMS Forehead Helmet Liner.

The objective of this study is to mitigate the bottom-out failure and improve the energy absorption of conventional helmet liners during high-energy impacts, thereby reducing the risk of head injuries. To this end, a locally reinforced Primitive-type triply periodic minimal surface (P-TPMS) energy-absorbing liner is proposed for the helmet forehead region, which facilitates progressive energy dissipation through layer-by-layer buckling deformation. A finite element model of a helmet-head coupling was created based on a previously verified high-fidelity head model and subsequently validated aga
