Filarial nematodes cause significant illness worldwide, including lymphatic and subcutaneous filariases in tropical regions. Dirofilaria asiatica is a recently described canine filarioid increasingly implicated in zoonotic human infections. Here, we report a patent infection in a child in Sri Lanka who had persistent microfilaraemia after 2 rounds of diethylcarbamazine treatment.

We report 2 cases of asymptomatic Dirofilaria microfilaremia in humans in Sri Lanka, detected during night blood surveillance for lymphatic filariasis in 2025. Partial sequence of microfilarial cytochrome c oxidase 1 gene revealed that both infections were caused by the novel species D. asiatica, originally described in Hong Kong as Candidatus D. honkongensis.

Current American Heartworm Society guidelines characterize prescribing macrocyclic lactone preventives in the absence of antigen testing as "NOT RECOMMENDED," regardless of compliance history or geographic prevalence. Number Needed to Screen, an established human preventive medicine framework applied here as a novel veterinary screening tool, has not previously been used to evaluate this guideline. Using county-level Companion Animal Parasite Council prevalence data and the compliance-gap distribution as a proxy, we derive geographically stratified Number Needed to Screen estimates varying app

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) causes chronic lymphoedema requiring long-term self-care, often at personal cost. In post-elimination settings such as Bangladesh, understanding the financial burden of self-care is critical for sustaining morbidity management and disability prevention (MMDP). This study evaluated self-care costs and the impact of an enhanced morbidity management protocol among people affected by filarial lymphoedema in Bangladesh.
METHODOLOGY: A longitudinal cohort study was conducted in Lalmonirhat and Thakurgaon districts (2020-2021). People affected by mild, moderate,

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis (river blindness) persists in Bo District, Sierra Leone, despite decades of ivermectin-based mass drug administration (MDA). Programmatic efforts have prioritized parasitological and ocular outcomes, so the socio-economic and psychological burden of the disease within affected communities remains poorly quantified. We aimed to determine the magnitude, structure and distribution of this non-clinical burden.
METHODS: We used an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design (QUAN → qual). In the quantitative phase, 1,500 adults across five endemic chiefdoms of Bo Distric

BACKGROUND: Canine heartworm disease remains a global threat despite the availability of multiple preventive options, a challenge compounded by the emergence of macrocyclic lactone-resistant heartworm strains, especially in the USA. Circulating microfilariae play a pivotal role in heartworm transmission, serving as a continuous infection reservoir for mosquito vectors. Therefore, targeting this life cycle stage is critical in the framework of a comprehensive and multimodal heartworm prevention strategy.
METHODS: A randomised, blinded, negative-controlled laboratory study evaluated the efficac

Culex (Cx.) quinquefasciatus, an important vector of lymphatic filariasis, poses a major public health challenge due to the emergence of insecticide resistance and increasing environmental concerns associated with conventional control measures. This study aimed to characterize a soil isolate of Lysinibacillus sp. and evaluate its potential as a nanoformulated microbial biopesticide against Cx. quinquefasciatus. The isolate was characterized based on morphology, haemolytic activity, scanning electron microscopy, growth kinetics, protein profiling, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Lysinibacillus sp

BACKGROUND: For lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination, the World Health Organization recommends multiple rounds of mass drug administration (MDA) to interrupt transmission. While LF antigen (Ag) is routinely used to monitor progress, recent evidence suggests more time-sensitive indicators are needed during the immediate post-MDA period. In Samoa, triple-drug MDA was distributed in 2018 and 2023. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Samoa's second round of triple-drug MDA on human and mosquito-based indicators of transmission.
METHODOLOGY: Surveys were conducted in eight primary sampling

BACKGROUND: Chronic helminth infections cause serious health problems; however, limited data on prevalence and distribution hinder effective control interventions. This study assessed the prevalence, distribution, and risk factors of helminth infections in adults across four health districts (HD) in the Littoral Region of Cameroon, while hypothesizing that helminth infection prevalences are significantly higher in densely forested and wetland forest plantation districts compared to degraded and mosaic plantation forest districts despite over more than two decades of preventive chemotherapy.

Albendazole (ALB), a benzimidazole antiparasitic, is widely used in mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns against lymphatic filariasis (LF). It is rapidly metabolized to its active form, albendazole sulfoxide (ALB-OX), which exhibits considerable interindividual variability (IIV) in pharmacokinetics (PK). This variation may affect ALB efficacy in MDA programs. We developed a population pharmacokinetic (PopPK) model characterizing ALB and ALB-OX exposure and identifying demographic and clinical covariates contributing to IIV in patients with LF and healthy individuals. BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis elimination programs increasingly rely on rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) that detect antibodies to the Ov16 antigen, yet the performance of currently available rapid tests remains uncertain. The commercially available SD BIOLINE Ov16 RDT has shown inconsistent sensitivity when used on whole blood and does not consistently meet international performance thresholds for mapping or decisions to stop mass drug administration (MDA). Two novel onchocerciasis RDTs have been developed, DDTD RDT and GADx RDT, but their diagnostic accuracy has not been fully evaluated using meth

Dirofilaria repens is a zoonotic parasite expanding across Europe due to climate change. We hypothesised that in this process, the Carpathian Basin has a facilitating effect. Using 426 georeferenced European cases, the probability of infection occurrence was determined in relation to climatic factors, surface water availability, regional social deprivation, and stray dog population density. To analyse the potential impacts of ecological and social factors (deprivation and stray dog population density), the MaxEnt algorithm, and spatial Empirical Bayes smoothing and bivariate local indicators o

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) remains endemic in several island communities in Indonesia despite mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns. Investigating the spatial relationship between human cases and potential mosquito breeding sites may help explain the persistence of LF transmission.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2019 across four sub-villages in two LF-endemic villages in Belitung Regency, Indonesia: Suak Gual village (Suak Gual sub-village) and Lasar village (Batumana, Dudat, and Ulin sub-villages). Thick blood smears were collected at night from 671 particip

BACKGROUND: The current prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) in the People's Republic of China (P. R. China) demonstrates geographical heterogeneities, which show that the TB prevalence in the remote areas of Western China is more serious than that in the coastal plain of Eastern China. Although a lot of ecological studies have been applied in the exploration on the regional difference of disease risks, there is still a paucity of ecological studies on TB prevalence in P. R. China.
OBJECTIVE: To understand the underlying factors contributing to the regional inequity of TB burden in P. R. China by

The rebound behavior of droplets impacting superhydrophobic surfaces is ubiquitous in natural and industrial processes and is closely associated with a wide range of practical applications. In special application scenarios such as aircraft and high-altitude equipment, surfaces are often subjected to both vibration and low pressure. However, existing studies are mostly based on atmospheric pressure or stationary surfaces. It remains unclear how moderate low pressure and external vibration jointly affect droplet spreading. In this work, high-speed photography was employed to first investigate th

The spread of dirofilariosis, as a newly emerging zoonosis, due to global changes has been documented in several Central European countries. In Slovakia, the first autochthonous case of dirofilariosis was recorded in dogs in 2005. The first case of human subcutaneous dirofilariosis caused by Dirofilaria repens was diagnosed in a 60- year-old patient from an area of western Slovakia. We report another case of dirofilariosis in a 37-year-old woman living in the same area of south-western Slovakia. The infection manifested as a painful, inflamed nodule on the back of the left hand, containing an

BACKGROUND: In recent years, traditional point-of-care tests (POCTs) for diagnosing human filariasis have demonstrated substantial limitations, raising concerns regarding their reliability in the current epidemiological context, in which numerous countries are approaching the elimination of human filariasis. Consequently, there is a need for new molecular tests that allow the simultaneous and reliable detection of multiple human filarial species, even in cases of very low microfilaremia.

BACKGROUND: Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention (MMDP) practices are essential in mitigating the progression of lymphedema and in preventing episodes of adenolymphangitis. Despite their importance, patients' adherence to these prescribed practices has frequently been found to be suboptimal. Currently, there is a lack of a standardized tool for the objective assessment of patients' adherence to MMDP practices in patients with filarial lymphedema. This study was undertaken to develop a scoring system for assessing patients' adherence to MMDP and to validate this among patients attendi

BACKGROUND: Loiasis is a chronic filarial infection endemic to Central and West Africa. Although long considered benign, increasing evidence links loiasis to substantial morbidity and mortality. The infection is associated with immune modulation, including Th2-skewed responses and elevated regulatory cytokines. Clinically, loiasis is classified as microfilaremic (presence of circulating microfilariae) or amicrofilaremic ("occult") disease, the latter defined by a history of eyeworm migration without detectable microfilaremia. This study investigated how chronic L. loa infection influences anti
