Study of the Impact on Zygomatic Bone Using Numerical Simulation.

UNLABELLED: The zygomatic bone, a fundamental structure in facial anatomy, is exposed to fractures in impact situations, such as traffic accidents or contact sports. The installation of zygomatic implants can also alter the distribution of forces in this region, increasing the risk of fractures. To evaluate this situation, the first step is to develop a complex anatomical model from the stomatognathic point of view so that simulations in this sense can be validated. This study uses numerical simulation using a finite-element method (FEM) to analyze the behavior of the zygomatic bone under impa

Does maxillary sinus size affect the risk for zygomatic complex fractures?

The purpose of the study was to measure the maxillary sinus sizes in patients with and without zygomatic bone fractures. In this cross-sectional study computed tomography data of a case group of consecutive treated patients with displaced zygomatic bone fractures were compared to a control group with mandibular fractures. Maxillary sinus sizes were measured in width, height, depth, and volume. We compared sinus sizes between the case and control group, followed by a subgroup analysis of slightly and severely displaced fractures using T-tests. We identified 89 cases, thereof 46 with slightly an

One-piece Craniofacial Bone Fracture Reduction With an Additional Single Osteotomy at the Zygomaticomaxillary Buttress: A Successful Reduction of Frontoorbitozygomaticomaxillary Fracture Associated With a Temporoparietal Bone Fracture.

A frontoorbitozygomaticomaxillary fracture, also known as a complex midface fracture or "quadripod fracture," is a type of facial fracture involving multiple midface region bones. This includes the frontal bone (forehead), orbitozygomatic complex (which includes the zygomatic bone or cheekbone and the orbital bones around the eye), and the maxillary bone (upper jaw). These complex midface fractures associated with temporoparietal bone fractures can occur in clinical practice. However, a single-piece fracture of these has not been reported before. This study reports a 44-year-old male patient w

Time-to-operation delays and in-hospital complications in operative facial trauma: A national analysis.

BACKGROUND: Management of facial fractures is variable. Understanding how time to operative management impacts outcomes can help standardize practice. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the ACS Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) database between 2016 and 2019. Adult patients with operative facial fractures were isolated by ICD-10 procedure codes, and further stratified by fracture location, including the mandible, orbit, maxilla, zygoma, and frontal bone. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to predict in-hospital complications (both surgical and systemic complications) adju

Facial Fracture Injury Criteria from Night Vision Goggle Impact.

INTRODUCTION: Military personnel extensively use night vision goggles (NVGs) in contemporary scenarios. Since NVGs may induce or increase injuries from falls or vehicular accidents, biomechanical risk assessments would aid design goal or mitigation strategy development.METHODS: This study assesses injury risks from NVG impact on cadaver heads using impactors modeled on the PVS-14 NVG. Impacts to the zygoma and maxilla were performed at 20° or 40° angles. Risks of facial fracture, neurotrauma, and neck injury were assessed. Acoustic sensors and accelerometers assessed time of fracture and provi
