Injuries to teeth can be very distressing for patients. Prompt treatment is essential. Injuries of the tooth bearing portion of the mandible are common and can even result after a relatively low impact trauma. The alveolus (tooth bearing portion of bone) and/or the tooth may be damaged. Segmental fractures involve multiple teeth and the supporting alveolar bone.

Fractures of the midface constitute half of all traumas involving facial bones. Computed tomography is very useful in primary diagnosis. Isolated fractures of the nasal bone and lateral midfacial structures may be diagnosed sufficiently by conventional x-rays. An exact description of the fracture lines along the midfacial buttresses is essential for treatment planning. For good aesthetics and function these have to be reconstructed accurately, which can be checked with x-rays. The treatment of midfacial fractures has been revolutionized over the last two decades. A stabile three-dimensional re

A prospective study of 140 intruded permanent teeth was done to evaluate the following healing complications: pulp necrosis (PN), root resorption (surface, inflammatory and replacement resorption) (RR) and defects in marginal periodontal healing (MA). These complications were related to various preinjury and injury factors. Age appeared to be related to all three healing complications in that patients younger than 12 years had the lowest complication rate. Stage of root formation at the time of the injury was very strongly related to PN and MA, with immature root formation (i.e. incomplete roo

Implant-supported restorations in the upper anterior segment need to meet biological, functional, and esthetic requirements to be successful. Bone availability and soft-tissue characteristics in the area of implant placement are crucial for achieving maximum success. This article describes the steps involved in replacing a fractured upper central incisor with an implant-supported crown. Using surgical techniques involving extraction socket preservation/augmentation and connective tissue grafting, ideal positioning of the implant was possible and gingival contours were idealized. With this mult

Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with refined titanium plates and screws have revolutionized the surgical treatment of complex facial fractures, but its outcome remains relatively unknown. The purpose of this study is to review the results of modern surgical treatment of complex facial fractures involving at least two of the three zones of the face. From 1996 to 2002, 54 consecutive patients (41 males, 13 females; age 5-74 years) with complex facial fractures were treated by the plastic surgery service in our institution. All patients had their fractures repaired within 10 days afte

The management of facial gunshot wounded patients requires the coordination of multiple surgical disciplines to optimize the functional and cosmetic outcome while minimizing overall morbidity and mortality. All reports indicate that early management of these patients must focus on the basis of resuscitation, with major attention given to the status of maintaining the airway, hemostasis and hemodynamic resuscitation. Subsequent management of these patients becomes more controversial in terms of surgical reconstruction: immediate or delayed. Involvement of the use of suicide bombers, the type of

BACKGROUND: Although maxillofacial injuries in the elderly population frequently result from falls and motor vehicle crashes, the association between osteoporosis and fractures of the maxillofacial region remains poorly defined.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between osteoporosis and maxillofacial trauma in the elderly. DESIGN, SETTING, AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A retrospective review of 59 patients 60 years or older treated for maxillofacial fractures at a trauma center between 1989 and 2000 was performed. The severity of osteoporosis was graded by evaluating the radiographic appea

Mandibular fractures in children treated in our department between March 1994 and January 2001 were retrospectively studied. Age, sex, type of fracture, etiology and evolution after treatment, functional mobility and maximal mouth opening were recorded. The population consisted of 19 patients who sustained 30 fractures. The patients ages ranged from 1.5 to 18 years. The mean time of follow up was 28 months. The male to female ratio was 1.7:1. Traffic and bicycle accidents were the main causes of the fractures. The condyle was involved in 16% of the cases, the subcondylar region in 28%. Fractur

Various statistics have shown that avulsion (total displacement of tooth out of its socket) following traumatic injuries is relatively infrequent, ranging from 0.5 to 16% of traumatic injuries in the permanent dentition. The maxillary central incisors are the most frequently avulsed teeth. Avulsion of teeth occurs most often in children from 7 to 9 years of age, when the permanent incisors are erupting. Most frequently, avulsion involves a single tooth; but multiple avulsion are occasionally encountered. Fractures of the alveolar socket wall are often associate with avulsion. After the tooth i

Nasal bone fractures are the most common among facial fractures and are the third most common fractures in the human frame. Although many forms of treatment have been introduced, controversy regarding the optimal treatment still remains. Nasal bone fractures are complex, with significantly varying types that are often undermanaged in closed reduction procedures. The authors' experiences with nasal bone fractures have shown that the baseline for surgical intervention depends on the type of fracture and the method of maintenance after reduction, both of which have considerable impact on the fina

As the number of high velocity injuries increases, orbital wall fractures that involve other facial bone fractures, especially those showing multiple crushed fractures have become increasingly common. However, owing to its complex anatomic structure, our inability to visualize details and relatively thin orbital wall, corrective restorations and fixations are very difficult. Recently several reports have claimed good results using titanium implants to repair orbital fracture. Over a period of 36 months, Titanium mesh screen 1.0 (SYNTHES) were applied to the repair of orbital fracture in variou

PURPOSE: This study evaluated variability in the clinical parameters commonly used to characterize mandible fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Inter-rater reliability of 18 oral and maxillofacial surgeons was assessed using radiographs of 22 cases of mandible fractures. Raters were asked to evaluate each case based on several parameters including number, location, and displacement of the individual fractures and severity of the composite injury. To evaluate intra-rater reliability, selected cases were reviewed at a second session by a subgroup of these surgeons. Tests of concordance used to qua
