BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often causes persistent balance and gait deficits, especially in mild-to-moderate TBI (mmTBI). Physical therapy is standard but often limited as a standalone treatment. Translingual neural stimulation (TLNS) is an emerging neuromodulation approach combining cranial nerve stimulation with targeted exercise to promote neuroplasticity and recovery. Its effects on cortical surface morphometry in mmTBI remain uninvestigated.
METHODS: This secondary analysis used data from a completed clinical trial (NCT02158494). Nine chronic mmTBI patients underwent a two-

Extralaryngeal bifurcation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is common anatomical variation, but the multifurcation of the RLN with more than three branches is quite rare. Intraoperative neuromonitoring evaluating functional status of the nerve branches shows that the branched RLN may have functional variation. Identification and electrophysiological monitoring of the RLN can localize motor fibers within nerve branches and help preserve motor function.

BACKGROUND: Total occlusion of the common carotid artery (CCA) from its origin is rare, occurring in less than 1% of brachiocephalic stenoses. Surgical revascularization is technically demanding, especially with tandem severe ipsilateral internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis. Procedures under regional anesthesia with continuous neurologic monitoring are rarely described.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate outcomes of subclavian-to-internal carotid artery bypass with carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in symptomatic patients with total CCA occlusion and severe ipsilateral ICA stenosis under regional anesthesia

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative facial nerve monitoring (IONM) can be used during parotidectomy. However, its effect on operative duration remains controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association between IONM use and operative duration in parotidectomy.
METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library was conducted for studies published up to January 2026. Studies reporting operative duration for parotidectomy performed with and without IONM were included. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed independently by review

Dendrite degeneration is an early pathological feature following axonal damage, yet its role during successful axonal regeneration remains poorly understood. Using sparse labeling of retinal ganglion cells in adult zebrafish, we show that axonal regeneration is accompanied by a transient phase of dendritic pruning following optic nerve crush. Dendritic pruning occurs during axon elongation and is reversed after brain reinnervation. Although insulin-mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling is rapidly upregulated immediately after injury, it is subsequently suppressed, coinciding with de

Glaucoma is increasingly recognized as a multifactorial neurodegenerative optic neuropathy in which intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of several stress amplifiers rather than a sufficient etiological explanation. Vascular dysregulation, mitochondrial and metabolic vulnerability, oxidative stress, excitotoxicity, glial dysregulation, and persistent neuroimmune activation can converge on retinal ganglion cell (RGC) and optic nerve injury. This broader framework is particularly relevant to normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), which represents a large proportion of primary open-angle glaucoma in Asian p

Peripheral nerve injury leads to persistent motor and sensory dysfunction and is increasingly recognized to induce alterations in central sensorimotor networks. However, most current repair strategies primarily focus on peripheral regeneration, with limited understanding of its relationship to central neural changes. Here, we performed clinical resting-state functional magnetic resonance (rs-fMRI) in patients with facial nerve injury and identified the sensorimotor network alterations associated with the nerve injury. Guided by the results, we developed a tissue-engineered fibrous nerve guidan

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is a reliable tool to detect electromyographic loss of signal (LOS). Here, we investigated the effect of electromyography features of traction-related LOS on prognosis.
METHODS: Thyroidectomy patients with a traction-related LOS were included. The cases were divided into four groups as follows: Type 1 LOS with no amplitude (0 μV) (Group 1), Type 1 LOS with low-amplitude (1-99 μV) (Group 2), Type 2 LOS with no amplitude (Group 3), and Type 2 LOS with low-amplitude (Group 4).
RESULTS: A total of 788 patients (1429 nerves) were analyzed. Tractio

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of literature on the anatomical variations of the cervical branch of the facial nerve (CBFN). Poor awareness of its anatomy and variations risks intraoperative damage, misdiagnosis of facial nerve injury and undesirable functional and aesthetic outcomes for patients.
PURPOSE: To review anatomical studies on the CBFN and synthesise data on its course, innervations and common variations.
METHODS: A PRISMA-compliant systematic review of anatomical studies of the cervical branch of the facial nerve was conducted. PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Sci

Wallerian degeneration (WD) is a conserved axonal self-destruction program implicated in a spectrum of neurological conditions, including peripheral neuropathies, traumatic brain injury, and possibly neurodegenerative diseases. Wallerian degeneration is triggered by depletion of the NAD+-synthesizing enzyme NMNAT2, subsequent NMN accumulation, and activation of the NAD+-hydrolyzing SARM1, ultimately driving axonal fragmentation. While pharmacological inhibition of SARM1 is an emerging therapeutic strategy, current challenges due to paradoxical toxicity with orthosteric base-exchange SARM1 inhi

Voice change is an uncommon but clinically important complication of thyroid radiofrequency ablation (RFA), because it may indicate injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve or, less commonly, the vagus nerve. Early recognition and appropriate intervention are important, because neural dysfunction may remain reversible before the occurrence of irreversible structural nerve injury. Thermal nerve injury during thyroid RFA is not always a single instantaneous event. Rather, it may involve direct thermal exposure of the nerves, leading to acute endoneurial or perineural edema, microvascular compromi

Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is commonly used during thyroid surgery to facilitate recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) identification and potentially reduce related postoperative complications. However, the efficacy of routine IONM in decreasing complication rates remains debated. In this study, we investigated the impact of IONM on postoperative complications after thyroidectomy. This retrospective single-center study included 214 thyroidectomy operations performed between 2021 and 2024. Patients were divided into 2 groups: Group 1 (n = 107) underwent surgery with routine IONM, and Group

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop an explainable machine learning (ML) framework integrating clinical, imaging, and procedural features for predicting recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury risk during microwave ablation (MWA) of thyroid nodules.
METHODS: A retrospective study is conducted using data from 254 patients who underwent thyroid nodule MWA. Recursive feature elimination (RFE) with 5 × fivefold cross-validation selected 12 optimal features across four ML models: logistic regression (LR), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM). Model performance

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The anterior transpetrosal approach (ATA) is a valuable option for accessing the petroclival region, although it can be associated with considerable morbidity. The objective of the study was to provide a detailed description of the anatomic relationship between key neurovascular structures encountered in the ATA, to facilitate crucial steps of the approach.
METHODS: ATA has been performed on 34 sides in cadaveric heads. The extent of drilling was divided into standard ATA and extended ATA with removal of the petrous apex below the mandibular nerve (V3) and Gasserian

BACKGROUND Hemodynamically stable penetrating neck trauma with retained deep foreign bodies can conceal functionally significant neural injury despite absence of major vascular findings on computed tomography angiography. In selected cases, early laryngoscopy may provide decisive functional evidence and help identify occult recurrent laryngeal nerve injury requiring timely surgical exploration. CASE REPORT A 45-year-old woman presented with penetrating neck trauma caused by multiple glass fragments, with Zone II entry wounds and a deep transcervical trajectory across zones. She was hemodynamic

OBJECTIVES: To test whether unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) transection elicits side specific transcriptomic responses in rat vocal fold compartments. We compared the medial thyroarytenoid (MTA) muscle and mucosa on the left versus right, accounting for baseline laterality.
METHODS: Unilateral RLN transection was performed in five adult rats (Left RLN: 2-males, 1-female; Right RLN: 1-male, 1-female). 5-weeks post-injury, the medial thyroarytenoid (MTA) muscle and vocal fold mucosa were harvested for RNA sequencing. Differential expression analysis compared Left-denervated versus Ri

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionised the management of advanced malignancies, but can cause immune-related adverse events (irAEs), including vision-threatening complications such as optic neuropathy. Ocular irAEs have been described with several programmed death-1/programmed death-ligand 1 and cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 inhibitors, but ocular toxicities of tislelizumab have so far been limited to Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH)-like uveitis, panuveitis and retinal vasculitis. PURPOSE: Brachial plexus birth injuries (BPBI) can be life-changing for both the patient and family. While most resolve spontaneously, surgical intervention is indicated for those who fail to improve. This can be performed via nerve grafting or nerve transfer. The spinal accessory nerve is a commonly used extraplexal donor in brachial plexus surgery. In cases of BPBI, it can be transferred to the musculocutaneous nerve to restore elbow flexion. While there are short-term reports in BPBI, few, if any, long-term outcome data are available.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwe
