High infection risk of intestinal helminths despite WASH interventions: A cross-sectional study in Khammouane province, Lao PDR.

BACKGROUND: Despite the widespread implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) program over the last two decades, Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) remains highly endemic for intestinal helminth infections. We assessed the intestinal helminth infections burden and the link with WASH levels in an area with WASH interventions. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted across 81 villages in Khammouane province, Lao PDR, where WASH interventions were implemented. Villages and 30 participants (aged 18-87 years) per village were randomly selected. Demographics, individual an

Comparative genomic and functional insights into life-cycle plasticity and host adaptation in a wild Nippostrongylus brasiliensis strain from Guangzhou.

BACKGROUND: Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (rat hookworm) is a key model for studying human hookworm infection. RESULTS: A wild N. brasiliensis isolate from Guangzhou maintains high fecundity for 10 days and persists for 21 days in rats, which is twice as long as reported for reference strains, but survives only 10 to 11 days in mice while causing more severe pathology than that observed in rats. Comparative genomic, transcriptomic, and functional analyses were conducted to explore potential genetic factors associated with these phenotypic differences. Whole-genome sequencing revealed 92.6-93.3

Prevalence of hookworm infection and its proportion among pregnant women with intestinal helminth infection in Ethiopia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hookworms are the most common soil-transmitted helminths in tropical and subtropical regions. Although infection with hookworms is a principal cause of maternal anemia, there is limited consolidated evidence on pooled prevalence and its proportion among intestinal helminths infections in pregnant women in Ethiopia. This study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of infection with hookworms and its proportion among intestinal helminths in pregnant women in Ethiopia. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. Articles published

Spatial patterns and risk mapping of opisthorchiasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections in Thailand using Bayesian geostatistical models.

Opisthorchis viverrini and soil-transmitted helminths (STH) remain major public health challenges in Thailand due to their widespread distribution. This study aimed to map and predict the prevalence of O. viverrini and STH infections across Thailand and to identify key environmental, climatic, and socio-economic factors influencing their geographical distribution. Bayesian geostatistical logistic regression models were fitted to national survey data to estimate infection risk and generate high-resolution spatial predictions. Demographic (sex, age), environmental (land surface temperature, vege

Effectiveness of the BALatrine intervention on soil-transmitted helminth infections in Central Java, Indonesia: a cluster-randomised controlled trial.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) remain a global health challenge, particularly in areas lacking improved sanitation. We evaluated the effectiveness of an integrated BALatrine (an improved pit-latrine) intervention to prevent STH in Central Java, Indonesia. We conducted a cluster-randomized controlled trial involving 2155 participants in 8 village clusters between October 2016 and October 2017. Intervention villages received mass drug administration (MDA), the BALatrine, and community hygiene education, while the control group received only MDA. Follow-up stool samples were collected 12 months

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN MACROCYCLIC LACTONE AND BENZIMIDAZOLE RESISTANCE IN THE DOG HOOKWORM ANCYLOSTOMA CANINUM.

Anthelmintic resistance is a growing threat to the treatment and control of parasitic nematode infections in both humans and animals. In the canine hookworm, Ancylostoma caninum, multi-anthelmintic drug-resistant (MADR) isolates have been identified, but the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance and the potential for these mechanisms to promote cross-resistance between drug classes remain unclear. In this study, we report evidence for a previously uncharacterized association between resistance to macrocyclic lactones (MLs) and benzimidazoles (BZs) in A. caninum. In a wild-type isolate wit

Long-lasting helminthic infection in African migrants to Israel - Lessons from the field.

Various forms of voluntary migration have been and remain among the leading causes of the worldwide dispersal of parasites. Although helminthic infections are common in Africa, they are rare in Israel, making diagnosis challenging for many clinicians. We present 22 years of experience diagnosing under-recognized, long-lasting helminthic infections in migrants from African countries: Strongyloides stercoralis (up to 24 years), Schistosoma mansoni (up to 15 years), and hookworm (up to 12 years).

Molecular identification of zoonotic hookworms in environmentally collected canine fecal samples in Northern Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Hookworm infections remain an important public health and veterinary concern in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in communities with close human-animal interactions and limited sanitation. Dogs are recognized as reservoirs of zoonotic hookworms, yet species-level infection data in endemic areas remain lacking because the widely utilized microscopic examination of stool samples cannot differentiate morphologically indistinguishable hookworm eggs. METHODS: Environmentally deposited canine fecal samples (n = 72) were collected from five barangays in Gonzaga, Cagayan, No

Intestinal Parasitic Infections and Respiratory Morbidity in Children with Sickle Cell Disease in French Guiana: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections are common in tropical settings and may influence immune regulation, allergic responses, and respiratory health. In children with sickle cell disease (SCD), respiratory morbidity is multifactorial, and the contribution of intestinal parasites remains uncertain. This study assessed whether documented intestinal parasitic infections, particularly helminth infections, were associated with asthma-like respiratory phenotypes and clinical morbidity in children with SCD in French Guiana. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter cross-sectional analysis of child

Chest pain and eosinophilia in a middle-aged female caused by hookworm infection: a case report.

Hookworm infection, while often asymptomatic, may rarely cause Löffler syndrome. We report the case of a 45-year-old female farmer who presented with a 10-year history of recurrent chest pain. Laboratory tests revealed marked eosinophilia (33.4%) and microcytic anemia. Cardiac and abdominal imaging findings were normal. Stool microscopy confirmed hookworm infection. Treatment of oral mebendazole (400 mg twice daily) for three days resulted in complete resolution of symptoms, normalization of eosinophil count, and clearance of parasites on follow-up. This case highlights hookworm infection as a

Cohort profile: the Entebbe Mother and Baby Study (EMaBS).

PURPOSE: The Entebbe Mother and Baby Study (EMaBS) was established in 2001 to test the hypothesis that treating helminth infections during pregnancy and early childhood could improve children's responses to Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and other vaccines given in infancy and influence immune responses to other infectious pathogens. Follow-up was subsequently extended to address further research questions and continue to the present day. PARTICIPANTS: Two thousand five hundred and seven pregnant women were recruited when attending antenatal services at Entebbe General Hospital, Uganda; 2345
