Human infection by Trichostrongylus sp in Tunisia: Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Nematodes of the Trichostrongylus genus are primarily parasitic in herbivores, although sporadic zoonotic infections have been documented in various countries, including Iran, the Far East, and Australia. In Tunisia, one case has been reported, rendering this parasitic infection relatively unknown. OBSERVATION: A 3-year-old female patient, congenitally monorenal, presented to the pediatric department at Charles Nicolle Hospital in Tunis with symptoms of anorexia, weight loss, and growth retardation. Hematological analysis revealed anemia concomitant with hypereosinophilia. The p

Sex-Specific Immune Responses Mediate Host Specificity in Hookworm Infections.

Hookworm infections affect 500-700 million people worldwide and can lead to chronic conditions, such as malnutrition and anemia. The challenge of managing these infections is heightened by the absence of effective vaccines and the potential for anthelmintic resistance to develop. A comprehensive understanding of the molecular interactions between the parasite and host is vital for unraveling the complexities of infection dynamics. This study aimed to identify the immune system components responsible for host specificity in hookworms by infecting immunodeficient mouse models. Findings herein in

Soil-transmitted helminthiasis among adolescents in Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State, Nigeria: Insights and recommendations for effective control.

Over the past decade, Anambra State, Nigeria, has implemented mass administration of medicines (MAMs) to combat soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH), a significant public health challenge in low-income regions. Nevertheless, these efforts have predominantly focused on pre-school and school-aged children, leaving a notable gap in understanding STH infection rates and the efficacy of these campaigns among secondary school adolescents, who have been excluded from this initiative. Our study aimed to address this critical knowledge gap by assessing soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) prevalence an

Protective effects of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis-derived uridine via the apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter in a mouse model of TNBS-induced inflammatory bowel disease.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a chronic immune-mediated gastrointestinal disorder mainly covering Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, has an unclear etiology. The exploration of novel intervention strategies remains a key scientific issue that is urgently needed for IBD treatment. The hygiene hypothesis has led researchers to notice that worm infections can regulate the immune system, which might help treat inflammatory diseases. Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (Nb), similar to human hookworms in life cycle and symptoms, is often used in hookworm research. Our previous study

Not your typical hookworm infection-a case report from the Peruvian Amazon and review of the literature.

Human hookworm infection is caused by the nematodes Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale, and Ancylostoma ceylanicum. Iron deficiency anemia is the hallmark of chronic, moderate-to-heavy-intensity infections, promoting a vicious poverty cycle. Overt severe and acute life-threatening lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage is an extremely rare manifestation of hookworm infection, as well as finding multiple nematodes attached to the colonic mucosae. This rare hookworm presentation with hematochezia from the colon in a patient living with human immunodeficiency virus highlights the importance of

Previous hookworm infection attenuates the immune response to a subsequent Schistosoma mansoni infection in an experimental model.

This study investigated the co-infection dynamics of Schistosoma mansoni and Ancylostoma ceylanicum in an experimental model. Two experiments were conducted to investigate varying infection orders. In experimental group 1, subjects were initially infected with A. ceylanicum, followed by S. mansoni infection. In group 2, subjects were first infected with S. mansoni, followed by A. ceylanicum infection. The co-infected groups were compared to mono-infected groups for further analysis. Parameters assessed included weight, fecal egg elimination, blood cell counts, IgG response, histopathological a

Harnessing Molecular Techniques to Inform Species-Specific Hookworm Prevalence and Infection Intensity and Detect Strongyloides in Dak Lak Province, Vietnam.

Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) is an increasingly recognized diagnostic tool for soil-transmitted helminths (STHs), overcoming limitations of microscopy. We compared qPCR with Kato-Katz (KK) and sodium nitrate flotation (SNF; specific gravities 1.2 and 1.3) in determining STH prevalence and infection intensity using samples from a community survey of 351 people in Dak Lak province, Vietnam. Established correlation formulas were used to convert qPCR cycle threshold values to eggs per gram to compare infection intensity. Sensitivity, specificity, and agreement between methods were

A Honduran Prevalence Study on Soil-Transmitted Helminths Highlights Serological Antibodies to Tm-WAP49 as a Diagnostic Marker for Exposure to Human Trichuriasis.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections rank among the most prevalent communicable diseases of humans, yet detection of these parasites is mostly restricted to identifying active infection through fecal examinations. Currently, there are no commercial diagnostic tools to identify a prior whipworm or hookworm exposure, and the few serological assays for roundworm infection have not been well validated for crossreactivity or infections in humans. Such diagnostic restrictions limit the range of scientific and clinical questions that surround STH exposures and their implicated relationship to c

Performance of real-time polymerase chain reaction and Kato-Katz for diagnosing soil-transmitted helminth infections and evaluating treatment efficacy of emodepside in randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends the use of the microscopy-based Kato-Katz thick smear for diagnosing soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections. Despite its simplicity and cost-effectiveness, the Kato-Katz method faces challenges, including reader subjectivity and reduced sensitivity. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technology offers standardized readouts and higher sensitivity, making it suitable for STH diagnosis and monitoring the treatment efficacy of emodepside within the framework of randomized controlled trials. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We evaluat

Case Report: Endoscopic examination improves the diagnosis of inconspicuous helminth infections in adults in Shanghai.

With advancements in medical care and improved public health in China, the incidence of hookworm infections has significantly decreased, particularly in first-tier cities. We report a case of severe microcytic hypochromic anaemia caused by hookworm disease. The patient received multiple blood transfusions for unexplained anaemia, with negative faecal smear results. GI endoscopic examination revealed hookworms in the pyloric ring, antrum, and duodenum, which were removed using biopsy forceps. Morphological analysis identified the worms as Ancylostoma duodenale. The patient was treated with a si

Synthesis and Multidisciplinary Preclinical Investigations of Ferrocenyl, Ruthenocenyl, and Benzyl Derivatives of Thiabendazole as New Drug Candidates against Soil-Transmitted Helminth Infections.

An estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide are infected with at least one parasitic nematode species classified as soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). The recommended control strategy is to reduce morbidity using a single oral dose of the benzimidazole drugs, albendazole and mebendazole. The extensive use of benzimidazoles over the last decades has increased the risk of emerging drug resistance. Additional drawbacks, such as insufficient drug efficacy, particularly against hookworm and whipworm infections, highlight the urgent need for new and improved treatment options. In this work, we present

Intestinal parasitic infections among BaAka Pygmies and Bantu people living in the rain forests in Lobaye Prefecture, Central African Republic.

BACKGROUND: Central African Republic (CAR) is one of the poorest countries in the world with nearly 65% of its inhabitants living in extreme poverty, and 87% lacking access to safely managed sanitation facilities. Poor sanitation and limited access to healthcare contribute to high transmission of intestinal parasitoses. The present study aimed to assess the occurrence of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) in two separate ethnic groups inhabiting the rainforests in the Lobaye Prefecture in the southern parts of the CAR: the nomadic BaAka Pygmies and the sedentary Bantu people. In addition,
