Background: Inside-out meniscal repair is a widely adopted treatment for lateral meniscal injuries. A significant complication associated with this procedure is iatrogenic peroneal nerve (PN) injury, reported in approximately 9% of cases. The risk varies depending on the choice of surgical portals, curvature of repair devices, and anatomical landmarks. This study aimed to assess the risk of PN injury and define safe zones for inside-out lateral meniscal repair using different device curvatures and portal combinations. Methods: Axial MRI scans of knees positioned in the figure-of-four posture,

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Bilateral cavernous sinus (CS) dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are uncommon, and transarterial embolization (TAE) via the pharyngeal trunk of the ascending pharyngeal artery (AphA) has rarely been reported.
PATIENT PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old female presented with a 1-month history of mild headache. On physical examination, no positive signs were found. Digital subtraction angiography revealed bilateral CS DAVFs. TAE via the pharyngeal trunk of the AphA using the "pressure cooker" technique was performed. After the distal pharyngeal trunk was catheterized wit

INTRODUCTION: The foramen situated on the ramus of the mandible on its medial surface is termed the mandibular foramen (MF), which opens up into a canal. The MF acts as a conduit to the inferior alveolar nerve and vessels. Determining the location of MF is very crucial to avoid injury to the inferior alveolar nerve during inferior alveolar nerve block or surgical intervention. The lingula is a tongue-shaped projection on the medial aspect of the mandible. It is important to study the variable shapes of the lingula for surgical procedures due to its relation to the neurovascular structure. The

BACKGROUND: The spinal accessory nerve is occasionally injured during brachial plexus injuries, potentially limiting its use as a donor motor nerve for reconstructive surgery. Assessing spinal accessory nerve function preoperatively is essential to optimize outcomes in brachial plexus reconstruction. The authors examined the demographics of spinal accessory nerve injury, focusing on its prevalence, predisposing factors, and potential for spontaneous recovery in patients with brachial plexus injuries.
METHODS: A total of 170 patients were included in this study. At the first visit, the spinal

PURPOSE: Traumatic brachial plexus injury may cause either partial or complete loss of arm function. Surgical reconstruction of elbow flexion using a gracilis free-functioning muscle transfer (FFMT) may be necessary. The donor nerve, which could be the spinal accessory nerve (SAN) or intercostal nerves (ICN), can affect the final muscle strength, but little is known about how they affect voluntary neuromuscular control. This study aimed to examine the differences in voluntary neuromuscular control of the FFMT gracilis reinnervated by either SAN or ICN using biomechanical measures.
METHODS: Pa

Spinal accessory nerve (SAN) to suprascapular nerve (SSN) transfer is an effective surgical option for traumatic brachial plexus injuries (BPIs) when nerve grafting is not applicable. It is performed via two approaches: anterior and posterior. Despite the theoretical advantages of the posterior approach, clinical trials have yielded variable outcomes. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of anterior and posterior approaches for SAN to SSN transfer in restoring the Range of motion (ROM) and strength of shoulder abduction and external rotation in BPIs. We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Li

Sister-chromatid cohesion mediated by the cohesin complex is critical for accurate chromosome segregation during mitosis. A key aspect of this process is the protection of cohesin at mitotic centromeres to resist spindle pulling-forces until anaphase onset. However, the mechanisms that prevent cohesin removal by its release-factor Wapl at centromeres remain incompletely understood. In this study, we identify ATRX, a chromatin remodeler of the SWI/SNF family, as a new binding protein of the cohesin complex. ATRX directly interacts with the cohesin accessory subunit Pds5B, antagonizing Wapl bind

A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines was conducted to address the PICO question: Does early (< 6 months) nerve transfer improve muscle strength outcomes when compared to late (≥ 6 months) nerve transfer for upper trunk palsy, as measured by the Medical Research Council (MRC) scale? The association between age and successful muscle function recovery was assessed as a secondary outcome. The quality of included studies was evaluated using the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS) tool. A total of 349 studies were screened, with 27 studies meeting criteria for systema

BACKGROUND: Glenohumeral dysplasia (GHD) commonly occurs following brachial plexus birth injuries and, if not addressed appropriately, can result in shoulder dysfunction. Despite its severity, there are no clearly defined surgical criteria for correcting GHD. This study compares the outcomes of end-to-end and reverse end-to-side spinal accessory to suprascapular nerve transfers for correction of GHD.
METHODS: All patients presented with shoulder functional limitations, as indicated by Active Movement Scale (AMS) scores in shoulder abduction, shoulder flexion, and external rotation, and eviden

Iatrogenic spinal accessory nerve (SAN) injuries can occur as complications of posterior triangle of the neck surgery, resulting in lateral scapular winging and a shoulder droop. Rarely has this complication been described after a cosmetic rhytidectomy (face-lift procedure). Here, we present two cases of iatrogenic SAN injuries that occurred after cosmetic rhytidectomies. The use of electrodiagnostic and ultrasound examinations provides invaluable information to assess peripheral nerve injuries. Electrodiagnostic testing can confirm the presence and severity of the injury, while ultrasound can

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the level at which the tibial nerve (TN) bifurcates about the malleolar-calcaneal axis (MCA), a key anatomical reference approximating the inferior margin of the flexor retinaculum, to document anatomical variations with potential clinical and surgical significance.
METHODOLOGY: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 60 lower limbs obtained from formalin-embalmed adult human cadavers. Following standard anatomical protocols, dissections were performed to trace the TN from its origin to its terminal branches. The medial malleo

BACKGROUND: In upper brachial plexus (C5-C6) avulsion injuries, deltoid reinnervation via radial-to-axillary nerve transfer is standard. However, fracture-dislocations around the shoulder complicate surgical exposure due to fibrosis and distorted anatomy.
METHODS: Fifteen male patients (mean age: 26.1 years) with C5-C6 avulsion injuries and concomitant shoulder fractures were treated between October 2019 and April 2022 using a modified posterior approach. The "teres major first" technique utilized the inferior border of the teres major muscle as a consistent landmark to identify and mobilize

BACKGROUND: Upper brachial plexus injuries often necessitate complex nerve transfers, which are traditionally performed under general anesthesia (GA). In patients with polytrauma or significant comorbidities, GA may present additional perioperative risks. The Wide Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet (WALANT) technique offers a potential alternative by enabling nerve transfers under local anesthesia with real-time patient feedback and without the need for sedation or airway management.
METHODS: We describe the application of the WALANT technique in a 15-year-old male patient with a C5-C6 brac

The use of Botulinum Neurotoxin A (BoNT/A) to treat peripheral neuropathic pain from nerve injury has garnered interest for its long-lasting effects and safety. This study examined the effects of IncobotulinumtoxinA (Inco/A), a BoNT/A variant without accessory proteins, on nerve regeneration in rats using the chronic constriction injury (CCI) model. Inco/A was administered perineurally at two time points: on days 0 and 21 post CCI. Functional and histological assessments were conducted to evaluate the effect of Inco/A on nerve regeneration. Sciatic Functional Index (SFI) measurements and Compo

BACKGROUND: It is expected that transfer of spinal accessory nerve to suprascapular nerve, which is widely used in the restoration of the shoulder function in brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI), impairs the trapezius function.
AIM: To hypothesize that the lower trapezius muscle remains functional after this neve transfer.
METHODS: In a retrospective cross-sectional study, patients with BPBI who underwent nerve transfer from accessory nerve to supraclavicular were followed for at least six months following the operation and demographic data were extracted from the database. To assess the low

BACKGROUND: Poor recovery of active glenohumeral external rotation (aGHER) after brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) is common. Late spinal accessory nerve-to-infraspinatus motor branch (SAN-IS) transfer has been reported as effective. The authors investigated its efficacy in children older than 4 years with BPBI.
METHODS: This case series involved children with no aGHER undergoing SAN-IS transfer. Indications included absent aGHER in shoulder abduction and a positive external rotation drop test. Subscapularis release was done for passive GHER less than 30 degrees in patients without glenohum

Objectives: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) frequently presents with cervical lymph node metastasis, even in small tumors, and lateral lymph node involvement serves as an important prognostic factor. Therapeutic lateral neck dissection is typically recommended when nodal metastasis is clinically evident, usually including levels II-V. However, the necessity of routine level II dissection in patients without clinical or radiologic evidence of level II involvement remains controversial, given its association with increased surgical morbidity, particularly injury to the spinal accessory nerve.

The profunda femoris artery (PFA) originates from the femoral artery, supplying crucial blood flow to thigh muscles, hip joint, and femur. We report a rare unilateral anatomical variation involving an accessory profunda femoris artery (APFA) originating 0.5 cm from the mid-inguinal point (MIP) and a main PFA arising 3.6 cm from the MIP. The APFA supplies the pectineus, adductor longus, and adductor magnus muscles, and gives off the superficial circumflex iliac artery. The main PFA gives rise to circumflex and perforating branches. This variation highlights the complexity of human anatomy and h
