Blast exposure can injure brain by multiple mechanisms, and injury attributable to direct effects of the blast wave itself have been difficult to distinguish from that caused by rapid head displacement and other secondary processes. To resolve this issue, we used a rat model of blast exposure in which head movement was either strictly prevented or permitted in the lateral plane. Blast was found to produce axonal injury even with strict prevention of head movement. This axonal injury was restricted to the cerebellum, with the exception of injury in visual tracts secondary to ocular trauma. The

Restoring shoulder abduction is one of the main priorities in the surgical treatment of brachial plexus injuries. Double nerve transfer to the axillary nerve and suprascapular nerve is widely used and considered the best option. The most common donor nerve for the suprascapular nerve is the spinal accessory nerve. However, donor nerves for axillary nerve reconstructions vary and it is still unclear which donor nerve has the best outcome. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review on reconstructions of suprascapular and axillary nerves and to perform a meta-analysis investigating

Sensorimotor transformation, a process that converts sensory stimuli into motor actions, is critical for the brain to initiate behaviors. Although the circuitry involved in sensorimotor transformation has been well delineated, the molecular logic behind this process remains poorly understood. Here, we performed high-throughput and circuit-specific single-cell transcriptomic analyses of neurons in the superior colliculus (SC), a midbrain structure implicated in early sensorimotor transformation. We found that SC neurons in distinct laminae expressed discrete marker genes. Of particular interest

OBJECTIVE: Facial nerve preservation is critical in vestibular schwannoma (VS) surgery. Direct electrical stimulation (DES) is a widely used method for intraoperative localization of the facial nerve and assessment of nerve integrity. We sought to assess the predictive ability of DES parameters on facial nerve function post-VS surgery.
DATABASES REVIEWED: A systematic literature search of English-language studies published from 1946 to 2019 was undertaken using EMBASE, MedLine/PubMed, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials.

Mammalian adult neurons of the central nervous system (CNS) display limited ability to regrow axons after trauma. The developmental decline in their regenerative ability has been attributed to both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including postnatal suppression of transcription factors and non-neuronal inhibitory components, respectively. The cell adhesion molecule Contactin 2 (CNTN2) is expressed in neurons and oligodendrocytes in the CNS. Neuronal CNTN2 is highly regulated during development and plays critical roles in axon growth and guidance and neuronal migration. On the other hand, CNTN

INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RION) is still a devastating complication of brain and skull base radiation that has no effective treatment up until today, thus uttermost caution must be taken in treating patients that brain radiotherapy is needed. We present two cases of RION that happened in seemingly safe radiation doses.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 48-year-old female with a history of pleomorphic pituitary adenoma developed bilateral and painless loss of vision 10 months after radiation to the brain; the total radiation dose was 45 Gy in 25 fractions and no other risk factors of

INTRODUCTION: The preservation of the spinal accessory nerve cannot be overlooked in neck dissection. Injury to the nerve results in shoulder dysfunction and other related morbidities. In this article, we describe a unique constant relationship between spinal accessory nerve and great auricular nerve, at the junction of the anterior and posterior triangles of the neck, eponymously labelled the X- pointer.
METHODOLOGY: This was an observational study conducted at a tertiary care cancer centre that runs a comprehensive surgical training program. A 100 cases of modified radical neck dissection p

BACKGROUND: Acrolein is a reactive aldehyde that forms during burning of wood and other fuels. It is also a product of lipid peroxidation (LPO) reactions and is present in cigarette smoke. Acrolein is known to cause oxidative stress and inflammatory nerve tissue damage. Lutein is a tetraterpenoid molecule with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. There appear to be no studies on the effect of lutein on vestibulocochlear nerve damage induced by acrolein. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of lutein on vestibulocochlear nerve damage induced by acrolein in rats using bio

SIRT1 prevents retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss in models of optic neuropathy following pharmacologic activation or genetic overexpression. The exact mechanism of loss is not known, prior evidence suggests this is through oxidative stress to either neighboring cells or RGC specifically. We investigated the neuroprotective potential of RGC-selective SIRT1 gene therapy in the optic nerve crush (ONC) model. We hypothesized that AAV-mediated overexpression of SIRT1 in RGCs reduces RGC loss, thereby preserving visual function. Cohorts of C57Bl/6J mice received intravitreal injection of experimental

Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) is a leading therapeutic candidate for several ocular diseases and induces optic nerve regeneration in animal models. Paradoxically, however, although CNTF gene therapy promotes extensive regeneration, recombinant CNTF (rCNTF) has little effect. Because intraocular viral vectors induce inflammation, and because CNTF is an immune modulator, we investigated whether CNTF gene therapy acts indirectly through other immune mediators. The beneficial effects of CNTF gene therapy remained unchanged after deleting CNTF receptor alpha (CNTFRα) in retinal ganglion cells

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine if different facial muscle groups demonstrate different responses to facial nerve stimulation, the results of which could potentially improve intraoperative facial nerve monitoring (IOFNM).
METHODS: IOFNM data were prospectively collected from patients undergoing cochlear implantation. At different stages of nerve exposure, three sites were stimulated using a monopolar pulse. Peak electromyography (EMG) amplitude (μV) in four muscle groups innervated by four different branches of the facial nerve (frontalis-temporal, inferior orbicularis oc

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) 'closed lock' is a clinical condition causing TMJ pain and limited mouth opening (painful locking). Recent studies suggest an increasing prevalence of degenerative joint disease associated with the onset of TMJ closed lock in adolescents and young adults. Early interventions are recommended, but the curative effect of standard therapies remains controversial. In this retrospective study, an alternative method of non-surgical treatment of TMJ closed lock is presented, and its long-term efficacy has been observed.
METHODS: Forty adolescents and young ad

Glaucoma is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disease, characterized by degeneration of the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). There has been little progress in developing efficient strategies for neuroprotection in glaucoma. We profiled the retina transcriptome of Lister Hooded rats at 2 weeks after optic nerve crush (ONC) and analyzed the data from the genomic fabric paradigm (GFP) to bring additional insights into the molecular mechanisms of the retinal remodeling after induction of RGC degeneration. GFP considers three independent characteristics for the expression of each gene: level, variab

OBJECTIVES: Previous spinal nerve injury studies have reported brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA upregulation in either the ipsilateral dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons or both the contralateral and ipsilateral DRG neurons from early period after peripheral nerve injury. This BDNF elevation induces hyperalgesia in the injured and/or uninjured sites, but this detailed mechanism remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the BDNF mRNA expression in bilateral DRG neurons caused by unilateral nerve injury and to explore the possible mechanisms by which nitric oxide (NO) mediate

This study was performed to investigate the effect of platelet-rich fibrin membrane (PRFM), alone and with topical tacrolimus application, on regeneration of the crushed facial nerve (FN). Thirty healthy 7-week-old albino rats were used. The left FN was damaged by crushing in all rats. Three random groups of rats were formed: group 1, untreated; group 2, treated with PRFM; group 3, treated with PRFM plus topical tacrolimus. Functional recovery and histological and immunohistochemical evaluations were performed 4 and 8 weeks later. Anti-S100 was used to detect myelin sheath. At 4 weeks, blinkin

Semaphorin3A is considered a classical repellent molecule for developing neurons and a potent inhibitor of regeneration after nervous system trauma. Vinaxanthone and other Sema3A inhibitors are currently being tested as possible therapeutics to promote nervous system regeneration from injury. Our previous study on Sema3A demonstrated a switch in Sema3A's function toward induction of nerve regeneration in adult murine corneas and in culture of adult peripheral neurons. The aim of the current study is to determine the direct effects of Vinaxanthone on the Sema3A induced adult neuronal growth. We
