Impact of buccal and marginal mandibular branch transection on neuromuscular junction integrity in a rodent model of facial nerve paralysis.

BACKGROUND: Facial nerve paralysis is a complex and devastating condition, with translational research primarily relying on animal models. Models include injuries to the main trunk or distal branches of the facial nerve, such as the buccal and marginal mandibular branches. While recovery is well described following main trunk injury, this study investigates the impact of distal branch injuries on facial nerve recovery and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) innervation. NEW METHOD: Adult rats underwent transection of the buccal branch (BB) or of the buccal and marginal mandibular branches (BB+MM) of

Case series of CT-fusion and real-time US-guidance in percutaneous RF thermocoagulation for trigeminal rhizotomy.

This case series evaluates the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of real-time computed tomography fusion with ultrasound guidance (CTF-USG) in percutaneous radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFT) for trigeminal rhizotomy. Traditional imaging modalities such as CT and fluoroscopy lack real-time visualization, increasing the risk of vascular injury and reducing procedural precision. The CTF-USG technique integrates CT imaging with real-time ultrasound via electromagnetic tracking, enabling accurate needle navigation and anatomical confirmation. Six patients with refractory trigeminal neuralgia af

CT-guided paramaxillary glossopharyngeal nerve block: A novel and potentially safer approach for diagnostic confirmation and temporary treatment of glossopharyngeal neuralgia.

The glossopharyngeal nerve block is an interventional technique utilized for head and neck pain management in the setting of glossopharyngeal neuralgia, dental procedures, awake endotracheal intubations, and post-pharyngeal surgery. This procedure is traditionally performed with landmark technique or ultrasound-guided techniques, all of which are associated with potential risks and complications for the patient. We report the novel technique of a CT-guided paramaxillary approach glossopharyngeal nerve block, which has not been previously reported, eliminates the trans-parotid trajectory, and r

Microstructural injury to the optic nerve with vigabatrin treatment in West syndrome: A DTI study.

To evaluate optic nerve injury associated with vigabatrin treatment in children with West syndrome using diffusion tensor imaging. Thirty-five children with West syndrome (aged 9 days-22 months) were retrospectively analyzed and grouped as follows: (1) vigabatrin with symmetrical thalamic abnormalities, (2) vigabatrin without thalamic abnormalities, and (3) controls on other anti-seizure medications. Fractional anisotropy and apparent diffusion coefficient values of the optic nerves were assessed. ROC curves were used to determine fractional anisotropy thresholds for optic nerve injury. fracti

Transconjunctival Approach for Injection into the Rat Optic Nerve.

The rat serves as an important model for studying disorders of the optic nerve, including heritable, traumatic, neoplastic, and autoimmune conditions. Accessing the rat optic nerve for experimental manipulations and injections is challenging due to the small size of the orbit and the vascularity of the surrounding orbital tissues. Previous techniques have involved a cutaneous incision, which carries a higher risk of infection and requires wound closure. This study aims to describe a unique, less invasive, and potentially more efficient approach to accessing the rat optic nerve. A transconjunct

Effectiveness of concentrated growth factor and laser therapy on wound healing, inferior alveolar nerve injury and periodontal bone defects post-mandibular impacted wisdom tooth extraction: A randomized clinical trial.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The extraction of wisdom teeth with mandibular impact frequently results in complications including damage to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and malformations of the bone. The objective of this research endeavour was to assess the efficacy of low-level laser therapy and concentrated growth factor (CGF) in facilitating nerve recovery and wound healing in such instances. A total of thirty-one patients (mean age 27.52 ± 5.79 years) who presented with IAN injury after extraction were randomly assigned to one of three groups: control group (which received oral mecobalamin), CGF group (which rece

A multichannel electromyography dataset for continuous intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring of cranial nerve.

Continuous Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring (cIONM) is a widely used technology to improve surgical outcomes and prevent cranial nerve injury during skull base surgery. Monitoring of free-running electromyogram (EMG) plays an important role in cIONM, which can be used to identify different discharge patterns, alert the surgeon to potential nerve damage promptly, etc. In this dataset, we collected clinical multichannel EMG signals from 11 independent patients' data using a Neuromaster G1 MEE-2000 system (Nihon Kohden, Inc., Tokyo, Japan). Through innovative classification methods, the

Anisocoria After Direct Light Stimulus is Associated with Poor Outcomes Following Acute Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Assessing pupil size and reactivity is the standard of care in neurocritically ill patients. Anisocoria observed in critically ill patients often prompts further investigation and treatment. This study explores anisocoria at rest and after light stimulus determined using quantitative pupillometry as a predictor of discharge modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores. METHODS: This analysis includes data from an international registry and includes patients with paired (left and right eye) quantitative pupillometry readings linked to discharge mRS scores. Anisocoria was defined as the absol

The Outcome of Spinal Accessory Nerve Transfer to the Musculocutaneous Nerve in Birth Brachial Plexus Palsy.

PURPOSE: Patients with brachial plexus birth injury with limited intraplexal donors require the use of extraplexal donors. Concern regarding the potential for respiratory problems resulting from the harvest of intercostal nerves or the phrenic nerve suggests the need for other options. Transfer of the spinal accessory nerve (SAN) is one option for restoring elbow flexion in adult patients; however, there are few reports of the results of this transfer in brachial plexus birth injury. This study aimed to report the result of SAN transfer to the musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) in brachial plexus bi

Prevalence of Anterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery Vascular Loop in Cerebellopontine Angle With Three-Dimensional Constructive Interference in Steady State (CISS) Sequence MRI.

Background The cerebellopontine angle (CPA) cistern houses vital neurovascular structures such as cranial nerves V, VII, and VIII and the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA), often leading to neurovascular compression syndromes due to its complex anatomy. Although vascular compression is a recognized cause of certain neuralgias, its association with otologic symptoms such as tinnitus, hearing loss, and dizziness remains uncertain. Hence, this study aims to determine the prevalence of the AICA vascular loop in the CPA cistern on MRI in patients with asymptomatic audiovestibular symptoms.

Anatomical variations of the marginal mandibular nerve.

INTRODUCTION: The Marginal Mandibular Nerve (MMN), despite being didactically described as being a unique branch of the other branches of the Facial Nerve, has in practice an abundant anatomical variation. Both in relation to its ramifications and the positioning of these in relation to the lower edge of the mandible, as well as its anastomoses along its path, play a fundamental role in the surgical strategy during the approach of this cervicofacial site, and can generate, as underestimated its characteristics, inadvertent injuries and motor consequences to the patient. OBJECTIVE: To analyze

Unveiling the vulnerability of the human abducens nerve: insights from comparative cranial base anatomy in mammals and primates.

The topographic anatomy of the abducens nerve has been the subject of research for more than 150 years. Although its vulnerability was initially attributed to its length, this hypothesis has largely lost prominence. Instead, attention has shifted toward its intricate anatomical relations along the cranial base. Contrary to the extensive anatomical and neurosurgical literature on abducens nerve anatomy in humans, its complex anatomy in other species has received less emphasis. The main question addressed here is why the human abducens nerve is predisposed to injury. Specifically, we aim to perf

Trigeminal Nerve Schwannoma: A Rare Case of Multisymptomatic Cranial Nerve Involvement.

Schwannomas (SCs) are benign tumors composed of neoplastic Schwann cells and are relatively uncommon intracranially. Although these tumors are frequently associated with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), they may also arise idiopathically, and their pathogenesis remains poorly understood. A 70-year-old Caucasian man presented with a two-month history of vertigo, gait imbalance, and decreased visual acuity in the left eye accompanied by photophobia, nausea, vomiting, and occasional headaches. On physical examination, he exhibited hyposmia, horizontal nystagmus, superior oblique palsy, decreased p
