Receptive field sizes and responsiveness to light in area 18 of the adult cat after chiasmotomy. Postoperative evolution; role of visual experience.

Receptive field sizes to stimulation of the ipsilateral temporal retina were studied in area 18 of adult cats at different times after complete midsagittal section of the optic chiasm. A specific postoperative evolution could thus be noticed: immediately after section, the average area of the receptive fields was reduced, as compared to control preparations, owing to the disappearance of large fields located at more than 20 degrees of eccentricity. A progressive reappearance of these large fields occurred between 8 and 45 days after chiasmotomy, provided that the animal was placed in normal vi

Gastric response to severe head injury.

We studied the gastric response to severe head injury and multiple trauma in 53 patients admitted to the surgical intensive care unit at the University of Louisville. Twenty-two of the 32 patients with severe head injury could have endoscopy. Each patient had gastritis or duodenitis. Patients with severe head injury had a slightly higher rate of gastric acid secretion than did the other trauma patients without severe head injury, but the difference was not significant. Serum gastrin levels were normal in both groups and did not correlate with intracranial pressure. Pancreatic polypeptide level

Injection injuries of the recurrent laryngeal nerve.

We describe a new etiology for vocal cord paralysis. Two patients, chronic drug abusers, had in time lost access to the usual peripheral veins, and proceeded then to have the drugs injected repeatedly into the jugular veins in the neck. Both presented with persistent hoarseness and were found to have a unilateral vocal cord paralysis. Neck exploration was undertaken to evaluate this pathology, to rule out other obscure disease, and to decompress the recurrent laryngeal nerve within the carotid sheaths. Severe fibrosis was encountered in the neck of one patient and mild fibrosis in the other. A

Evulsion of the optic nerve: a clinicopathological study.

Four patients with evulsion of the optic nerve caused by blunt trauma were clinically evaluated. The evulsion was complete in two of the patients and incomplete in the other two. The patients' visual acuity ranged from counting fingers to no light perception. In addition, two eyes were histopathologically studied. Several explanations of the exact cause and the extent of the evulsion are advanced within this report.

Facial nerve anastomosis in the cerebellopontine angle: a review of 24 cases.

Facial nerve repair during translabyrinthine tumor surgery was performed in twenty-four patients. Nineteen patients (79 percent) had return of facial function. Different techniques of facial nerve anastomosis were evaluated. Suture anastomosis was more reliable than other anastomotic methods, especially if cable nerve grafts were used. Facial function began to return within twelve months in all patients whose function returned.

[Initial results in percutaneous radiotherapy of malignant melanomas of the choroid with the linear accelerator].

Twenty-seven eyes harboring a choroidal melanoma which could not be treated by other methods were treated with external beam radiation using a linear accelerator. After a mean follow-up period of 15.6 months 3 eyes had to be enucleated. In two eyes fresh tumors developed, which were successfully treated with local beta-radiation. In the remaining 22 eyes the tumor growth was stopped or the tumor regressed. External beam therapy for choroidal melanomas seems to be an effective alternative to enucleation in eyes with tumors not accessible for other methods of treatment and which cannot be enucle

Neurinoma of the spinal accessory nerve. A case report.

A case of neurinoma of the spinal accessory nerve without evidence of von Recklinghausen's disease is described. The difference in the clinical symptoms and radiological findings between this tumour and a jugular foramen neurinoma is especially emphasized. Other cases in the world literature are also reviewed and the peculiarities of the tumour are discussed.

Influence of vagotomy on mucosal protection against alcohol-induced gastric damage in the rat.

We examined the role of the vagus nerve in mediating the protective effects of subcutaneous 16,16-dimethyl prostaglandin E2 (16,16-dmPGE2) or of the mild irritant 30% ethanol (topically) against gastric mucosal injury induced by concentrated solutions of ethanol. Anesthetized rats underwent either truncal vagotomy or sham truncal vagotomy and were studied acutely or 7 days later. Under acute conditions, in rats with intact vagi, oral saline followed by 100% ethanol produced severe gastric hemorrhagic and necrotic lesions throughout the glandular gastric mucosa. Oral 30% ethanol or pretreatment

Target dependent and independent stages in regeneration.

Goldfish retinae deprived of their target by tectal ablation showed characteristics of regeneration, such as sprouting activity in culture and changes in protein synthesis. These features resemble changes occurring in regenerating retinae of optic nerves which were subjected only to crush injury. Retinae of tectal ablated nerves maintained their ability to sprout in culture longer than retinae of crushed-injured optic nerves. This may indicate a possible absence of the machinery which regulates growth termination as reflected in this case, by the enduring growth activity in culture. Among the

Optic axons ignore denervated foreign territory in goldfish tectum.

Ultrastructural morphometry was used to test firstly, whether regenerating optic axons in goldfish tectum will form connections in adjacent denervated foreign territory and secondly, whether intact optic axons will collaterally sprout to innervate this territory. The stratum fibrosum marginale of the tectum was partially denervated by removing the torus longitudinalis and cutting the tectal commissure. Optic axons do not normally synapse in this layer. Thirty days after partial denervation and optic tract section the numbers of normal synapses in a micron 2 column through the stratum fibrosum

Congenital trigeminal anaesthesia. A review and classification.

Forty-three patients with the syndrome of congenital trigeminal anaesthesia (CTA) have been reported to date. The cases have been divided into three groups based on the presence and nature of any associated clinical problems. Three additional cases are presented as characteristic of each of the groups. A different aetiology is proposed for each group. Group I consists of patients with CTA as an isolated finding. It is almost always bilateral, and typically involves the distribution of only the first division of the fifth nerve. There is no evidence of other neurological abnormalities or associ

Acoustic injury and the physiology of hearing.

A critical bibliography of published articles concerning the effects of noise exposure on hearing has been compiled for the NIH. The review concentrated on articles published over the last 14 years; however, historical highlights of the past 50 years or so were included for continuity. This paper attempts to summarize in tutorial fashion the results of that review with regard to auditory physiology in general and explores some of the current issues with specific reference to acoustic injury. To date, most of the effort toward understanding acoustic injury has been focused on the auditory perip

Effects of neonatal transection on glial cell development in the rat optic nerve: evidence that the oligodendrocyte-type 2 astrocyte cell lineage depends on axons for its survival.

We have previously provided evidence that the rat optic nerve contains three types of macroglial cells that develop as two distinct lineages: one lineage comprises type 1 astrocytes, which develop before birth, while the other comprises oligodendrocytes and type 2 astrocytes, which develop after birth from a common, bipotential glial progenitor cell. In the present study we have examined the influence of axons on the development of these two glial cell lineages by cutting the optic nerve at birth so that the retinal ganglion cell axons in the nerve degenerate. Using antibodies to distinguish t

The injury response of nerve fibres in the anterior medullary velum of the adult rat.

The injury response of myelinated central nervous system (CNS) axons was documented in the anterior medullary velum (AMV) of the adult rat. Study of silver-stained AMV whole-mounts revealed sprouting of injured axons as early as 14 h post-lesion (hpl), with a complex network of fibres formed by 48 hpl. Signs of fibre degeneration were also apparent from 48 hpl, increasing in extent until 15 days post-lesion (dpl). Fragmentation was largely confined to specific fibre bundles, constituted by the distal portions of severed axons. Although some degeneration of regenerated axons was evident from 15

Slow flow in regenerating C-fibers.

An identical rate of slow flow was measured in 3 different populations of regenerating C-fibers which have very different growth abilities as expressed by a 6-fold difference in their elongation velocities. At 21 degrees C, this rate of slow flow is 3.5 times faster than the rate measured in intact nerves and is identical to the elongation velocity of the most rapidly regenerating fibers. Slow flow may constitute the upper limit of the elongation velocity of a regenerating axon but other factors determined by the perikaryon (such as protein synthesis) might prevent the neuron from reaching the

Saccadic velocity measurements in strabismus.

Traditional evaluation of strabismus has included cover test measurements, evaluation of the range of ocular rotations, and an array of subjective sensory tests. These studies could not always differentiate paresis of an extraocular muscle from restrictions and from various neuro-ophthalmic motility disorders. The measurement of horizontal and vertical saccadic movements can provide an objective test of rectus muscle function. Using EOG, saccades can be recorded easily, inexpensively, and repeatably at any age. In ocular muscle paresis or paralysis, saccadic speed is reduced mildly to markedly

[Various anatomic and clinical features of traumatic lesions of the spinal cord].

Results of a pathomorphological, experimental and clinical study designed to ascertain morphological changes associated with impairment of vital visceral functions following spinal cord trauma are presented. Clinical manifestations of such disorders were studied in 127 patients with complicated vertebral fractures. Further investigations involved postmortem examination of the brain of four patients with complete anatomical rupture of the spinal cord at the level of CV, CVI, and LI segments as well as the brain of 18 mature cats with various types of spinal cord resection which were treated by

Proximodistal degeneration of C-fibers detached from their perikarya.

Degeneration was followed in the garfish olfactory nerve after removal of the mucosa containing the cell bodies. Degeneration, as measured by a decrease in the weight of consecutive 3-mm nerve segments, spreads at constant velocity from the site of injury toward the synaptic area. The proximodistal degeneration is temperature dependent and progresses from 0.3 mm/d at 10 degrees C to 13.0 mm/d at 35 degrees C. Between 14 and 35 degrees C, the velocity increases linearly with temperature. At all the temperatures investigated, these proximodistal degeneration velocities are identical to the rates

Muscle transposition in the rehabilitation of the paralyzed larynx.

Muscle transposition of the innervated omohyoid muscle into the tendon of the paralyzed posterior cricoarytenoid muscle was studied in a small series of subhuman primates. A similar procedure was described previously by King for treatment of bilateral recurrent nerve injuries. Our studies confirm that this procedure adequately enlarges the airway to allow normal activity without a tracheostomy. Histologic studies appear to show nerve ingrowth occurring at 6 months as in other neuromuscular pedicle procedures. The procedure is easily performed and causes no other muscle denervation.

Regeneration of three populations of olfactory axons as a function of temperature.

Following injury near the mucosa, 3 populations of regenerating axons have been shown to invade successively the olfactory nerve. At 21 degrees C, each of the first 2 phases (I and II) represents 3-5% of the original axonal population. Phase III corresponds to the massive arrival of new axons and contains 50-70% of an intact nerve axonal population. The influence of temperature on the elongation rates of these 3 phases of growing fibers has been followed from 10 to 35 degrees C. No regeneration occurs at 10 degrees C. Between 14 and 31 degrees C the elongation velocity of the most rapidly grow
