Previous experiments have shown that nerve growth factor (NGF) enhances regeneration of goldfish optic nerve after local application of NGF at the site of the lesion. However, the site and mechanism of action of NGF are not yet known. Cytofluorometric quantification of the accumulation of somatopetally transported fluoroisothiocyanate (FITC)-labelled wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) and Concanavalin A (Con A) were performed on sections of the mouse facial nucleus. Bilateral disruption, or one-sided transection of the basal optic root with a partial injury of this tract of retinal fibres on the other side, abolished vertical, but spared horizontal optokinetic head-nystagmus. Horizontal nystagmus could not be evoked when the ventral part of the pretectum was injured and the basal optic root was transected on the same side. The lesions were checked by the cobalt-filling technique. It is concluded that the basal optic nucleus mediates stimuli which evoke vertical optokinetic head-nystagmus in frogs.

Nineteen patients who undergo facial nerve reconstruction after the operation of cerebellopontine angle tumor from 1964 to 1981 were investigated. Accessory nerve palsy due to surgery in the anterior triangle of the neck is uncommon. Two such cases 1, after a carotid endarterectomy and the other after rhytidectomy, are described here. Both cases were treated with analgesics and physical therapy. Followup evaluation after 1 year revealed complete clinical and electrophysiologic recovery in only the first case. Recognizing accessory nerve palsy after surgical procedures in the necks is emphasized as important for proper management. An attempt is made to explain the reason for lack of improvement in the second case.
