Síndrome de Rapunzel asociado a obstrucción intestinal y hemorragia de vías digestivas altas: reporte de caso y revisión de literatura.

Rapunzel syndrome is an unusual and rare disease that occurs in young people, caused by intragastric accumulation of ingested hair (gastric trichobezoar) that keeps stuck in the gastric lumen and extends to the small intestine, associated with trichophagia. We report the case of a 25-year-old female patient with a history of trichophagia who is admitted in our institution with abdominal pain, distention, nausea, weight loss and concomitant upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Preoperative diagnosis was made by prior abdominal computed tomography scan with duodenal extension. Success surgical lapar

A case of death of purulent meningitis caused by transorbital intracranial penetrating injury due to long-term residual bamboo chopstick.

This article reports a case of death caused by purulent meningitis after a long-term transorbital intracranial penetrating injury induced by a bamboo chopstick. A 53-year-old man was pierced with a bamboo chopstick into the left orbit, and the bamboo chopstick broke off. The man remained conscious after the injury but developed paroxysmal headaches. Multiple computed tomography, computed tomography angiography, and rhinoscopy detections revealed that a puncture tract had formed from the left orbit to the right edge of the brainstem through the skull base. However, there was no apparent brain i

Esophageal emergencies.

The esophagus is a deeply located organ which traverses the neck, the thorax, and the abdomen and is surrounded at each level by vital organs. Because of its positioning injuries to the esophagus are rare. Their common denominator is the risk of the organ perforation leading to spillage of digestive contents in surrounding spaces, severe sepsis and eventually death. Most frequent esophageal emergencies are related to the ingestion of foreign bodies or caustic agents, to iatrogenic or spontaneous esophageal perforation and external esophageal trauma. Early diagnosis and appropriate management a

Comparison of fatal traumatic medico-legal cases with postmortem computed tomography and autopsy: A pilot study in Taiwan.

In order to determine the performance of postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) in identifying traumatic-relevant macroscopic findings in medico-legal cases, this retrospective observational pilot study involving nine trauma casualties who had received PMCT prior to autopsy. The comparison of these findings in six anatomical regions as dictated in Injury Severity Score (ISS) were performed. 104 traumatic-relevant findings were identified with achievement of 51% congruent findings. PMCT and autopsy had additionally found 22 and 29 findings respectively. PMCT had highest sensitivity for extremity

<Editors' Choice> Surgical removal of an intracranially migrated acupuncture needle: a case report and literature review.

Acupuncture is a popular alternative therapy worldwide and is generally safe. However, serious acupuncture-related complications can occur. Intracranial complications caused by a migrated acupuncture needle are extremely rare. Herein we report a surgical case of intracranial acupuncture needle migration and discuss the key technical aspects of the procedure. We additionally performed a review of the relevant literature. A 55-year-old woman presented with migration of a broken acupuncture needle via the posterior cervical skin. Computed tomography (CT) showed that the needle migrated intra- and

Vesicovaginal fistula with bladder and vaginal stone.

INTRODUCTION: In developing countries, Vesico-vaginal fistula (VVF) results following obstetric trauma or iatrogenic during hysterectomy. Large calculus associated with VVF is relatively rare, with the risk factor are presence of foreign body, urinary tract infection, and prolonged duration of disease. Most bladder stones can be found among patients who are bedridden, indwelling urethral catheter, bladder outlet obstruction, infection, and other similar characteristic. We report a case of VVF with bladder and vaginal stone in 37 years old woman and reviews the evaluation and treatment and high

Large Vesicovaginal Fistula After Vaginal Insertion of a Plastic Cap Healed with Two Weeks of Catheterization: A Case Report.

Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) in developing countries is mainly associated with obstructed labor, iatrogenic injury during cesarean delivery, and hysterectomy. However, formation of VVF after foreign body insertion into the vagina is an extremely rare phenomenon. We report on an 18-year-old girl from rural northwest Ethiopia who presented with continuous leakage of urine for 2 months. She had inserted a plastic cap into her vagina 2 years prior for an unrevealed reason. A foreign body was found in her vagina, resulting in a large VVF. Removal of the foreign body was made under spinal anesthesia.

[Endoscopic removal of intrauterine device perforating the sigmoid colon: case report].

Intrauterine device (IUD) is the mainstay of family planning methods in developing countries. However, it is associated with severe complications such as bleeding, perforation and migration to adjacent organs. Although perforation of the uterus is not rare, migration to the sigmoid colon is exceptional. We here report a case of IUD migration into sigmoid colon; this was removed via low endoscopy. The study involved a 45-year-old woman using an IUD who presented with pelvic pain associated with a feeling of pelvic heaviness 6 years later of insertion. Clinical examination was without abnormalit

A Severe Case of Siliconoma-induced Hypercalcemia due to Illicit Gluteal Silicone Injections.

Siliconoma-induced hypercalcemia is a rare complication of siliconoma, occurring secondary to a foreign body granulomatous process induced by the introduction of silicone into soft tissue. This is a case report of a woman presenting with sequelae of illicit silicone injections performed in an unknown woman's basement in Florida 20 years before presentation. A 39-year-old woman presented with a 2-month history of 20-pound weight loss, malaise, and intractable vomiting with a remote history of unregulated cosmetic injections to the bilateral gluteal and thigh regions. Her laboratory studies were

A straw entering the abdominal cavity through the female reproductive tract: a case report.

In this article, an unusual case of a 27-year-old woman, who presented with abdominal pain for the previous 2 days, is presented. Ultrasonography revealed a perforated uterus and a straw in the abdominal cavity. A foreign body in the abdominal cavity was diagnosed and removed by laparoscopic surgery, and antibiotics were administered. The patient reported no discomfort during follow-up for 1 month. This report highlights the rare case of a foreign body crossing the uterus into the abdominal cavity. The only possible action was immediate surgery to remove the foreign body from the abdominal cav

Osseous Metaplasia of the Endometrium and Successful Hysteroscopic Resection: A Video Case and Review of the Literature.

Osseous metaplasia of the endometrium is defined by the presence of mature or immature bone tissue in the endometrium. Most of the cases are associated with secondary infertility after abortion, chronic endometritis, or the presence of foreign bodies in the endometrium. Some cases are asymptomatic; others have menstrual abnormalities such as menorrhagia or oligomenorrhea. Osseous metaplasia is mostly seen after recurrent abortions. Removing the bone tissue helps spontaneous conception. Intrauterine hyperechogenic lesion, suggesting calcification in transvaginal ultrasonography, creates suspici

Gross Hematuria Caused by Intravesical Migration of a Forgotten Intrauterine Device: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Intrauterine device (IUD) is the second most widely used method of contraception worldwide. Up to 14% women prefer IUD for its attractive advantages such as cost effectiveness, high efficiency, and low complication rate. Despite these advantages, however, some complications may occur. One of these complications is uterine perforation and migration of the device to involve adjacent viscera such as peritoneum, bowel, vessels, and rarely bladder. IUD migration into the urinary bladder is uncommon, and only 70 cases are reported in the literature. Recurrent urinary tract infection and bladder calc

A childhood blast victim presenting with bladder stone in adulthood-A rare case report of retained blast fragment with secondary stone.

Secondary bladder stones in young adults are usually a result of bladder outlet obstruction secondary to urethral stricture disease or neurogenic bladder. Foreign body inside bladder is a perfect nidus for the development of secondary bladder stone. We report a rare case of bladder stone in a young adult developing on the retained blast fragment inside bladder.

Bacterial composition and colony structure of the lower respiratory tract in infants and children with recurrent wheezing: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The bacterial load of the human lower respiratory tract is at least several times lower than that of the other parts of the body. This study aimed to identify the bacterial composition and colony structure of the lower respiratory tract in infants and children with recurrent wheezing compared with those of children with a bronchial foreign body and clarify whether the length of wheezing in infants can contribute to differences in the lower respiratory tract's bacterial colony structure. METHODS: We collected specimens of alveolar lavage fluid from 48 infants and children who under

Vaginal Foreign Body Forgotten for 20 Years in a Postmenopausal Female: A Case Report.

Here, we present a case of a 70-year-old female, menopausal for 20 years, who came to our outpatient department with complaints of recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI) and foul-smelling vaginal discharge. She also had occasional abdominal pain and experienced social stigma due to the foul smell. No history of fever or bleeding per vaginum and no obvious vulval/cervicovaginal growth or uterovaginal prolapse was found. Per speculum and per vaginal examinations were carried out. On examination, a foreign body of approximately 10 × 10 cm was found free in the atrophic vaginal canal. She gave a

Assessment of Commercial Off-the-Shelf Tissue Adhesives for Sealing Military-Relevant Corneal Perforation Injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Open-globe ocular injuries have increased in frequency in recent combat operations due to increased use of explosive weaponry. Unfortunately, open-globe injuries have one of the worst visual outcomes for the injured warfighter, often resulting in permanent loss of vision. To improve visual recovery, injuries need to be stabilized quickly following trauma, in order to restore intraocular pressure and create a watertight seal. Here, we assess four off-the-shelf (OTS), commercially available tissue adhesives for their ability to seal military-relevant corneal perforation injuries (C
