PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term clinical efficacy of ultrasound cyclo-plasty (UCP) in the treatment of moderate glaucoma and molecular effects in animal experiments.
METHODS: An 18-month clinical study was conducted among 32 patients with moderate glaucoma. The primary outcome was surgical success, defined as a reduction in intraocular pressure (IOP) of greater than or equal to 20% from the baseline and an IOP value of greater than 5 mmHg at the last follow-up. The secondary outcomes were related to the quality of life, complications, and mean IOP value at each follow-up. In the animal exp

Endogenous endophthalmitis (EE) is a rare infectious disease of the intraocular tissues with a major risk of significant visual loss. We describe a case of a female patient who presented with altered mental status and vision loss. The patient was found to have bacteraemia, meningitis and bilateral EE caused by Streptococcus dysgalactiae spp equisimilis The patient was clinically stabilised but continued to demonstrate profound visual loss at 5-month follow-up. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of this organism causing meningitis complicated by EE. Furthermore, this infection may

AIM: We report a case of successful intraocular pressure (IOP) management in a patient with refractory primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) following implantation of XEN gel implant in the same hemisphere as prior failed filtering surgeries [i.e., Baerveldt glaucoma implant (BGI) and trabeculectomy bleb)].
BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a major cause of blindness worldwide and is typically associated with elevated IOP and retinal ganglion cell loss. Treatment centers around decreasing IOP with eye drops and surgical interventions. The advent of minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) has expanded

Other than gunshot injuries, sacral penetrating injuries with a foreign body exiting to the other side are extremely rare. We encountered a case of sacral injury in which a long metallic pipe penetrated from the anus into the lower back of a patient. Since the pelvis contains various organs, management of a penetrating injury requires multidisciplinary treatment involving several medical specialties. Due to the infrequency of this type of injury, there are no definitive guidelines for effective management. We described our experience surgically treating a sacral penetrating injury and conducte

A complication of Kirschner (K) wire fixation is the migration of the wire. We report a patient who had undergone fixation of a right clavicle fracture associated with acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) dislocation 15 years ago. He presented with features of pain and dysaesthesia in the right ulnar nerve dermatome on the movement of the neck and shoulder. Radiographic investigations showed a broken K-wire that had migrated to the lower brachial plexus. He underwent surgical removal of the K-wire and recovered uneventfully. We summarise the literature on K-wire migration reported following clavicle

The human lens is an extraordinary tissue. It has no innervation or blood supply and receives the key building blocks of life from the aqueous and vitreous humours that bathe it. The primary objectives of the lens are to remain transparent and refract light in order to focus light on the retina. These are achieved through exquisite cell organisation and order. However, in time this order can be disrupted and visual quality can deteriorate through the formation of cataract (a clouding of the lens). At present there is no cure for cataract with surgery the only means of resolution. This procedur

We report the rare case of a patient who had a foreign body in the mediastinum and trachea caused by trauma due to epileptic seizures. A 52-year-old man had an epileptic seizure 3 months before visiting our hospital and had an injury to his neck caused by a broken glass cabinet. Computed tomography scan revealed a foreign body in the mediastinum and trachea. After a detailed discussion among members of the multidisciplinary team, surgery was successfully performed to remove the foreign body. This rare case may help provide a reference for diagnosing and treating a mediastinal and tracheobronch

We report a case of a tracheal foreign body caused by a sewing needle. After about four months, the patient showed delayed dry cough and hemoptysis. The sewing needle that pierced the tracheal wall damaged the aorta, and we performed endovascular stenting to prevent arterial bleeding and removed it under a bronchoscope. The patient smoothly recovered after the operation. This case proves that treatment strategies for patients with foreign bodies in the trachea can be individualized.

BACKGROUND: Foreign body aspiration from tracheostomy is very rare, and materials related to tracheostomy are usually aspirated. This condition, which can lead to serious complications, can be treated using bronchoscopic procedures. In this study, we aimed to present our clinical experience in foreign body aspiration via tracheostomy.
METHODS: Data from 26 patients who presented to our hospital for foreign body aspiration via tracheostomy from 2006 to 2020 were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTS: Foreign bodies were removed by fiber optic bronchoscopy in 15 (57.7%) cases, by rigid bronchoscop

BACKGROUND Pneumatic nail guns were first introduced in the 1950's, which revolutionized the construction industry. Since that time, nail gun injuries have been reported predominantly in the extremities with rare cases of thoracic and head injuries. A nail gun can easily propel nails through human tissue with velocities varying based on propellant and object. There are limited case reports on the appropriate management of thoracic nail gun injuries. CASE REPORT A 30-year-old man presented to the Emergency Department with right-sided chest pain seven and a half hours after getting struck in the

Foreign body aspiration is most common in infants of <3 years of age and the elderly. Peanuts and plant seeds account for approximately 70~80% of airway foreign bodies in children, while dental materials( e.g., dentures and crowns) are common in adults. Tracheobronchial foreign bodies are diagnosed by detailed history taking, careful auscultation, chest radiography, and computed tomography (CT). Chest radiography should be performed in frontal and lateral views. CT is useful for assessing the presence of a foreign body, the site of involvement, and secondary changes (e.g., pneumonia or atelect

PURPOSE: Loss-of-function variants in the ANGPTL7 gene are associated with protection from glaucoma and reduced intraocular pressure (IOP). We investigated the role of ANGPTL7 in IOP homeostasis and its potential as a target for glaucoma therapeutics.
METHODS: IOP, outflow facility, and outflow tissue morphology of Angptl7 knockout (KO) mice were assessed with and without dexamethasone (Dex). ANGPTL7 was quantified in conditioned media from human trabecular meshwork cells in response to Dex, in effluent from perfused human donor eyes, and in aqueous humor from human patients treated with ster

PURPOSE: To review ophthalmic trauma malpractice claims in the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (OMIC) database to determine the frequency and causes of litigation.
METHODS: A retrospective case series analysis of ophthalmic trauma claims from 2009 to 2019 was completed. Cases were selected only if the injury was secondary to trauma (e.g., fall, gunshot wound, paintball injury, etc.); iatrogenic traumatic surgical injuries were excluded.
RESULTS: 31 closed cases associated with 40 total claims related to ophthalmic trauma out of 2565 claims (1.56%) in the OMIC database were analysed. 13 o

BACKGROUND: Fishhook injuries are an uncommon trauma, and removing a penetrating fishhook is a complicated maneuver, especially if the wound involves delicate anatomical structures like the ocular region.
DISCUSSION: Several techniques that have been discussed in literature are reviewed and the authors present a novel approach that has been successfully performed on a patient with a fishhook penetrating his upper eyelid after a fishing accident.
CONCLUSION: Emergency physicians should be aware of all the possible approaches to fishhook penetrating injuries. If the fishhook does not involve t

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a real-time three-dimensional tomography optical imaging technology that uses near-infrared waves to take cross-sectional pictures of the retina and other tissues. A few studies have reported the use of intraoperative OCT navigation for the removal of foreign bodies from the eyeball during surgery. The objective is to present a single case with a small foreign body (not embedded in the retina) treated with intraoperative OCT guided 25G micro-amount trajectory vitrectomy.
