Ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery2025eng
A 2-year-old girl initially presented with an enlarging and fluctuating mass resembling a bruise several months after orbital trauma. CT imaging showed soft tissue contusion and possible hematoma, without cystic characteristics. Surgical excision was conducted and immunohistochemistry staining revealed CD34+ endothelium. The clinical and histopathologic findings were consistent with an orbital varix. To date, there are no published cases of posttraumatic extraconal orbital varix formation in the pediatric population.

Sports are a common cause of ocular trauma. Vitreoretinal injuries secondary to sports ball trauma can cause permanent vision loss and may be a source of significant morbidity. Trauma most frequently occurs in young males and over half of injuries involve the posterior segment. Injuries typically occur as a result of direct contact with the globe either before or after initial contact with the orbit and are dependent on the size, mass, and velocity of the ball. Compressive forces and subsequent equatorial expansion lead to direct tissue damage and dehiscence of posterior segment layers. Smalle

Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) causes vision loss through compression and contusion, yet there is no consensus on the most effective treatment. Polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)-derived bioactive lipids metabolized by lipoxygenase (LOX), cytochrome P450 (CYP), and cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes are known mediators of inflammation and neurodegeneration. However, their role in TON-related retinal pathology remains unclear. Controlled orbital impact (COI) was used to induce unilateral TON in mice with controlled velocity (2-3 m/s), with the fellow eye serving as an internal control. Retina tissue

Ocular traumas include a wide range of injuries from trivial conditions to extensive perforating injuries that can lead to visual function impairment of various ranges and even to the loss of the eye itself. In terms of first aid, not only an ophthalmologist but also a physician of any specialty can effectively intervene and minimize the consequences of these conditions. Open globe injuries represent prognostically the most severe conditions which have to be treated by an experienced ophthalmologist. Closed injuries are most commonly manifested as corneal erosions, foreign bodies on the surfac

BACKGROUND: Eye injuries range from minor to severe and may lead to permanent visual impairment. There is still little in the way of epidemiological data on eye injuries in Germany.
AIM: The aim of this study was to obtain an objective record of minor and severe eye injuries in Germany by evaluating hospital quality reports. We also investigated the relevance of injuries from fireworks in relation to the total number of eye injuries and the general population.
METHODS: This retrospective routine data study entailed analysing hospital quality reports from 2008 to 2022 in XML format. The R pro

Orbital fractures may be accompanied with severe damage of the eye bulb and other intraorbital tissues. Early clinical findings can be very mild, therefore it is vital to actively seek not only for any damage done to the soft tissues of the orbit, but also for extraorbital complications such as liquorrhea or meningitis. We report a relatively rare case of blow-in fracture of orbital roof in eleven years old boy. Patient was admitted to the emergency care after falling off a bicycle without impaired consciousness. During admission ophthalmologist evaluated the condition as severe contusion of t

AIMS: To characterise the epidemiology of eye trauma in the event of falls presenting to the emergency departments (ED) in the USA.
METHOD: Retrospective cohort study. Nationwide Emergency Department Sample was used to analyse fall encounters presenting to the ED with eye trauma from 2006 to 2015. National estimates of the leading diagnoses were determined, and multivariable regression was used to determine the relationship between factors involved in fall encounters presenting with eye trauma.
RESULTS: From 2006 to 2015, an estimated 87 991 036 fall encounters presented to the ED, of which

PURPOSE: Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) is the most feared visual consequence of head and ocular trauma in both military and civilian communities, for which standard treatment does not exist. Animal models are critical for the development of novel TON therapies as well as the understanding of TON pathophysiology. However, the models currently used for TON have some limitations regarding consistency and mirroring the exact pathological progression of TON in closed ocular trauma. In this study, we modified the model of controlled cortical impact and adapted it for studying TON.
METHODS: We de

Facial traumas are common in children but often unconsidered. Facial injury is responsible of impressive bleeding because of the rich vascularization of the face; this bleeding is often underestimated because of the immediate arterial vasoconstriction that is very strong for children. The blood volume is 80ml/kg for a newborn, with a total of 250ml, reaching 70ml/kg at one year of age. The evaluation must be rigorously performed due to the risk of a sudden decompensation. Regarding the wounds, the primary repair must be performed directly neat or optimal in case of damaged tissues. The rule is

Periorbital ecchymosis is due to extravasations of blood into the periorbital skin and the subcutaneous tissues around the eyes. 'raccoon eyes' or 'panda sign' is a distinctive type of periorbital ecchymosis where the bruising is characterised by tarsal sparing. This sparing is due to an anatomical structure called the orbital septum, which limits the spread of the discolouration beyond the tarsal plate. Hence 'raccoon eyes' description should be limited to orbital ecchymosis due to basal skull fractures only. While the bilateral bruising due to direct trauma to the eyes, or non-traumatic medi

The anatomical location of fractures following blunt cranio-orbital trauma is important for neurosurgeons and maxillofacial surgeons. In this study, 588 cranio-orbital fractures following blunt trauma were evaluated retrospectively with regard to the anatomical site and surgical treatment. Orbital cranial nerve injuries and the outcomes of the medical and/or surgical treatment are described. Distribution of the zygomatic complex and orbital fractures were as follows: zygomatic complex fractures (n:304), isolated orbital fractures (n:58), complex comminuted fractures (n:226). In 58 cases, 69 or

We report four unusual cases of upper eyelid retraction following periorbital trauma. Four previously healthy patients were evaluated for unilateral upper eyelid retraction following periorbital trauma. A 31-year-old man (Case 1) and a 24-year-old man (Case 2) presented with left upper eyelid retraction which developed after blow-out fractures, a 44-year-old woman (Case 3) presented with left upper eyelid retraction secondary to a periorbital contusion that occurred one week prior, and a 56-year-old man (Case 4) presented with left upper eyelid retraction that developed 1 month after a lower c

BACKGROUND: "Hornussen" is a traditional Swiss team game played in rural areas of Switzerland. A puck made out of hard plastic called "Hornuss" or "Nouss" is hit with a lash like racket into the field. The opposing team has to capture the flying puck with shovel like shields. Eye injuries are rare, however, very severe.
PATIENTS: We report on three patients who were seen and treated at the university eye clinic Berne in the last four years.
RESULTS: All injuries were blunt contusions with involvement of the periorbital soft tissues by a hit with the "Hornuss". In two cases orbital fractures

OBJECTIVE: The object of the study was to present successfully performed decompression of the orbit in orbital hematoma.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Male, 51 years of age sustained the contusion injury of the right eye during his fall on the bath tap. It caused the development of a large orbital hematoma with protrusion, restricted movement of the eyeball, pain, diplopia, folding of the retina due to hemtoma compression to bulbus oculi and retinal hemorrhages, higher intraocular pressure and impaired visual acuity to 2/60. He was treated by medicaments for a month, but the results were not favorabl

In a patient with acute orbital trauma, visual acuity and extraocular muscle motility are the two most important ophthalmologic functions to be evaluated emergently. The assessment of these capabilities may sometimes be difficult due to the severity of the head injury, the extent of periorbital soft tissue edema, inadequate cooperation in alert patients, and a reduced level of consciousness in obtunded individuals. Consequently, computed tomography (CT) has come to play a major role in the orbital examination of acute trauma patients. In this study, in conjunction with clinical evaluation, we

Penetrating orbital injuries are not frequent but neither are they rare. The various diagnostic and therapeutic problems are related to the nature of the penetrating object, its velocity, shape and size as well as the possibility that it may be partially or wholly retained within the orbit. The authors present another case with unusual characteristics and discuss the strategies available for the best possible treatment of this traumatic pathology in the light of the published data. The patient in this case was a young man involved in a road accident who presented orbito-cerebral penetration ca

Diplopia is a prominent finding in patients who have suffered orbital fractures. If the patient's double vision or ocular motility restriction was caused by soft tissue entrapment into the fracture site, surgery is frequently performed in order to release this entrapment and restore normal eye movement. However, the presence of diplopia should not necessarily be an indication for surgery. Brief case reports are hereby presented to illustrate that the symptoms of diplopia and motility restriction are not always attributable to the presence of orbital fractures that require surgical repair.
