BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) parasites of dogs, including helminths and protozoans, are of substantial relevance to veterinary medicine and public health. Nevertheless, epidemiological data are scarce worldwide, especially in remote locations. The emergence of novel technologies and diagnostic platforms facilitates comprehensive screening of multiple GI parasites. Our study aims to establish a baseline prevalence for GI parasites in dogs from Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands.
METHODS: Fecal samples were collected from dogs (n = 420) from May to June 2023 during a spay-neuter campaign. Ag

Rare cases of aphthous ulceration and eosinophilic enteritis in humans caused by Ancylostoma caninum (A. caninum), a common intestinal nematode of dogs worldwide, have been reported over the past century in several regions of the world. The present report involves a case of aphthous ulceration of the colon caused by A. caninum in Western Australia. The identity of the worm recovered during routine colonoscopy of a 35-year-old immunocompetent male was confirmed via morphological analysis and sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene and nuclear ribosomal internal trans

Hookworms are intestinal parasitic nematodes that chronically infect ~500 million people. How hookworms successfully overcome host protective mechanisms is unclear, but it may involve hookworm proteins that digest host tissues, or counteract the host's immune system, or both. To find such proteins in the zoonotic hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum, we used mass spectrometry to identify 565 genes encoding excreted-secreted (ES) proteins from adults, and used RNA-seq to identify genes expressed both in young adults (12 days post-infection) and in intestinal and non-intestinal tissues dissected from

PURPOSE: Hookworm infection affects approximately 438 million individuals globally and is a major cause of gastrointestinal distress and iron-deficiency anemia, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. This study aimed to standardize and evaluate a duplex real-time PCR assay for the simultaneous detection of Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus to improve diagnostic sensitivity and specificity.
METHODS: A total of 350 stool samples (50 for lab-based evaluation and 300 for clinical validation) were collected from the Department of Medical Parasitology, PGIMER, Chandigarh. Geno

Multiple anthelmintic drug resistance (MADR) is widespread in the canine hookworm Ancylostoma caninum in kenneled greyhounds in the USA and Australia with benzimidazole resistance being associated with the isotype-1 β-tubulin SNPs Q134H(CAA > CAT) and F167Y(TTC > TAC) in both cases. These two SNPs have also been found to be widespread, often at high frequency, in A. caninum populations in pet dogs across the USA but the situation in domestic dogs in other countries is currently unknown. Here, we report the identification of a single A. caninum population, from a Golden Retriever breeding kenne

Hookworm infections continue to impose a substantial burden on human and animal health, but the early host responses that influence parasite establishment are not fully characterized. Experimental models that reproduce key features of hookworm biology and host-parasite interactions remain essential for advancing translational research. In this study, we examined hematological, biochemical, immunological, and parasitological parameters during the acute phase of experimental hookworm infection using the Ancylostoma ceylanicum-Mesocricetus auratus model, a small-animal system widely employed for

In nonendemic countries such as Denmark, hookworm infections in travelers may be rare and difficult to detect because of low-grade shedding of parasite eggs and a lack of clinical suspicion and relevant diagnostic capacity. Two cases of hookworm infection observed in 2025 that were detected only through amplicon-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) of fecal DNA are presented in the current study. Both infections were characterized by hypereosinophilia and acquired during 2-week holidays in Asia. Case 1 was infected with Ancylostoma ceylanicum during a holiday in the Philippines, and Case 2 a

Ancylostoma caninum, the canine hookworm, is the most common and clinically important gastrointestinal nematode parasite infecting dogs in the US. Common clinical signs associated with acute infections include anemia, melena, hematochezia, dehydration, and poor weight gain or weight loss. In the past few years, multiple anthelmintic drug resistance to fenbendazole, moxidectin, and pyrantel pamoate has been documented in A caninum in the US, and cases of drug-resistant canine hookworms are increasingly being reported in the US and Canada. Clinical and genetic evidence strongly suggests that mul

Hookworms are widespread zoonotic parasites affecting humans and companion animals worldwide. We report molecular characterization of Ancylostoma ceylanicum and A. braziliense in a cat imported into Romania from Guadeloupe, an overseas administrative region of the French Republic in the Caribbean. This finding underscores the role of molecular diagnostics in detecting the transboundary introduction of exotic hookworms with significant zoonotic potential.

BACKGROUND: Hookworm is a widely known soil-transmitted helminth (STH) traditionally linked to iron-deficiency anemia caused by chronic blood loss in the small intestine. The classical human pathogens are Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus. However, emerging evidence indicates that Ancylostoma ceylanicum, a hookworm of cats and dogs, is a significant cause of human infection, particularly in Southeast Asia and other tropical regions. Its detection in human populations signals an evolving epidemiological landscape, challenging the previous notion that zoonotic hookworms have a negligi

Anthelmintic resistance is a growing threat to the treatment and control of parasitic nematode infections in both humans and animals. In the canine hookworm, Ancylostoma caninum, multi-anthelmintic drug-resistant (MADR) isolates have been identified, but the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance and the potential for these mechanisms to promote cross-resistance between drug classes remain unclear. In this study, we report evidence for a previously uncharacterized association between resistance to macrocyclic lactones (MLs) and benzimidazoles (BZs) in A. caninum. In a wild-type isolate wit

BACKGROUND: Dogs play an important role in the transmission of zoonotic parasites to humans. Among these, gastrointestinal (GI) helminths are widely prevalent and pose a significant public health risk. This study investigated the prevalence, molecular characterization and risk factors analyses of gastrointestinal nematodes in pet and semi-pet dogs in Haryana, India, to assess their potential zoonotic relevance.
RESULTS: A total of 310 faecal samples were collected from pet and semi-pet dogs from five randomly selected blocks of Hisar district of Haryana, India and examined for the presence of

Gastrointestinal parasitic infections adversely affect the health and well-being of animals worldwide. The limitations of the efficacy of pharmaceutical anthelmintics underscore the importance of finding alternative approaches to reduce the impact of parasitism on hosts. Investigating the anthelmintic properties of bioactive plants could be one way to contribute to this effort. The present study evaluates in vitro the activity of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Setaria barbata on the four free-living life stages of Ancylostoma caninum, the primary gastrointestinal nematode of dogs. PURPOSE: Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) released by NADPH oxidase and inflammation are associated with arterial hypertension and eye diseases associated with high blood pressure, including glaucoma, retinopathies (e.g., age-related macular degeneration), and choroidopathies affecting ocular function; however, the mechanisms underlying these adverse outcomes remain undefined. The present study was designed to highlight the importance of oxidative stress in severe hypertension-related eye damage.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats (n = 7, unless otherwise specified for specific experiments) wer

Soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections remain prevalent in India despite the ongoing deworming program. Here, we report a case of triple infection of Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale, and Strongyloides stercoralis, in a young asymptomatic and apparently immunocompetent female presenting with aluminium phosphide poisoning. Except for severe anaemia, the only other indicators of chronic infection were occasional abdominal pain and self-limiting loose stools. She was successfully treated for her conditions. This case highlights that despite regular deworming programs in children, S

BACKGROUND Ancylostoma caninum is a soil-borne, soil-transmitted helminth with infective larvae and produces cutaneous larva migrans in humans. The objective of this study was to confirm the presence of A. caninum in domestic dogs from the urban-marginal and rural sectors of the Ecuadorian coast through morphometry, culture, and molecular techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 498 domestic dogs were analyzed via 5 coproparasitic screening methods: direct, modified flotation, sedimentation with centrifugation using saline solution (identification of eggs), and modified Baermann and Harada-

Ancylostoma caninum is the most significant intestinal nematode parasite of dogs. We acquired fecal surveillance data from a large population of dogs in the United States (US). A diagnostic test using real-time PCR (qPCR) for Ancylostoma spp. and allele-specific qPCR detecting the SNP F167Y in the isotype 1 of the Beta-tubulin gene, was used in 885,424 randomized canine fecal samples collected between March 2022 and December 2023. Overall, Ancylostoma spp. had a prevalence of 1.76% (15,537/885,424), with the highest in the South 3.73% (10,747/287,576), and the lowest in the West 0.45% (632/140

BACKGROUND: Hookworms, specifically Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala, have a clinical impact on the health of dogs, with A. caninum posing a zoonotic risk worldwide. The studies presented here were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a novel, oral chewable tablet (Credelio Quattro) containing lotilaner, moxidectin, praziquantel, and pyrantel (as pamoate salt) against fourth-stage larvae (L4), immature adult, and adult A. caninum, as well as adult U. stenocephala, infections in dogs.
METHODS: Nine negatively controlled, masked, randomized laboratory studies evaluated the effica
