We conducted a prospective, randomized clinical trial of the use of 1% sodium hyaluronate (Healon) in the anterior chamber during anterior capsulotomy and nuclear expression in extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber lens implantation. We compared endothelial cell loss of patients implanted with lathe-cut posterior chamber lenses and those implanted with injection-molded lenses over a three-year postoperative period. Four cyclocryosurgical procedures were compared for effects on normal canine eyes. Human ciliary body epithelial cells have been maintained in vitro and have been partially characterized by the determination of growth rate, morphology, and ultrastructural parameters. Repeated intraocular injection of tetrodotoxin (TTX) was used to produce a maintained block of neural activity in goldfish optic axons which were regenerating following a crush of the optic nerve. The recovery of visual function was delayed in the TTX-treated fish, as demonstrated by delays in the return of the startle reaction to sudden illumination, the dorsal light reflex and food pellet localization. A procedure by which the activity of the retinal GABA uptake system can be manipulated in vivo has been developed. Intraocular injections of nipecotic acid, a proported GABA uptake blocker, were administered to adult rabbits every 48 hours for a two-week period. No behavioral or systemic changes were observed. Injections were well-tolerated with less than 10% loss of the tissue caused by physical damage or injection.
