Application of ophthalmic magnets in the removal of magnetic intraocular foreign bodies.

The aim of this study was to explore a new surgical method for removing magnetic intraocular foreign bodies(IOFB). We systematically reviewed 48 patients (48 affected eyes; 44 males and 4 females; aged 23-74 years, with a mean age of 44.8 ± 12.3 years) with magnetic IOFBs who were admitted to the Department of Ocular Trauma of Hebei Eye Hospital from January 2024 to June 2024. The most common cause of injury was ferrous foreign bodies resulting from working with metallic tools. Thirty-seven of the injuries were sustained in the patient's workplace, and 11 injuries occurred domestically. The pa

Orbital trauma caused by a swordfish bill.

A young man in his early 20s presented with complaints of a sudden onset of painful blurring of vision and active bleeding from his right eye following an injury while fishing. Examination revealed a triangular laceration in the right lower lid and an inferior 10 mm linear conjunctival laceration. Grade 1 relative afferent pupillary defect was noted with restricted extraocular motility. CT imaging revealed a foreign body in the inferior aspect of the right orbit. Under general anaesthesia, the patient underwent globe exploration via inferior conjunctival laceration, and the foreign body was re

Updates on the clinical management of intraocular foreign body (IOFB).

This review aims to summarise recent literature in the past decade, focusing on new insights, management strategies, and technique modifications for intraocular foreign body (IOFB) cases. We discuss the latest epidemiological data, diagnostic assessments, and challenging presentations of IOFB. Imaging, particularly non-contrast helical computed tomography with thin cuts, is a valuable diagnostic adjunct. The administration of perioperative prophylactic systemic and intravitreal antibiotics may be useful in reducing infective endophthalmitis risk. We recommend same stage IOFB removal with prima

The efficacy of autologous serum in corneal healing following metallic foreign body injuries.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of topical autologous serum (AS) on corneal healing following metallic corneal foreign body (CFB) trauma. METHOD: Following the removal of CFBs with a 26-gauge needle, patients were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 patients received topical moxifloxacin and preservative- free artificial tears, while Group 2 participants used these drops in addition to AS five times a day. Patients were followed until their corneal epithelial defects were closed. The baseline size of the epithelial defects was measured, and corneal densitometry measurements using Pentac

An evaluation of approaches to imaging for the pre-surgical assessment of intraocular foreign body size.

This study aims to assess the accuracy of CT imaging in estimating intraocular foreign body (IOFB) size by comparing pre-operative radiological measurements with post-surgical dimensions. A retrospective review of 12 cases over 9 years at a UK tertiary centre. IOFB size on CT imaging was compared with post-surgical measurements. Soft tissue window CT overestimated IOFB size (p=0.025). Bone window CT was more accurate but still varied, with one-third differing by>50% to definitive size. We conclude that caution is needed in CT-based IOFB size estimation. Plain radiographs may provide additional

Endophthalmitis due to a retained intraocular metallic object.

Endophthalmitis is a sight-threatening infection for which prompt diagnosis and treatment is central to improving patient outcomes. Diagnosing endophthalmitis can be difficult in the emergency department (ED), as its symptoms may be nonspecific and definitive testing equipment is delicate, requiring a high degree of familiarity to operate correctly. We present the case of a 42-year-old man who presented to the ED following a traumatic ocular injury. Fluorescein staining revealed a corneal abrasion. The patient was prescribed erythromycin ointment and a follow-up appointment with outpatient oph

Diagnostic assessment of computed tomography (CT) in open globe injuries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Accurate and timely diagnosis of Open Globe Injuries (OGIs) is crucial for implementing appropriate interventions. The goal of the present systematic review study is to evaluate the accuracy of CT in detecting OGI, especially in patients which conducting a detailed ophthalmologic examination or emergent surgical exploration is unavailable. The results of this study can aid clinicians in better management and pre-operative decision-making for patients with OGI’s. We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for relevant English papers up to August 2024. Included studies must re

Clinical and Optical Coherence Tomography Features of Ophthalmia Nodosa Type V: A Case Report.

Type V ophthalmia nodosa refers to intravitreal and/or intraretinal penetration of insect setae, which can lead to recurrent intraocular inflammation often requiring surgical removal along with systemic steroids. This report covers the case of a young man who presented with multiple intraretinal embedded setae following ocular trauma with insect. The condition was managed conservatively with oral and topical steroids alone, with sustained resolution of inflammation and no need for surgery. Unexpectedly, almost all intraretinal setae resolved without scarring or pigmentation. This case contribu

["Blessing Lies in What Is Hidden from the Eye": An Unusual Ocular Injury During an Ordinary Activity].

Ocular injuries in combat or field environments, particularly those resulting from shrapnel or blast mechanisms, frequently cause penetrating globe trauma. These injuries pose an immediate and severe threat to ocular integrity and commonly result in significant visual impairment, including blindness or loss of the globe itself. The primary challenge in these scenarios is prompt identification of globe perforation through clinical assessment and imaging, followed by urgent surgical intervention. We report the case of a male patient in his twenties who was urgently referred to our center with su

Unique presentation of impaction of glass fragments in the buccal, submasseteric and parotid spaces subsequent to road traffic accident.

Penetrating glass injuries in the facial region represent a very rare and complex variety of trauma. Cases of glass foreign bodies in the orbital tissue or the eyeball have been reported. Scattered glass foreign bodies in both the superficial and deep layers of the neck have been reported. However, no cases, to our knowledge, have been reported for foreign body impaction over the cheek region.Occasionally, the foreign glass particles can be retained in the anatomic spaces. These are mostly the result of road traffic accidents or by interpersonal violence. These penetrating injuries can result
