Changes in Melanopsin expression in the iris after corneal abrasion in an experimental rat model.

Melanopsin is a photoreceptive protein known to be important for non-image forming functions in the retina, where it is expressed in a small subset of retinal ganglion cells. Melanopsin is also found in the iris where it contributes to the pupillary light reflex in rodents, and in other tissues where its functions are not fully understood. This study assessed temporal changes in pain behavior (orbital tightening) and melanopsin immunofluorescence in the retina and iris in a corneal abrasion model. Pain behaviors peaked at 24 h after corneal abrasion and returned to near baseline levels at 1 we

Visual Loss Following Indirect Trauma: A Diagnostic Dilemma.

Monocular vision loss from indirect trauma can result in damage to the optic nerve, retina, or surrounding structures, often occurring without direct injury to the eye. In some cases, overlapping conditions can complicate the diagnosis. We present a case of monocular vision loss following indirect trauma, caused by traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) and Purtscher's retinopathy, emphasizing the diagnostic challenges encountered. A 28-year-old gentleman with no underlying medical conditions, who was involved in a motor vehicle accident and developed a sudden onset of central scotoma in his left ey

Artificial Intelligence for In-Flight Detection of Space-Related Ocular Trauma: Bridging Diagnostic Gaps in Microgravity.

Ocular trauma represents a threat to crew safety and mission performance in space. Microgravity, confined environments, and exposure to particulate matter, chemicals, and mechanical hazards place astronauts at risk for corneal abrasions, open-globe injuries, chemical burns, lens dislocation, retinal detachment, orbital fractures, and barotrauma. Diagnostic capabilities during spaceflight remain limited by resources, lack of specialist expertise, and communication delays with Earth. Artificial intelligence, particularly convolutional neural networks and multimodal models, may help address these

Umbilical Cord Amniotic Membrane Graft as a Skin Substitute in Periocular Reconstruction: A Case Series.

Loss of periocular skin due to cancer, trauma, or surgery is a major reconstructive challenge; resultant tissue contracture can cause eyelid malposition with poor functional and aesthetic outcomes. The authors describe the successful use of cryopreserved umbilical cord amniotic membrane as a wound covering and scaffold for periorbital anterior lamellar defects. This is a retrospective case series of 4 patients (mean 21 years, range 9-30 years, 3 male) who underwent periocular reconstruction with umbilical cord amniotic membrane of 9 different sites. Follow-up time ranged from 10 to 22 months.

Delayed Presentation of an Intraorbital Metallic Foreign Body: A Case Report and Surgical Intervention.

Ocular trauma remains a significant cause of vision loss, often resulting from penetrating injuries caused by foreign bodies such as glass, metal, wood, and other materials. Despite advancements in ocular surgery, retained intraorbital foreign bodies may lead to delayed complications if not promptly identified and managed. We present the case of a 59-year-old male who reported severe right eye pain and diplopia seven years following a work-related facial injury. Initially asymptomatic, a computed tomography (CT) scan later identified a 30-mm metallic foreign body lodged in the medial orbit. Su

We present a rare case of penetrating brain injury caused by an aftermarket steering wheel decoration during air bag deployment. A female driver was involved in a collision during which the driver's air bag deployed, propelling a crescent-shaped, sequin-covered decorative object into her face. The object penetrated the right globe and orbital roof, lodging in the right frontal lobe of her brain. Imaging confirmed the presence of an intracranial foreign body without vascular injury. The patient underwent successful globe repair and craniotomy for foreign body removal. She remained neurologicall
