Time Trends of Head Injuries Over Multiple Seasons in Professional Male Football (Soccer).

The present study aimed to investigate time trends of head injuries and their injury mechanisms since a rule change as monitoring may help to identify causes of head injuries and may advance head injury prevention efforts. Based on continuously recorded data from the German football magazine "kicker Sportmagazin ® " as well as other media sources, a database of head injuries in the 1 st German male Bundesliga was generated comprising 11 seasons (2006/07-2016/17). Injury mechanisms were analysed from video recordings. Injury incidence rates (IR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calcul

Chronic Neurobehavioral Sex Differences in a Murine Model of Repetitive Concussive Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) resulting from repeated head trauma is frequently characterized by diffuse axonal injury and long-term motor, cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Given the delay, often decades, between repeated head traumas and the presentation of symptoms in TBI patients, animal models of repeated injuries should be studied longitudinally to properly assess the longer-term effects of multiple concussive injuries on functional outcomes. In this study, male and cycling female C57BL/6J mice underwent repeated (three) concussive brain injuries (rCBI) delivered via a Leica Impact

Investigation into repetitive concussion in sport (RECOS): study protocol of a prospective, exploratory, observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Sport-related concussion management remains a diagnostic dilemma to clinicians in all strata of care, coaching staff and players alike. The lack of objective diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and over-reliance on subjective clinical assessments carries a significant health risk of undiagnosed concussive episodes and early return to play before full recovery increasing the risk of sustaining additional concussion, and leading to long-term sequelae and/or unfavourable outcome. OBJECTIVE: To identify a set of parameters (neuroimaging with neurophysiological, biological and neuro

Repetitive Diffuse Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Causes an Atypical Astrocyte Response and Spontaneous Recurrent Seizures.

Focal traumatic brain injury (TBI) induces astrogliosis, a process essential to protecting uninjured brain areas from secondary damage. However, astrogliosis can cause loss of astrocyte homeostatic functions and possibly contributes to comorbidities such as posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE). Scar-forming astrocytes seal focal injuries off from healthy brain tissue. It is these glial scars that are associated with epilepsy originating in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. However, the vast majority of human TBIs also present with diffuse brain injury caused by acceleration-deceleration forces lead

Advanced Diffusion Imaging in The Hippocampus of Rats with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is the most common type of acquired brain injury. Since patients with traumatic brain injury show a tremendous variability and heterogeneity (age, gender, type of trauma, other possible pathologies, etc.), animal models play a key role in unraveling factors that are limitations in clinical research. They provide a standardized and controlled setting to investigate the biological mechanisms of injury and repair following TBI. However, not all animal models mimic the diffuse and subtle nature of mTBI effectively. For example, the commonly used controlled cortic

Sex differences in cued fear responses and parvalbumin cell density in the hippocampus following repetitive concussive brain injuries in C57BL/6J mice.

There is strong evidence to suggest a link between repeated head trauma and cognitive and emotional disorders, and Repetitive concussive brain injuries (rCBI) may also be a risk factor for depression and anxiety disorders. Animal models of brain injury afford the opportunity for controlled study of the effects of injury on functional outcomes. In this study, male and cycling female C57BL/6J mice sustained rCBI (3x) at 24-hr intervals and were tested in a context and cued fear conditioning paradigm, open field (OF), elevated zero maze and tail suspension test. All mice with rCBI showed less fre

Acute peripheral inflammation and post-traumatic sleep differ between sexes after experimental diffuse brain injury.

Identifying differential responses between sexes following traumatic brain injury (TBI) can elucidate the mechanisms behind disease pathology. Peripheral and central inflammation in the pathophysiology of TBI can increase sleep in male rodents, but this remains untested in females. We hypothesized that diffuse TBI would increase inflammation and sleep in males more so than in females. Diffuse TBI was induced in C57BL/6J mice and serial blood samples were collected (baseline, 1, 5, 7 days post-injury [DPI]) to quantify peripheral immune cell populations and sleep regulatory cytokines. Brains an

Characteristics of pedestrian head injuries observed from real world collision data.

Head injury is one of the most common injury types in vehicle-to-pedestrian collisions, which leads to death and long-term disabilities. However, detailed analysis of pedestrian head injuries in real world collisions is scarce. Thus the current study used two samples of 120 cases and 184 cases extracted from 1060 pedestrian collision cases captured during 2000-2015 from the GIDAS (German In-Depth-Accident Study) database to investigate the detailed characteristics of AIS2+ pedestrian head injuries. Firstly, the interrelationship between different head injury types (skull fracture, focal brain

Case report of sudden death after a gunshot wound to the C2 vertebral bone without direct spinal cord injury: Histopathological analysis of spinal-medullary junction.

Gunshot wounds (GSW) are one of the most common causes of penetrating spinal injury, however few data are available regarding GSW causing an indirect fatal nervous tissue injury, such as that induced by the concussive force secondary to the bullet penetration. This report describes a rare case of a death following a GSW spine injury at the level of C2 vertebral body, without direct contact with the spinal cord, as seen with computed tomography scan performed soon after the death. At autopsy, vertebral canal and dura mater, as well as spinal cord and medulla oblongata, appeared devoid of pathol

Multi-parametric analysis reveals metabolic and vascular effects driving differences in BOLD-based cerebrovascular reactivity associated with a history of sport concussion.

Objective: Identify alterations in cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) based on the history of sport-related concussion (SRC). Further explore possible mechanisms underlying differences in vascular physiology using hemodynamic parameters modeled using calibrated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Method: End-tidal targeting and dual-echo MRI were combined to probe hypercapnic and hyperoxic challenges in athletes with (n = 32) and without (n = 31) a history of SRC. Concurrent blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) and arterial spin labeling (ASL) data were used to compute BOLD-CVR, ASL-CVR, and o

Evaluation and Comparison of Metabolic Disorders between Patients with Unilateral and Bilateral Staghorn Renal Stones.

OBJECTIVES: Person-related work requires workers to interact with individuals who are not employed at the workplace, eg, clients or patients. Besides (i) the general demands of interpersonal contact, this can entail (ii) emotional demands and (iii) conflicts/quarrels. These three potential stressors may negatively affect workers' mental health. We examined the associations of these three dimensions of person-related work with the risk of mental health problems, including diagnoses of depressive, anxiety/stress-related and alcohol-/drug-use disorders, pharmacotherapy for such disorders, and sui

Sleep problems contribute to post-concussive symptoms in service members with a history of mild traumatic brain injury without posttraumatic stress disorder or major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Many with a history of mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) experience sleep problems, which are also common symptoms of stress-related and mood disorders. OBJECTIVE: To determine if sleep problems contributed unique variance to post-concussive symptoms above and beyond symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder/major depressive disorder (PTSD/MDD) after mild TBI. METHODS: 313 active duty service members with a history of mild TBI completed sleep, PTSD, and mood symptom questionnaires, which were used to determine contributions to the Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory. RESULTS: 59%

Non-linearity in gaze holding: Experimental results and possible mechanisms.

Cerebellar impairment may cause deficits in horizontal gaze holding, leading to centrifugal gaze-evoked nystagmus during fixation of eccentric targets. Healthy individuals show a weak drift leading to physiological nystagmus only at large gaze angles. These drifts are due to imperfect memory of the neural circuitry generating the eye position signals by integration of velocity signals. The cerebellum plays a crucial role in reducing the "leakiness" of this neural integrator. This neural integrator has been traditionally modeled as a first order low-pass filter, implying a linear relation betwe

Disorders of consciousness terminology: history, evolution and future directions.

There has been a significant evolution of nomenclature with regards to classification of persons with disorders of consciousness (DoC) over the last 100 years. This paper provides a review of the evolution of this terminology with discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of historical and current terms. Recommendations for how this evolution should continue moving forward in the best interest of patients, their families, society, clinical care, and research will also be addressed. The taxonomy we choose, hopefully by international consensus, has multifaceted implications that go well bey
