Assessment of cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB) based method for the extraction of soil-transmitted helminth DNAs from stools for molecular dagnostic of soil-transmitted helminthiasis.

Although several protocols were developed to extract DNA for soil-transmitted helminthiasis diagnostic, amplifying these extracts remains challenging due to DNA polymerase inhibitors. This study aimed to assess a DNA extraction method for efficient detection of soil-transmitted helminth species by determining stool mass and the type of DNA polymerase that can be used for this extraction method. For this study, 141 stool samples harbouring soil-transmitted eggs and 50 samples without egg were obtained from school-aged children of Makenene in the Centre region of Cameroon. DNA was extracted from

Multiple overlapping risk factors for childhood wheeze among children in Benin.

BACKGROUND: The African continent is currently facing an epidemiological transition characterized by a shift from communicable to non-communicable diseases. Prominent amongst the latter are allergies and asthma. In that context, wheeze has multiple potential contributory factors that could include some of the endemic helminth infections, as well as environmental exposures, such as household air pollution. We sought to determine the relative importance of these risk factors among children in Benin. METHODS: We included 964 children aged 6-14 years living in the commune of Comé, south-west Beni

Prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections and genetic differentiation of Strongyloides stercoralis among migrant workers from Myanmar, Lao PDR and Cambodia in northeastern Thailand.

Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) remain a public-health problem worldwide, including in countries of the Lower Mekong subregion. Increases in human migration from neighboring countries might cause reemerging parasitic infections, leading to spread of parasites in the landscape. Here, we conducted a cross-sectional study to identify the prevalence of IPIs in migrant workers from Myanmar, Lao PDR, and Cambodia who were dwelling in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, northeastern Thailand. The identification of Strongyloides species and genetic differentiation of worms from migrant workers with dif

[Proteinuria associated with hookworm infection: a case report].

As a common soil-borne nematode, hookworm is mainly parasitized in the intestine, and the clinical manifestations of hookworm infections mainly include gastrointestinal symptoms and iron-deficiency anemia. In addition, hookworm may be also parasitized in other organs in addition to gastrointestinal system, resulting in development of disorders in other systems. Proteinuria caused by hookworm infections is rare and easy to be misdiagnosed in clinical practices. Hereby, the diagnosis and treatment of a case of proteinuria associated with hookworm infections was reported, in order to increase the

Advantages and Limitations of Microscopy and Molecular Detections for Diagnosis of Soil-transmitted Helminths: An Overview.

World Health Organization (WHO) reported that over 1.5 billion people are infected by soil-transmitted helminths (STH) worldwide in sub-Saharan Africa, the United States of America, China, and East Asia. Heavy infections and polyparasitism are associated with higher morbidity rates, and the patients are exposed to increased vulnerability to other diseases. Therefore, accurate diagnosis followed by mass treatment for morbidity control is necessary.STH diagnosis commonly involves the microscopic observation of the presence of the STH eggs and larvae in the faecal samples. Furthermore, molecular

Prevalence of intestinal parasites in Deula community, Kirtipur Municipality, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Infections with intestinal protozoans, helminths, and other parasites are major, but overlocked problems in developing countries. Accurate surveys of intestinal parasites in Deula community inform empirical treatment regimens and can assess the impact of community-based drug treatment programs. There is limited information on this topic in Nepal. In a prospective study of intestinal parasites in symptomatic people of the Deula community, January-July 2018, samples were examined by microscopy of a direct and concentrated faecal sample. We studied 150 samples. The median (inter-quartile range) a

Modeling the Interruption of the Transmission of Soil-Transmitted Helminths Infections in Kenya: Modeling Deworming, Water, and Sanitation Impacts.

Kenya, just like other countries with endemic soil-transmitted helminths (STH), has conducted regular mass drug administration (MDA) program for the last 5 years among school aged children as a way to reduce STH infections burden in the country. However, the point of interruption of transmission of these infections still remains unclear. In this study, we developed and analyzed an age structured mathematical model to predict the elimination period (i.e., time taken to interrupt STH transmission) of these infections in Kenya. The study utilized a deterministic age structured model of the STH po
