Acquired ear deformities can arise from various causes, including trauma, burns, cancer resection, and animal bites. This article presents a case of delayed ear reconstruction in a 30-year-old Caucasian female who suffered a traumatic partial ear amputation of the middle helix due to a horse bite. The reconstruction involved a 3-step surgical procedure: implantation of a tissue expander, reconstruction using an autologous septal cartilage graft, and recreation of the retroauricular sulcus. The tissue expander was inserted through a small incision, and inflation was performed over several weeks

Traumatic auricular amputation is a rare but highly disfiguring injury that poses significant reconstructive challenges. When microsurgical replantation is not feasible, subcutaneous implantation of the auricular cartilage framework, typically in the abdominal wall, is an established technique for cartilage preservation prior to delayed reconstruction. We report a case of successful auricular cartilage preservation and reimplantation following traumatic ear amputation sustained in a road traffic accident. A 22-year-old man presented with complete traumatic amputation of the left ear and an ext

Traumatic ear amputation secondary to human ear-bite is one of the common emergencies. If left untreated, it results in a deformity that causes social embarrassment and stigmatizes the victim. This case study documents primary ear reconstruction with "spare-part" amputated cartilage in a middle-aged, diabetic male after 24 hours of amputation. This reconstruction was performed using modified Mladick's Pocket technique in three stages over 90 days. There was complete cartilage take. Partial flap necrosis was managed conservatively. Over 18 months, the ear settled well and was nearly symmetrical

Total ear reconstruction in old avulsion injuries can be extremely challenging for reconstructive surgeons due to regional scarring. This rules out the use of local flaps. In this case report, a young woman presented to us with a seven-year-old total amputation of the left ear, which was initially reconstructed with a Medpor implant and occipito-parietal fascial flap. The implant had to be later explanted due to infection. The authors decided to use a pre-laminated radial free flap with a costal cartilage graft framework for ear reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Auricular amputation is rare but devastating to the patient's aesthetics and psychology. Only about 60 cases of successful microsurgical replantation were reported in the literature. There is currently no complete procedure for auricular replantation, including a recommended operating position.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four cases of microsurgical auricular replantation from February 2012 to July 2022 were studied. Data included age, cause, duration of ischemia, patient position, sequence of vascular anastomosis, method of arterial/venous anastomosis/grafting, amount of blood trans

Traumatic ear amputation (TEA) affects hundreds of Americans each year. However, there is little information regarding epidemiology, risk factors, and treatment for TEA, all of which enhance a surgeon's understanding of TEA and for treatment planning. This study included data from The National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) collected from the year 2017 to 2021. The variables analyzed included demographics, pre-existing comorbidities, mechanism of TEA, concurrent injuries, inpatient complications, reattachment details, length of stay, and discharge disposition for each subgroup. Descriptive statistics

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Auricular avulsion injuries present complex reconstructive challenges due to the intricate three-dimensional (3D) structure and vascular supply of the ear. This review examines traditional and emerging techniques in auricular trauma repair, including microsurgical advancements, digital planning, tissue engineering, and 3D bioprinting, highlighting their impact on reconstructive outcomes.
RECENT FINDINGS: Traditional techniques, such as multilayer closure and microsurgical reattachment, remain foundational in auricular reconstruction. However, recent studies suggest that sub

BACKGROUND: Traumatic auricular amputations present a unique surgical challenge, particularly in cases where microsurgical anastomosis is not feasible due to vessel damage or absence. Traditional reconstruction techniques often yield suboptimal aesthetic or functional results. The pocket technique, as described by Sexton and Mladick, has shown promise in such scenarios, particularly in partial auricular amputations.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 52-year-old Caucasian male who presented with traumatic amputation of the cranial third of the auricle following a dog bite. The injury wa

Reimplantation of amputated pinna has been a complicated issue for otorhinolaryngologists and plastic surgeons. Many techniques have been describes which include microvascular reconstruction and non microvascular reconstruction which come with their own advantages and disadvantages. Some surgeons have described totally removing the skin and burying the cartilage in a subcutaneous pocket in the abdomen (1). Mladick et al. in 1971 describe the technique of post auricular pocket which is used in our case to achieve the reimplantation of the segment (2, 3). Pennington et al. pioneered the techniqu

BACKGROUND: Traumatic ear amputation is a rare injury. Ear replantation is the gold standard in dealing with amputated ears. However, this is not always feasible. In this case series, the authors discuss the immediate reconstruction of traumatic ear amputation using temporoparietal fascia with the same skin from the amputated ear, which provided a high esthetic result and patient satisfaction.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors present a case series of 3 patients from July 2018 to May 2020 who suffered from traumatic ear amputation due to a human bite and were successfully reconstructed using

The auricle is susceptible to various injuries due to its location and projection from the scalp. The unique contours of the external ear makes reconstruction a challenging endeavor. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of auricular reconstruction, based on the depth, location, and size of injury. Strategies for reconstructing superficial, composite, and full-thickness injuries are discussed in relation to the location of the defect. Targeted reconstructive options for injuries of the upper, middle, and lower thirds of the auricle are outlined. Methods for total auricular reconstruct

Introduction Hemorrhage is the leading cause of preventable death in trauma in both the military and civilian settings worldwide. Medical studies from Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) informed change in military prehospital medicine by influencing widespread tourniquet distribution and training on their use to stop life-threatening extremity hemorrhage. In the military setting, there has been a significant reduction in preventable death due to extremity exsanguination since the widespread implementation of tourniquets within the Department of Defense. However,

BACKGROUND: The management of traumatic ear amputations remains a rare and difficult occurrence for surgeons. This is due to the fact that the chosen replantation technique must ensure the best vascular supply and the surrounding tissues have to be preserved as to not jeopardize a future auricular reconstruction in the event of replantation failure.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to review and synthesize the literature about the different surgical techniques described to date in the management of traumatic ear amputations (partial or total).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relevant articles were searche

BACKGROUND: There have been many reports on replantation of complete auricle amputation, but few reports on successful replantation of partial auricle amputation. The main reason is that the diameter of blood vessels at the end of auricle is only 0.3 mm, and it is difficult to find suitable blood vessels, especially venous vessels. The purpose of this study was to investigate the method of revascularization after partial auricle amputation.
METHODS: Microvascular repairs were performed in an amputated segment with only identified artery vessels for anastomosis, and vein was unavailable for an

Microsurgical replantation is considered the best method to treat avulsion or amputation injuries of unique head parts, including the scalp, eyelid, nose, ear, lip, and tongue. However, there is currently no report on microsurgical replantation of substi-tutable facial tissues in the literature. This report presents a patient with avulsed facial composite tissue composed of the skin and subcutaneous layers treated by microsurgical replantation. The present case shows that microsurgical replantation of small facial composite tissues is feasible. The authors suggest that the indication spectrum

Injuries of the auricle can range from simple lacerations to complete avulsions. Many techniques of ear replantation have been described in the literature in addition to the type and extent of the involved auricular structures. A direct reattachment of the amputated pinna without microsurgery is rarely successful due to necrosis of the avulsed fragment. Whereas, reconstructions with pocket methods and their variations might lead to better results. In this article we would like to discuss some of these approaches and demonstrate a two-stage reconstruction technique for subtotal avulsion of the

Traumatic ear avulsion (TEA) may have tremendous psychological consequences if not managed properly. There are no clear guidelines on the surgical management of these injuries, especially in developing countries where microsurgical facilities are lacking. We aimed to review the literature on surgical management of TEA with the main focus on direct re-attachment (DR) so as to develop a surgical management algorithm that can be applied in the absence of microsurgical facilities. We performed an extensive review of the relevant English literature on papers indexed in PubMed describing TEA repaire

The anatomic position of the auricle leaves it vulnerable to traumatic lesions. In most cases, the best reconstructive outcome is accomplished using a temporoparietal flap with a costal cartilage frame and a partial thickness skin graft. Exceptional cases may require different approaches because the reconstructive goals could be more structural than aesthetic. An important factor in this regard is the mechanical properties of the skin that will provide coverage. This study aimed to share a particular case of total auricular reconstruction assisted by 3D surface imaging and 3D printing in a rad
