Two replantations of severed ear parts.

Two successful cases of replantation of part of an ear are presented; both were done by simple suture. The larger of these replants consisted of a 13 x 43 mm segment of the superior helix and concha. Both were vascularized beofre 48 hours. The greatest problem was venous congestion. In the larger replant we made multiple puncture wounds daily on both sides of the graft with an 18-gauge needle to help relieve this.

[The correction of traumatic loss of substance from the auricle of the ear (author's transl)].

Simple and reliable repair techniques are described, selected for their simplicity, rapidity and the quality of the results obtained. For losses of substance of the helix, reduction of the pavillion (Antia) or a flat retro-auricular flap suffice for a limited loss, whilst miniature tubular flaps give a good result in cases of total loss. For the concha and the lobule, flat mastoid flaps (Rao-Preaux) are very simple to carry out. Following amputation, a broad, long Crikelair mastoid flap and Converse's tunnelisation procedure may be used to reconstruct the upper 2/3 and mastoid flaps (Preaux-Br

Microvascular surgery in avulsive trauma to the external ear.

Ears amputated as part of scalping injuries have a good chance of survival in favorable circumstances. Survival of subtotally amputated ears is probably enhanced materially by arterial repairs. One experience with a completely avulsed ear that was replaced with two arterial repairs and no vein repairs showed initial perfusion, but eventually failed.

Traumatic amputation of digits: the fate of remaining blood. An experimental and clinical study.

Experimental studies on rabbit ears amputated by either a clean sharp division or severed by a crushing blow showed that twice as much blood remained in the crush group. Microthrombi and tissue thrombi were seen in this group only. A review of 142 digital replantations performed over a 10 year period showed 126 survivals. Ninety-three were complete amputations and 80 of these survived; 49 were incomplete amputations and 46 survived after revascularization attemps. Of 74 clear amputations, 68 survived; of 68 crush-type amputations, 58 survived. Circulatory disturbances occurred in 36 replanted

Replantation of severed ear parts.

We have used a technique whereby a severed ear part is sutured back into place on "shaved" areas on the medical surface of the remaining ear and on the corresponding retroauricular area. After 4 to 6 weeks, the ears are freed and the raw surfaces are skin grafted. We think that replantation of severed ear parts is justifiable, and we recommend this method whereby the supply of blood vessels is increased.

Experimental and clinical application of microvascular surgery.

The object of these studies was the development of a technique whereby a vessel of 1 mm or smaller could be easily anastomosed. In total replantation of rabbit ears, only 3 ears survived replantation in 80 attempts in the first series. In the second series of 80, 35 ears survived completely, 3 ears partially survived and 8 additional ears survived the postoperative period, but the rabbits died within 2 weeks due to diarrhea. Thirty-five ears failed and venous obstruction was the primary cause. Free transplantation of a great toe and a second toe to recreate a thumb is also described. The opera

Replantation of the severed ear.

A successful replantation of a completely amputated ear segment using the modified subcutaneous pocket principle has been presented. This method overcomes most of the disadvantages of other reconstructive techniques.
