Efficacy of two rounds of albendazole treatment on soil-transmitted helminths in schoolchildren, Yunnan Province, China.

Mass drug administration (MDA) of albendazole to at-risk populations remains the primary strategy for controlling soil-transmitted helminths (STH). Despite its widely use, its efficacy varies among different STH species and remains sub-optimal, particularly in the treatment of T. trichiura. Currently, studies investigating the optimal dose and regimens for albendazole are lacking. A longitudinal cohort study was conducted to assess the efficacy of two single-dose albendazole 400 mg treatments given four weeks apart targeting STH infections compared with just one single-dose albendazole 400 mg

Soil-Transmitted Helminthes (STHs) and Asymptomatic Bacteriuria Amongst Preschool Children in the Bosomtwe District of Ghana.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and urinary tract infections (UTIs) pose major public health challenges, especially in regions with poor healthcare access, inadequate sanitation, and limited clean water supply. When these two conditions recur, they can cause stunted growth in children between 24 and 59 months of age, a vital phase for physical development. This study sought to assess the prevalence of STHs and asymptomatic bacteriuria among preschool children aged 1-5 years in the Bosomtwe District. A total of 344 children from 5 educational circuits were randomly selected for this study. Fe

Exploratory study characterizing gastrointestinal physiological changes during controlled human hookworm infection.

Hookworm infects over 400 million people globally and causes gastrointestinal morbidity, yet its physiological effects remain poorly defined. Controlled human hookworm infection is also being explored as a therapy for gut diseases. We performed an exploratory study to evaluate the impact of experimental Necator americanus infection on gastrointestinal transit, motility, and luminal pH in 10 healthy adults (mean age 41 yr, 60% females) infected with 30 larvae via skin application. Assessments using the SmartPill Wireless Motility Capsule were performed at baseline, week 6 (acute infection), and

Poor Response to Albendazole in Hookworm-Infected Abnormal Haemoglobin Carriers.

BACKGROUND: In southern Thailand, the low efficacy of albendazole contributes to the unsuccessful elimination of hookworms. Individuals infected with hookworms exhibiting low albendazole efficacy show decreased mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular haemoglobin and are suspected carriers of abnormal haemoglobin. This observational study aimed to compare the treatment outcomes of albendazole for hookworm infection in individuals with normal versus abnormal haemoglobin types. METHODS: 227 stool samples were examined using the Kato-Katz and agar plate culture methods. Blood samples were co

Ancylostomatidae in wild canids and felids from Romania: new host associations and haplotype diversity.

BACKGROUND: Hookworms (Ancylostomatidae) significantly impact on the health of both domestic animals and humans worldwide, with some species capable of causing zoonotic diseases. While hookworm infections in pets are frequently reported in Europe primarily through coproscopic studies, there are limited data regarding their presence in wild carnivores. To address this, this study aimed to assess the diversity, prevalence, and distribution of hookworms in wild canids and felids from Romania through both morphological and molecular analyses. METHODS: From November 2011 to February 2025, 319 carc

Human Intestinal Infection with the Dog Hookworm, Ancylostoma caninum, in Western Australia.

Rare cases of aphthous ulceration and eosinophilic enteritis in humans caused by Ancylostoma caninum (A. caninum), a common intestinal nematode of dogs worldwide, have been reported over the past century in several regions of the world. The present report involves a case of aphthous ulceration of the colon caused by A. caninum in Western Australia. The identity of the worm recovered during routine colonoscopy of a 35-year-old immunocompetent male was confirmed via morphological analysis and sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene and nuclear ribosomal internal trans

Diagnostic accuracy of nucleic acid amplification tests for human intestinal nematode infections: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The use of diverse diagnostic methods in the absence of a definitive gold standard makes it challenging to determine the most appropriate test for diagnosing human intestinal nematode infections (HINIs), particularly across various clinical settings with varying endemicity. The ideal diagnostic method should be feasible, cost-effective, and accurate. This review evaluates the diagnostic accuracy of nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), comparing them to the Kato-Katz (KK) and flotation methods for the detection of ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm infection, the Baermann

Unhooking the past: Early-life exposure to hookworm eradication and later-life longevity.

This study examines the long-term effects of the Rockefeller Sanitary Commission's (RSC) hookworm eradication campaign, initiated in the American South in the 1910s, on old-age longevity. Utilizing Social Security Administration death records linked to the 1940 full-count census, we employ a two-way fixed effect approach to examine the effects of early-life exposure to the eradication campaign on later-life outcomes. We find that individuals exposed to the RSC campaign during in-utero and early life experience an increase of approximately 1.3 months in longevity for a one-standard-deviation in

Comparative Survival of Hookworm Eggs and Strongyloides stercoralis First-Stage Larvae in Sludge From Septic Tanks.

BACKGROUND: This study compares the survival of hookworm eggs and Strongyloides stercoralis first-stage larvae (L1) in septic tank sludge. Laboratory evidence suggests these helminths differ in survivability, but real-world data are lacking. METHODS: We enrolled 24 households, each with at least one member positive for S. stercoralis and at least one member positive for hookworm. Each member used their own household latrine for defecation. We collected stool samples from 112 individuals, followed by sludge sampling from 24 septic tanks 2 weeks later. Stool samples were examined using agar pla

Geospatial risk prediction of hookworm infection and intensity among school-aged children in Dak Lak province, Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Hookworms remain problematic in Dak Lak province, Vietnam, despite a school preventive chemotherapy (PC) program since 2007. As hookworms depend on favourable ecological conditions, geospatial modelling incorporating environmental and climatic variables can predict high-risk areas for targeted interventions. This study provides geospatial risk predictions for hookworm infection and intensity among school-aged children in Dak Lak. METHODS: Hookworm infection status and intensity from 7,964 school-aged children from 64 schools collected in 2019-2020 during the Community Deworming fo

Comparison Between Phenotypic Profile and Functional Aspects of IL-9-Producing Lymphocytes, Th17 and Tfh of Individuals From Endemic and Non-Endemic Areas for Hookworm Infection.

Hookworm infections remain a major public health concern in endemic areas, modulating both the adaptive and innate immune systems. While the type 2 response is well-characterised, the roles of T follicular helper (Tfh), Th17, and IL-9-producing lymphocytes remain poorly defined. Here, we characterised these T cell subsets in individuals naturally infected with hookworms. From 1500 faecal samples screened, 60 were positive for hookworms, and peripheral blood was collected from 10 uninfected controls from endemic (NEG END) and non-endemic (NEG NE) areas, as well as from 7 infected individuals be

Hookworm genes encoding intestinal excreted-secreted proteins are transcriptionally upregulated in response to the host's immune system.

Hookworms are intestinal parasitic nematodes that chronically infect ~500 million people. How hookworms successfully overcome host protective mechanisms is unclear, but it may involve hookworm proteins that digest host tissues, or counteract the host's immune system, or both. To find such proteins in the zoonotic hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum, we used mass spectrometry to identify 565 genes encoding excreted-secreted (ES) proteins from adults, and used RNA-seq to identify genes expressed both in young adults (12 days post-infection) and in intestinal and non-intestinal tissues dissected from

Current issues in heartworm chemotherapy.

Several issues that affect prevention and treatment of heartworm infections require more intensive research. The incidence of heartworm infection in the USA is increasing, but the factors that underlie this trend remain incompletely understood. The contributions of climate change, vector range expansion, client compliance and resistance to macrocyclic lactones (ML) are likely interrelated and require investigation. Molecular-level research has not yet identified the causative mechanisms underlying ML resistance (MLR), but surveys of genomic markers associated with the trait reveal worrying tre
