MRI-based cortical morphometry in traumatic brain injury: a pilot longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can result in various changes to cortical morphometry which may negatively affect quality of life for individuals with TBI. Previous research has identified both increases and decreases in cortical volume, surface area and thickness across brain regions, suggesting that the impact of TBI on cortical morphometry remains unclear. This project used the "recon-all-clinical" pipeline on 4 mm Axial MRI scans to investigate cortical volume, surface area and thickness following TBI, which is important for improving understanding of post-injury neuroanatomical chan

Intensive Care Unit Utilization in Older Adult Traumatic Brain Injury Patients Following Ground-Level Falls: A Single-Center Retrospective Review.

BACKGROUND: Ground-level falls (GLFs) have become the leading cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in older adults, surpassing motor vehicle collisions over the last decade. Older adults with TBI frequently require intensive care unit (ICU) admission and need neurosurgical intervention. This study evaluates ICU utilization and clinical outcomes in older adults with TBI following GLFs. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective study of patients aged 60 years or older with radiographically confirmed TBI after a GLF during 2024. Multivariable Firth's penalized logistic regression eval

Admission Neurological Status, Radiological Mass Effect, and In-Hospital Mortality Among Surgically Treated Patients with Traumatic Acute Subdural Hematoma: A Single-Center Experience from Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) carries high morbidity and mortality despite surgery. We evaluated associations of admission neurological status and radiological mass effect with in-hospital mortality. An exploratory analysis examined a composite unfavorable Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) outcome, with in-hospital mortality as its largest component. METHODS: This retrospective study included 82 adults treated surgically for traumatic ASDH between January 2020 and December 2025. The Zumkeller index (midline shift minus hematoma thickness) was categorized as <0, 0-3, or >3 mm.

Residence-Based Geospatial Analysis of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury in a Regional Neurotrauma System.

OBJECTIVE: Severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) creates a substantial burden on neurotrauma systems. While geospatial analyses of TBI have focused on injury location, less is known about how patients' residential environments contribute to regional sTBI burden. This study aimed to identify residence-based spatial clustering of sTBI across Long Island and characterize community-level factors associated with excess incidence. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adults (≥18 years) with sTBI (Glasgow Coma Scale ≤8) admitted to a Level 1 trauma center (2010-2021). Patient-reporte

Facial Injury Severity Scale and Frontal-Segment Involvement as Risk Stratification Markers in Panfacial Fractures: A Single-Center Retrospective Study.

Panfacial fractures are high-energy injuries. We evaluated whether the Facial Injury Severity Scale (FISS) and frontal-segment involvement are associated with early surgical complications, length of stay, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and craniocerebral injury. Thirty-four panfacial fracture patients treated between January 2016 and May 2026 were analyzed retrospectively at a single center. Fractures were classified with the Erdmann-Follmar four-segment model (≥3 of 4 segments); FISS used the Duke modified system. Because several tables were sparse, associations were estimated by Firth

ZRANB1-mediated EZH2 stabilization drives S100B/S100A4 transcriptional activation and corneal neovascularization in alkali burns.

Alkali burn is one of the main causes of corneal injury. Corneal neovascularization caused by alkali burns aggravates corneal damage, resulting in aberrant vascular proliferation and consequent visual impairment. The present study investigated the role of enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) in alkali burn‑induced corneal neovascularization. Through integrated bioinformatics and experimental approaches, we identified S100B, S100A4 and PI3K/AKT pathway activation as key drivers of alkali-induced corneal injury. In corneal alkali burn mice, knockdown of S100B or S100A4 attenuated corneal neovascul

Glass intraocular foreign body removal assisted by biological amniotic membrane: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The extraction of large, sharp-edged nonmagnetic intraocular foreign bodies carries risks of iatrogenic retinal injury with conventional instruments. Biological amniotic membrane is known to be safe for intraocular use, but its application as a protective wrap to remove a foreign body has not been reported to our knowledge. We describe this novel approach. CASE PRESENTATION: A man in his forties presented with blurred vision and a retained intraocular glass fragment (5 × 3 × 1 mm) in the left eye, with visual acuity of 20/32. During vitrectomy, attempts to mobilize the sharp fragm

Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy Evaluation of a Retinal Explant Model of Iron Intraocular Foreign Body Injury.

Iron intraocular foreign body (IOFB) can cause retinal damage, which may be related to the release, transfer, and tissue infiltration of iron particles. Sustained retinal impairment may occur after surgical removal of an iron IOFB, while direct in situ evidence of residual retinal iron deposition remains limited. A retinal explant model combined with regional scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to examine retinal morphology and elemental distribution after iron foreign body exposure and removal. SEM analysis showed that, in the Fe group, the retinal

Pediatric abusive head trauma: A nursing call to action.

Pediatric abusive head trauma (AHT) is the leading cause of death from physical child abuse in the United States. The term "pediatric AHT" replaced the former descriptor, "shaken baby syndrome," to include all nonaccidental head injuries. AHT can present with a wide range of symptoms that are often vague, including lethargy, vomiting, and irritability, leading to missed diagnoses. Various clinical decision tools assist in the efficient and accurate detection of AHT. Nurses play a pivotal and opportune role in the prevention, screening, and education. This article discusses the risk factors, cl

Biomechanical assessment of repetitive brain injury in pedestrian collisions based on wavelet packet energy analysis.

PURPOSE: Existing brain injury criteria mainly focus on assessing injuries in a single collision and lack of assessment of injuries in real-world multiple collisions. METHODS: Based on the head kinematics signals of rats in repeated collisions and pedestrian accident data, the frequency domain characteristics of linear and rotational motion signals were analyzed by wavelet packet transform. Finally, the ROC curve was used to evaluate the effectiveness of injury index prediction. RESULTS: The results of animal experiments show that as the impact intensity increases, the energy in the frequenc
