Genetic diversity, population structure, and benzimidazole resistance profiling of Ascaris lumbricoides in northwestern Thailand.

Ascaris lumbricoides remains one of the most prevalent soil-transmitted helminths worldwide, with ongoing transmission in endemic regions despite long-standing control programs. This study investigated the genetic diversity, population structure, and benzimidazole resistance of A. lumbricoides across three endemic regions of Thailand using mitochondrial (cox1 and nad1) and nuclear (β-tubulin) markers. Haplotype network analysis identified 13 haplotypes within the Thailand dataset, including three newly identified haplotypes, indicating measurable genetic diversity at the local scale. When anal

Current strategies for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes of pigs in Europe.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) remain an often-underestimated challenge in European pig production, affecting animal health, performance, and economic outcomes. The predominant species, Ascaris (A.) suum, Oesophagostomum (O.) spp., and Trichuris (T.) suis, impair growth, feed efficiency, and carcass quality, whilst also contributing to reproductive losses and liver condemnation. Moreover, GIN can modulate host immunity, interfere with vaccine responses, and influence coinfection outcomes, thereby compromising overall herd health. The zoonotic potential of A. suum and T. suis further highligh

Adult Ascaris suum roundworms and their antigens modulate the porcine intestinal microbiome and metabolome.

The porcine roundworm, Ascaris suum, affects host intestinal physiology, microbiota composition and metabolic profiles. To better understand the mediators of these alterations, six pigs each were experimentally exposed to (i) 30 adult roundworms via gastric tube, or (ii) received injections into the duodenum of A. suum total excretory-secretory (ES) antigens, ES antigens secreted exclusively from the parasites' body surface (trans-cuticular ES), or cuticular somatic antigens, respectively. Six further pigs served as untreated controls. Microbiome composition in faeces, ingesta and mucosa sampl

Massive Ascariasis Causing Extensive Jejunoileal Necrosis and Septic Shock in a Toddler.

A 2.5-year-old boy who had recently migrated from a northern highland area of Vietnam to the south presented with fever, diarrhea, progressive respiratory distress, and severe abdominal distension. He was referred in septic shock, requiring mechanical ventilation and two vasopressors. Emergency laparotomy revealed complete jejunoileal obstruction from a dense bolus of more than 100 Ascaris lumbricoides worms and approximately 70 cm of transmural bowel necrosis. Segmental resection, complete worm extraction, and primary end-to-end anastomosis were performed. Histopathology confirmed transmural

Determination of diagnostic cycle threshold cutoffs for qPCR-based prevalence surveys of soil-transmitted helminth infections.

World Health Organization guidelines for control of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) rely on coproscopic methods to assess population prevalence. In low-prevalence and light-intensity STH settings, quantitative PCR (qPCR) has higher sensitivity and specificity for detection. For qPCR to accurately identify transmissible infections of public health significance, it is essential to interpret qPCR cycle threshold (Ct) results. As part of the DeWorm3 community-based cluster-randomized trial on interrupting STH transmission, we conducted population-based surveys using high-throughput qPCR and aime

Small bowel volvulus secondary to ascariasis in a 7-year-old boy: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Ascariasis, caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, is the most common soil-transmitted helminth infection worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. While most cases remain asymptomatic, heavy worm infestations may lead to severe complications, including bowel obstruction. Small bowel volvulus secondary to ascariasis is exceedingly rare and potentially fatal, especially in children. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 7-year-old boy from rural Ethiopia who presented with acute abdominal pain, distension, and vomiting. Examination revealed peritonitis and imagin

A rare case of gastric ascariasis.

BACKGROUND: Ascariasis, caused by the parasitic roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides, is one of the most common helminthic infections globally. Spread by contaminated soil through the fecal-oral route, A. lumbricoides typically infects the small intestine and has rarely been reported to infect the stomach. CASE SUMMARY: We describe an unusual case of a male in his 30s with a history of neuroendocrine tumor (NET) who immigrated from Colombia and who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopy for further evaluation of abdominal pain. He was incidentally found to have a female Ascaris

Animal Welfare, Carcass-Processing Practices and Post-Mortem Lesions in Nigerian Municipal Slaughterhouses: Implications for Meat Quality and Public Health Security.

This five-month epidemiological investigation evaluated pre-slaughter welfare, carcass-processing practices, and post-mortem lesion prevalence in 1012 cattle and 413 pigs slaughtered in Enugu State, Nigeria. Direct observations and post-mortem inspections were conducted following OIE standards. Animal welfare was markedly compromised. Cattle were dragged from the lairage to kill floor, restrained in lateral recumbency for over 30 min before bleeding, and slaughtered without stunning. Pigs were transported tied to motorcycles and processed on unsanitary floors. The lairages lacked roofing, clea

Morbidity and Mortality in Zoo-Housed Daurian Pikas (Ochotona dauurica).

An investigation was conducted into the causes of morbidity and mortality in a breeding colony of Daurian pikas (Ochotona dauurica) housed at the Minnesota Zoo. Gross necropsy and histopathology records from all animals that died between 2011 and 2016 were reviewed to identify causes of death and associated comorbidities. Post-mortem tissue mineral panel data were also evaluated. A total of 69 necropsies were performed during the study period, with 30 cases having complete histopathology available for analysis. No animals survived to the geriatric age class. The most common cause of mortality

Molecular diagnosis of an immature Ascaris lumbricoides infection with negative parasitological examinations.

Ascariasis is one of the most prevalent parasitic infections worldwide, particularly in developing countries, and is caused by Ascaris lumbricoides. Diagnosis can be challenging during the early stages of infection, especially when adult helminths have not yet become established in the intestine and routine parasitological examinations yield negative results. A 40-year-old female patient was referred to a hospital in South Tehran, Iran, with various clinical manifestations, including gastrointestinal symptoms, abdominal cramps, respiratory distress, cough, wheezing, localized skin itching, and

Gallbladder Ascariasis Presenting as Acalculous Biliary Colic.

We detail a case of gallbladder ascariasis, presenting as an acute episode of acalculous biliary colic, nausea, bloating, an unremarkable abdominal ultrasound, and negative helminth and protozoa stool smears. A follow-up ultrasound provided unexpected images consistent with gallbladder infection by Ascaris lumbricoides. Repeat ultrasonography performed 10 days after anthelmintic therapy showed no live worms and 2 newly appearing echogenic areas suggestive of gallbladder calculi that were confirmed following elective cholecystectomy. The case course highlights key clinical, diagnostic, and mana

A Paired-Marker Framework for Interpreting Anti-Ascaris lumbricoides IgG Serology and Copromicroscopy: A Cross-Sectional Study in Almaty and the Almaty Region, Kazakhstan.

BACKGROUND: Stool microscopy and anti-Ascaris IgG serology assess different, but related biological domains. Joint interpretation can identify immunological exposure and intestinal egg shedding without assuming one or both markers are a measure of current infection independently. OBJECTIVE: To develop a four-pattern paired-marker framework for anti-A. lumbricoides IgG and copromicroscopy results from adults in Kazakhstan and to assess the qualitative analytical concordance of two IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). METHODS: The cross-sectional field study involved 1000 adult vol

A case report of acute liver failure caused by biliary ascariasis in children.

Most patients with biliary ascariasis present with acute abdominal pain and biliary colic. Typically, conservative treatment involving deworming agents is employed. However, for those who do not respond to pharmacological therapy, endoscopic or surgical intervention becomes necessary. Generally, the mortality rate is low, and the prognosis is favorable. This case describes a pediatric patient exhibiting symptoms of intestinal disease, including upper abdominal pain and jaundice, resulting from extrahepatic biliary tract obstruction caused by roundworms. This condition subsequently led to compl

Worm Colic by Massive Biliary Ascariasis: A Case Report.

Biliary ascariasis is a well-recognized hepatobiliary complication of infection with Ascaris lumbricoides. The disease remains highly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Southeast Asia, where environmental and socioeconomic factors facilitate transmission. We report a 73-year-old female who presented with right hypochondriac pain with abdominal ultrasonography of biliary ascariasis, which was successfully managed with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, extracting 14 A. lumbricoides.

Uncommon presentations of ascariasis: A case series including gallbladder ascariasis and Löffler's syndrome.

Gallbladder ascariasis is an uncommon manifestation of ascaris lumbricoides infection, typically seen in the endemic regions. Even rarer is the concurrent presence of Löffler's syndrome. We report the two cases - the first, a 92-year-old male, presented with typical biliary colic and was diagnosed with gallbladder ascariasis. The second, a 38-year-old female, presented with respiratory symptoms and was found to have ground-glass opacities on high-resolution computed tomography and peripheral eosinophilia, later associated with gallbladder ascariasis on imaging. Both cases were managed conserva

Unveiling the rare: biliary tract ascariasis complicated by liver abscess and haemothorax.

Ascariasis, caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, is a common parasitic infection in developing countries, whereas biliary ascariasis is an uncommon manifestation that may present as cholangitis, biliary obstruction, or cholecystitis. We report the first documented case of biliary ascariasis in a 43-year-old Saudi man presenting with right upper quadrant pain and initially diagnosed with acute cholecystitis. Imaging revealed tubular filling defects within the biliary tree consistent with ascariasis, complicated by a liver abscess. The patient was treated with albendazole, followed by percutaneous dr
