Small bowel obstruction due to Ascaris lumbricoides in a child: A case report from Northwest Ethiopia.

Ascaris lumbricoides is the most common soil-transmitted helminth affecting humans, predominantly in low-income countries. Although usually asymptomatic, heavy infestation can lead to serious complications such as intestinal obstruction, particularly in children whose narrower intestinal lumen predisposes them to luminal blockage by worm boluses. A 6-year-old male child presented to the surgical emergency department of Tibebe Ghion Specialized Teaching Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia, with 3 days of severe crampy, centrally located abdominal pain and frequent vomiting. Examination revealed classi

Gastrointestinal Ascariasis: Unusual Presentation in 2 Cases.

Ascariasis is a helminthic infection caused by the nematode Ascaris lumbricoides and remains the most prevalent helminth infection worldwide. Although typically asymptomatic or limited to intestinal symptoms, intestinal ascariasis can present unusually as demonstrated in these two cases. The first case involves a 73-year-old male who was being treated for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) - induced upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) and was incidentally found to harbor Ascaris worms in the duodenum during endoscopy. The second case describes a 63-year-old male with decompensated

Diagnostic accuracy of nucleic acid amplification tests for human intestinal nematode infections: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The use of diverse diagnostic methods in the absence of a definitive gold standard makes it challenging to determine the most appropriate test for diagnosing human intestinal nematode infections (HINIs), particularly across various clinical settings with varying endemicity. The ideal diagnostic method should be feasible, cost-effective, and accurate. This review evaluates the diagnostic accuracy of nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), comparing them to the Kato-Katz (KK) and flotation methods for the detection of ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm infection, the Baermann

Genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships of human-derived Ascaris spp. based on mitochondrial markers.

Ascaris species are common soil-transmitted helminths infecting both humans and pigs. It is recognized as one of the Neglected Tropical Diseases and is currently targeted in global eradication initiatives. This study employed mitochondrial 'NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 NAnad1) and Cytochrome Oxidase 1 (cox1) gene' sequences comprising newly generated and publicly available data to investigate the genetic diversity, evolutionary relationships, and potential zoonotic transmission between Ascaris lumbricoides and Ascaris suum. Phylogenetic analysis revealed distinct clustering, with Indian A. lum

Disseminated ascariasis infection with encephalopathy: Molecular confirmation and phylogenetic insights.

Ascariasis remains a major parasitic infection in low-resource regions, with children at highest risk. We describe a rare and severe pediatric case from rural Colombia involving intestinal obstruction, peritonitis, cholecystitis, and encephalopathy. A recovered helminth underwent stereoscopic examination and molecular characterization through amplification of 18S-rRNA and COII genes, followed by long-read sequencing using Oxford Nanopore technology. Taxonomic analysis with Centrifuge and BLAST confirmed the specimen as Ascaris, showing high similarity to Ascaris suum, while COII phylogenetics

Ascaridia galli Excretory-Secretory Proteins Suppress Intestinal Epithelial Proliferation and Trigger TLR4-Mediated Inflammation.

Ascaridia galli is the most prevalent nematode parasite in the intestinal tract of chickens. However, the direct impact of A. galli excretory-secretory proteins (ESPs) on intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) function and the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. To address this, A. galli ESPs were isolated for investigation of their tissue localization and effects on IECs. Immunohistochemical analysis localized ESPs to the parasite's cuticle and internal tissues. LC-MS/MS identification revealed 26 putative ESPs that bind to chicken IECs, including actin, heat shock proteins, elongation factor-1

A Scoping Review of the Associations Between Ascariasis, Helicobacter pylori Infection and Gastric Pathologies.

Ascaris infection-ascariasis-is the most common human parasitic worm infection worldwide and induces damage and cellular changes within the stomach. Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium of the stomach that also causes gastric pathologies globally. Importantly, Ascaris, H. pylori, and gastric diseases all disproportionately affect individuals in resource-limited settings. However, the associations between ascariasis, H. pylori infection, and gastric diseases remain relatively unexplored. We synthesized the existing research associating Ascaris infection with H. pylori infection and/or gastric pat

1H NMR-based metabolomics reveals metabolic changes in porcine ingesta and serum during Ascaris suum infection.

BACKGROUND: Roundworm infections are of major importance both for humans and livestock. The porcine roundworm Ascaris suum, the most economically important nematode in pig production worldwide, serves as a valuable model for human ascariosis, yet knowledge of its metabolic impact remains limited. METHODS: Metabolic changes were investigated in pigs infected once with 10,000 A. suum eggs versus trickle-infected pigs (1000 eggs/day over 10 days) compared with uninfected controls. Ingesta and serum samples of six pigs each were collected on days 21, 35, and 49 post infection (pi) for nuclear mag

Identification of a persistent Ascaris-derived Kalirin epitope associated with chronic T cell activation in the lung.

Ascariasis remains a dominant global health burden due to its vast prevalence and associated morbidity. The obligatory migration of Ascaris larvae through pulmonary tissue triggers intense type-2 inflammation which typically presents as acute allergic airway disease. Even after the parasite is eliminated, a single episode of larval migration can result in chronic lung damage and dysfunction, which may be driven by the long-term retention of helminth antigens in macrophages. However, the molecular identity of these retained antigens, and the mechanisms by which they sustain chronic T cell respo

Immunomodulatory effects of snake venom C-type lectins in vaccine formulations against ascariasis in mice.

The search for novel vaccine adjuvants capable of enhancing or directing effective immune responses when combined with target antigens remains a global priority. Snake venom-derived biomolecules have previously demonstrated immunomodulatory activity in vitro, as reported in earlier studies, suggesting potential application as vaccine adjuvants. In this study, we evaluated the adjuvant potential of a C-type like lectin from Crotalus durissus terrificus (CVX) and a C-type lectin from Bothrops jararacussu (BjcuL) snake venoms in a murine immunization model using the recombinant BOT protein, previ

Disseminated Peritoneal Nematode Infestation Causing Adhesive Small Bowel Obstruction and Bowel Gangrene Following Perforated Appendicitis: A Case Report.

Disseminated peritoneal nematode infestation is a rare extra-intestinal manifestation of ascariasis, typically occurring following bowel perforation. We report a case of a male in his 60s presenting with features of acute small bowel obstruction, including abdominal pain, distension, obstipation, and bilious vomiting, with a history of perforated appendicitis managed surgically six months prior. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography suggested small bowel obstruction. Intraoperative findings revealed dense adhesions, gangrenous ileum, and multiple nodular lesions over the small bowel, mesentery

Intermittent Ileitis and Partial Small-Bowel Obstruction Due to Intestinal Helminth Infection Mimicking Crohn's Disease.

Intestinal helminth infections may present with chronic gastrointestinal symptoms and can mimic inflammatory or obstructive bowel pathology, leading to diagnostic challenges. A 27-year-old previously healthy male presented with nine months of intermittent abdominal pain, nausea, and bloating with concern for partial small-bowel obstruction. He reported frequent hunting and environmental exposure associated with field dressing and preparation of wild game. Imaging demonstrated distal ileal wall thickening with upstream dilatation, and laboratory studies revealed marked peripheral eosinophilia.

Chronic Fasciola hepatica infection in a patient with cutaneous visceral loxoscelism: paediatric case report.

We present the case of a 9-year-old girl from the Peruvian Andean Region (Ancash), diagnosed with fascioliasis, who was also suffering from severe malnutrition. Initially, she was referred for treatment of skin necrosis caused by cutaneous visceral loxoscelism, but during hospitalisation she developed persistent vomiting and pancreatitis. Magnetic resonance cholangiography showed dilation of the intrahepatic and common bile ducts. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography identified an adult Fasciola spp. specimen. She also expelled adult worms of Ascaris lumbricoides during vomiting. Del

Fermentable fiber supplementation in pigs promotes anti-parasitic defense mechanisms and impacts parasite growth in Ascaris suum infection.

Ascarids are among the most prevalent soil-transmitted helminths affecting both humans and livestock, particularly pigs. While reduced anthelmintic efficacy has been reported in humans, frequent reinfection and the lack of a vaccine highlight the need for alternative control strategies across species. In pigs, fermentable dietary fibers have been shown to enhance type 2 immune responses and mucosal barrier function and may represent a complementary strategy for parasite control. Here, we investigated the effects of a fermentable fiber diet in pigs infected with the parasite Ascaris suum (A. su

Predicting suitable spatial niches in the Philippines for Ascaris lumbricoides using bioclimatic envelope models.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies on the spatial distribution of A. lumbricoides in the Philippines have used the data available from the nationwide parasitological survey in the early 2000s. This study developed an updated predictive map of the spatial distribution of ascariasis occurrences in the Philippines using data from 2000-2020 to identify high-risk areas for ascariasis. METHODOLOGY: Data were acquired from WorldClim and included 19 bioclimatic variables. Additionally, the geographical distribution of species occurrence records was obtained through literature and known medical reports for

Rodents as mechanical vectors for Ascaris suum in pig farms.

Rodents are well-recognized agricultural pests, causing significant damage to crops and infrastructure, as well as posing health risks to both animals and humans by transmitting various infectious agents. On livestock farms, they can contribute to disease transmission dynamics, for example by acting as mechanical vectors that carry pathogens from one stable to another, forming a hidden transmission network. This study explored the potential role of commensal rodents as mechanical vectors for the roundworm Ascaris suum on pig farms in Belgium. While A. suum is a highly prevalent intestinal para
