Two-photon NAD(P)H-FLIM reveals unperturbed energy metabolism of Ascaris suum larvae, in contrast to host macrophages upon artemisinin derivatives exposure.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are widespread, with Ascaris lumbricoides infecting millions globally. Malaria and STH co-infections are common in co-endemic regions. Artemisinin derivatives (ARTs)-artesunate, artemether, and dihydroartemisinin-are standard malaria treatments and are also known to influence the energy metabolism of parasites, tumors, and immune cells. Herein, we explore the potential of ARTs to influence ascariasis either by directly targeting larvae or indirectly by modifying macrophage responses. Ascaris suum third-stage larvae and porcine IL-4 polarized (M2-like) macrophag

Efficacy and safety of ivermectin-albendazole combination versus ivermectin or albendazole monotherapy in soil-transmitted helminthiasis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiasis remains a daunting challenge to global health, exerting its greatest toll on resource-limited regions of the world. A dual drug approach using the co-administration of ivermectin and albendazole has shown promising results in comparison to the traditional monotherapy strategy. In light of this, a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted. METHODS: Several electronic databases including PubMed, Cochrane Central, Google Scholar, and Embase were explored to search for relevant studies from inception to September 2

Ascaris lumbricoides a rare cause gastric perforation: a case report and brief literature review.

Ascaris lumbricoides (AL), a prevalent nematode causing ascariasis, infects millions worldwide, with a higher risk in preschool and school-aged children. Though infections are usually mild, rare and life-threatening complications like gastrointestinal perforation exist. This article documents a case involving a 61-year-old deaf-mute man who presented with a month-long history of epigastric pain accompanied by nausea, anorexia, and constipation. The pain exacerbated, eventually extended to encompass the entire abdomen 4 h prior to being diagnosed with hollow viscus perforation. During the surgi

Ascaris lumbricoides Emerging from a PleurX Draining Catheter: An Unexpected Diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Ascaris lumbricoides is a common helminthic infection characterized by fecal-oral route of transmission. Commonly, it affects the gastrointestinal tract. However, in significantly rare cases, it can affect unexpected body regions, such as biliary tree, pancreas, and the lung. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old female patient underwent PleurX tube insertion due to malignant pleural effusion. On the third week of insertion, she complained of itching and pain at the site of insertion, a grayish-white worm was visualized at the insertion site. Ascaris lumbricoides was identified by mi

Piperazine Use in a Case of Recurrent Entero-biliary Ascariasis.

Roundworm is a significant public health concern in developing countries, including the Indian subcontinent. The clinical presentation of ascariasis infestation varies in practice. It depends on the primarily involved organ and the secondary migration of adult worms. Biliary tract ascariasis infestation should be considered as one of the differential diagnoses for acute abdomen or obstructive biliary pathology. The outcome depends significantly on the chosen therapeutic strategy. We report a case of recurrent entero-biliary ascariasis managed conservatively. A robust knowledge of pharmacology

Hybrid and/or mixed infection by pig and human Ascaris in a Guarani indigenous village in southern Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Ascaris lumbricoides and Ascaris suum are nematode parasites that infect millions of people and pigs worldwide, respectively. Reports of cross-infection and hybridization between the two species has stimulated molecular epidemiological studies of the Ascaris genus. In this study, we evaluated the dynamics of Ascaris transmission between Guarani indigenous schoolchildren, pigs, and the environment of a village in the state of Paraná, southern Brazil. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Parasitological and molecular analyses of fecal samples from humans and pigs, and soil samples from t

Small bowel obstruction due to ascariasis in a child from southern Ethiopia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ascariasis, caused by the parasitic nematode Ascaris lumbricoides, is estimated to affect just under 900 million people globally, the majority of whom are children. Infections are most common in impoverished regions with poor water, sanitation, and hygiene, as transmission is reliant upon the ingestion of eggs excreted in feces found in contaminated soil. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old Black African boy from the Sidama region, southern Ethiopia, presented at Adare General Hospital with a 3-day history of vomiting, abdominal pain, distension, and inability to pass stool or gas. The silent menace: Worm bezoar causing acute intestinal obstruction.

Intestinal obstruction represents a critical surgical emergency with a myriad of potential causes, ranging from mechanical blockages to functional impairments. In contrast to developed nations, where the usual causes of obstruction are adhesions, strictures, and metabolic derangements, infective etiologies, like tuberculosis and parasitic infestations, are more common in developing countries. We present a case report of a 22-year-old man presenting with acute intestinal obstruction due to a massive ascariasis infestation. The patient exhibited classical symptoms of intestinal obstruction, incl

Unusual presentation of Ascaris lumbricoides in the urinary tract: a case report.

Ascaris lumbricoides is one of the most well-known helminthic parasites affecting humans. Ascariasis is prevalent in developing countries where inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene facilitate human-to-human transmission. In this report, we present a case of a 20-year-old male who arrived at the emergency room with severe right flank pain, high-grade fever, and recurrent vomiting. Diagnostic evaluations were conducted, including a complete blood count test, urinalysis, stool analysis, abdominal ultrasound, and CT scan. The final diagnosis was A lumbricoides found in the distal part of the

Evaluation of loop mediated isothermal amplification, quantitative real-time PCR, conventional PCR methods for identifying Ascaris lumbricoides in human stool samples.

Ascariasis, caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, is a widespread parasitic infection. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as microscopy, can miss infections with low worm burdens, leading to false negatives. This study compares four diagnostic methods-microscopy, conventional PCR, real-time PCR, and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP)-for detecting A. lumbricoides in 400 stool samples from children aged 2-16. Microscopy methods (direct wet mount, Kato-Katz, and concentration) detected 17, 23, and 21 positive samples, respectively. Molecular techniques identified 23 positive samples by co

Fatal choking due to aspiration of roundworm during laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Ascariasis is one of the most common parasitic infections in the world. The route of infection is faeco-oral and most occurs in areas with poor hygiene and sanitation. The most common helminth is Ascaris lumbricoides. In our case a 40-year-old female with ascariasis infection underwent an exploratory laparotomy in consequence of post-operative bleeding following a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Post extubation patient suffered cardiac arrest. At autopsy multiple roundworms were found in the oropharynx region, blocking the respiratory passage.

Environmental monitoring for Ascaris egg remediation: a critical review.

Ascariasis affects up to 1.2 billion people globally, with a significant burden in low-income regions. Despite high prevalence and substantial morbidity, existing monitoring and intervention strategies are insufficient due to sample extraction and quantification inaccuracies. This review underscores the need for enhanced environmental monitoring to improve Ascaris egg remediation and reduce disease incidence. We critically reviewed existing environmental monitoring practices and explored advanced technologies like lab-on-a-disk for rapid detection and quantification of Ascaris eggs. A meta-ana

Ascaris lumbricoides: A Clinical Case Report.

This case report follows J.R., a 31-year-old woman who developed ascariasis, an infection caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, a parasitic roundworm, while living in South America. The parasite spreads through ingestion of contaminated soil (hence, it is considered a soil-transmitted helminth), water, and food. Ascariasis affects approximately 1 billion people globally and occurs in rural and impoverished regions where access to sanitation services is limited and personal hygiene is poor. This case report discusses clinical manifestations, diagnostic testing, and treatment of ascariasis, as well as

Identification of immunogenic proteins of Ascaris lung stage larvae through immunoproteomics: towards recombinant-based serodiagnostic assays for humans and pigs.

Soil-transmitted helminthiases are recognised by the World Health Organization as one of the 20 neglected tropical diseases, primarily affecting communities with socioeconomic disadvantages in tropical and subtropical regions. Of the four soil-transmitted helminths, Ascaris stands out as the most widespread, affecting more than 700 million people globally. Today, the diagnostic standard for ascariasis is based on microscopic examination of stool, which faces important limitations. Although serological diagnosis is a promising alternative, the current landscape of well-validated commercial sero
