Burst abdomen in a case of fatal high-voltage electrocution: A rare entity.

High-voltage electrocution (>1000 volts) commonly presents with flash burns, flame burns, and injuries due to the entry and exit of current in the body. Sometimes, unusual injuries are encountered in high-voltage electrocution. A burst abdomen with perforation of the gastrointestinal tract is a rare entity to be seen in cases of electrocution because of its large surface area and low resistance. The case report enlightens a fatal electrocution in an occupational setting where a 19-year-old young laborer sustained a fatal electrocution after a 15-foot metallic ladder inadvertently contacted ove

Evaluation of Injuries Caused by Sharp Objects in Different Suicide Cases.

BACKGROUND: Suicide, defined as the act of taking one's own life, is a common cause of death worldwide, with more than 720,000 people dying by suicide each year. However, suicide by sharp objects is relatively rare, accounting for only a small percentage of all cases. In some cases, self-inflicted injuries may be mistaken for other causes, such as assault or accidental trauma. The mortality rate from self-inflicted injuries with sharp objects is low, and most such suicide attempts do not lead to death. The low fatality rate associated with self-inflicted sharp force injuries may prompt the use

A rare case of planned complex suicide involving multiple methods: forensic reconstruction and interpretive challenges.

Planned complex suicides that combine multiple mechanisms pose substantial challenges for medicolegal reconstruction. We report a rare case of a 27-year-old man who simultaneously employed four methods: plastic-bag asphyxia with a continuous natural-gas supply (stove hose taped to bag tubing), environmental sealing of door seams with adhesive tape, rodenticide ingestion, and superficial incised injuries to the neck and wrist. Scene reconstruction, full autopsy, and comprehensive toxicology established asphyxia from natural-gas inhalation via the plastic-bag apparatus as the cause of death; ant

Fatal Self-Inflicted Chop Wound by a Supari Cutter (Sudi): A Rare Case With Forensic Analysis of Wound Patterns and Weapon Biomechanics.

Chop wounds on the body, produced by the forceful impact of a heavy swinging blade, are conventionally considered telltale signs of homicide in forensic pathology, as a person cannot plausibly inflict such a wound upon themselves, since it appears to demand the momentum and arc of another individual's swinging arm. Existing literature has extensively documented suicidal deaths involving incised and stab wounds, where the mechanics of a short blade wielded by the victim's own hand are well established and readily accepted. Until now, however, no prior study has documented such a case of suicide

Prevalence of vestibulo-ocular reflex dysfunction in people with neurological disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neurological disorders, a leading cause of global disability, often cause debilitating dizziness and imbalance. While subjective symptoms are well-documented, the actual prevalence of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) dysfunction in patients with central nervous system (CNS) damage remains unclear due to inconsistent primary studies. This research aims to determine the prevalence of VOR gain dysfunction, as measured by the video Head Impulse Test (vHIT), across neurological disorders. METHODS: Our systematic review searched MEDLINE, CENTRAL, CINAHL, Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the

Computed tomography angiography-guided conservative management of a penetrating ballistic neck injury involving the carotid sheath: A case report.

Penetrating ballistic neck injury carries a high risk of vascular injury, particularly to the common carotid artery (CCA), due to its superficial location and critical role in cerebral perfusion. While surgical intervention is indicated in the presence of "hard signs" of vascular injury, the role of conservative management in asymptomatic patients remains debated. We report the case of a 45-year-old male who sustained a penetrating ballistic injury while seated and cleaning his 5-shot hunting rifle (shotgun). The accidental discharge occurred at less than 1 meter, producing a short-range, low-

Characterization of Staphylococci colonizing healthy equine skin: antibiotic resistance, virulence factors, and biofilm formation.

In order to develop non-antibiotic therapies to treat dermatological diseases it is urgent to spread knowledge on composition and properties of skin bacteria in healthy animals. Since horses are popular companions of humans, it is necessary to know what risk skin bacteria pose to humans. Therefore the aim of this work was to analyse species composition of staphylococci isolated from skin swabs of 50 healthy horses using MALDI-TOF (Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight) spectrometry and to characterize their virulence properties. Swabs were collected from five body areas (n

Transoral Robotic-Assisted Removal of a Submucosal Pyriform Sinus Foreign Body.

BACKGROUND: Submucosal foreign bodies of the medial pyriform sinus represent a challenge given limited visualization and difficult retraction with endoscopic approaches, and risk of injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve with open approaches. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) offers improved visualization and multiple working arms to facilitate retraction. We present a novel case utilizing the Da Vinci SP system for removal of an embedded fishbone of the medial pyriform sinus. RESULTS: An 84-year-old woman presented with five days of odynophagia and globus sensation after swallowing a fish bo

An unsuspected extracranial internal carotid pseudoaneurysm following dog bites: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) pseudoaneurysm is a rare condition that can be caused either by penetrating or blunt trauma, including dog bites, which is an uncommon occurrence. Together with the possibility of no symptoms or nonspecific ones such as cervical pain, hematoma, swelling, or mass, considering ICA pseudoaneurysm following a dog attack is of paramount importance to avoid life-threatening complications. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a rare case of a 17-year-old male with a history of dog bites three months prior, who presented to the emergency department with

Medial Femoral Condyle Free Flap: A Systematic Review and Proportional Meta-analysis of Applications and Surgical Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Recalcitrant bone nonunion and osseous defect treatment is challenging and often requires vascularized bone transfer. The medial femoral condyle flap has become an increasingly popular option for reconstruction. The study aims at reviewing its different applications and synthesizing its surgical outcomes. METHOD: A systematic review including all studies assessing surgical outcomes of free medial femoral condyle flap for bone reconstruction in adults was conducted on January 31, 2023. Flap failure and postoperative complications were synthesized with a proportional meta-analysis.

Asphyxia with a blunt instrument: which forensic evidence to use in complex cases of murder.

BACKGROUND: The blunt injuries may be heterogeneous. Due to the diversity, it is often difficult to establish the type of weapon used. Particular attention must be paid to the circumstantial data and previous diseases because the injuries often could not correspond to the presumed instruments used. CASE REPORT: A man was found dead in his bedroom wearing pajamas. On the bed there was a blanket with visible traces of blood, which had dried. There were around 10 dogs in the house, poor hygienic and sanitary conditions, widespread excrements and unbreathable air. Testimonies from general practit

Puncture Capsulotomy Technique During Hip Arthroscopy.

BACKGROUND: A number of techniques have been described to enter the capsule and gain access to the hip joint during hip arthroscopy1,2. Among these, the interportal and T-capsulotomies are the most commonly utilized; however, these approaches transect the iliofemoral ligament, which normally resists anterior subluxation and stabilizes extension3. Thus, these approaches may introduce capsuloligamentous instability1,4-7 and have been associated with complications such as dislocation, postoperative pain, microinstability, seroma, and heterotopic ossification5,8-12. Although prior literature has d

Navigating the void: outcomes and adaptations during parotid surgery in the absence of posterior belly of digastric muscle.

It is well known that the digastric posterior belly is one of the essential landmarks for facial nerve identification during parotid surgery. While there were multiple reports about variations of the digastric anterior belly, only a few anatomical variations of the posterior belly of the digastric muscle have been described. In this article, we describe an anatomical variation of the posterior belly of digastric muscle found during superficial parotidectomy of a patient with pleomorphic adenoma. This anatomical variation also led to an anatomical variation in the position of the facial nerve. To

SCPNB is an adjuvant to local anaesthesia for maxillofacial surgical practice.

The superficial cervical plexus nerve block [SCPNB] procedure is frequently used throughout head and neck surgery because it is simple to learn and has a low rate of complications. The investigation of this method might produce superior outcomes in treating frequent maxillofacial disorders including mandibular fractures and infections of the odontogenic region. The SCPNB is known to play a part in the medical evacuation of head and neck abscesses, the excision of superficial diseases in the perimandibular region, and the therapy of mandibular fracture, despite the dearth of research in this ar

PD-1 blockade combined with decitabine to treat refractory peripheral T-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified: A case report and review of literature.

Peripheral T-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS) is a highly aggressive lymphoma with a poor response to chemotherapy, frequent relapses, low overall survival, and poor prognosis, and is the most common form of PTCL. For relapsed/refractory (R/R) PTCLs, the efficacy of traditional chemotherapy is even worse, so clinical trials and new drugs become their therapeutic hope. The patient was a 43-year-old woman who complained of enlarged superficial lymph nodes (submandibular, neck, axillary, epitrochlear, and groin) and progressive aggravation of skin lesions, facial and limb edema, a
