Small bowel volvulus secondary to ascariasis in a 7-year-old boy: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Ascariasis, caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, is the most common soil-transmitted helminth infection worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. While most cases remain asymptomatic, heavy worm infestations may lead to severe complications, including bowel obstruction. Small bowel volvulus secondary to ascariasis is exceedingly rare and potentially fatal, especially in children. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 7-year-old boy from rural Ethiopia who presented with acute abdominal pain, distension, and vomiting. Examination revealed peritonitis and imagin

A case report of acute liver failure caused by biliary ascariasis in children.

Most patients with biliary ascariasis present with acute abdominal pain and biliary colic. Typically, conservative treatment involving deworming agents is employed. However, for those who do not respond to pharmacological therapy, endoscopic or surgical intervention becomes necessary. Generally, the mortality rate is low, and the prognosis is favorable. This case describes a pediatric patient exhibiting symptoms of intestinal disease, including upper abdominal pain and jaundice, resulting from extrahepatic biliary tract obstruction caused by roundworms. This condition subsequently led to compl

Small bowel obstruction due to Ascaris lumbricoides in a child: A case report from Northwest Ethiopia.

Ascaris lumbricoides is the most common soil-transmitted helminth affecting humans, predominantly in low-income countries. Although usually asymptomatic, heavy infestation can lead to serious complications such as intestinal obstruction, particularly in children whose narrower intestinal lumen predisposes them to luminal blockage by worm boluses. A 6-year-old male child presented to the surgical emergency department of Tibebe Ghion Specialized Teaching Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia, with 3 days of severe crampy, centrally located abdominal pain and frequent vomiting. Examination revealed classi

Gastrointestinal Ascariasis: Unusual Presentation in 2 Cases.

Ascariasis is a helminthic infection caused by the nematode Ascaris lumbricoides and remains the most prevalent helminth infection worldwide. Although typically asymptomatic or limited to intestinal symptoms, intestinal ascariasis can present unusually as demonstrated in these two cases. The first case involves a 73-year-old male who was being treated for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) - induced upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) and was incidentally found to harbor Ascaris worms in the duodenum during endoscopy. The second case describes a 63-year-old male with decompensated

Oral gastrografin protocol resolves worm-induced small bowel obstruction in children: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Worm-induced small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common pediatric surgical problem in endemic regions, but the role of oral Gastrografin in this setting remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study (December 2022–December 2024) at a single center in Pakistan. Children aged 5–18 years with radiological and clinical evidence of uncomplicated Ascaris-related SBO were included. Exclusions were complicated obstruction, rectal bleeding, hypersensitivity to Gastrografin, or refusal to participate. Participants received either standard conservative management (nil per o

Surgical decision-making in pediatric intestinal ascariasis: experience from an endemic region.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal ascariasis is the leading cause of pediatric intestinal obstruction in endemic regions. This study aimed to analyze the clinical presentation, diagnostic accuracy, and outcomes of conservative and surgical management of ascariasis-induced intestinal obstruction in children. METHODS: Children aged 2-16 years who presented with intestinal obstruction between May 2022 and May 2025 were prospectively evaluated. Patients with intestinal ascariasis confirmed as the cause of obstruction were included, whereas those with concomitant adhesions, intussusception, or other etiologi

Lactoferrin concentration in breast milk during the first postpartum year in Lima Norte, Peru.

Bile duct injuries (BDI) tend to be more complex in laparoscopic than in open cholecystectomy procedures, and frequently involve young adults with benign pathologies. The ultimate consequence may be a liver transplantation (LT), making this situation one of the most rare transplant indications. Fatal post-transplant outcome is extreme infrequently reported. Aim of this study is to report on our single-case experience and to review the literature concerning lethal outcome after LT for major BDI following cholecystectomy. A 36-year old obese caucasian woman underwent a laparoscopic cholecystecto

An Ascaris lumbricoides infection diagnosed by colonoscopy: A case report and a brief literature review.

BACKGROUND: Ascaris lumbricoides is a nematode that parasitizes the human gastrointestinal tract, and it is the cause of the most common helminthic infections worldwide. It predominates in areas of poor sanitation. Early diagnosis of this intestinal infection is pivotal to avoid its severe and lethal complications such as gut obstruction, volvulus, and perforation. CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old Caucasian female was admitted to the Operational Unit of Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgery with abdominal pain, in combination with nausea and vomiting for 2 months. The woman underwent a colonoscopy an

Small bowel obstruction due to ascariasis in a child from southern Ethiopia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ascariasis, caused by the parasitic nematode Ascaris lumbricoides, is estimated to affect just under 900 million people globally, the majority of whom are children. Infections are most common in impoverished regions with poor water, sanitation, and hygiene, as transmission is reliant upon the ingestion of eggs excreted in feces found in contaminated soil. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old Black African boy from the Sidama region, southern Ethiopia, presented at Adare General Hospital with a 3-day history of vomiting, abdominal pain, distension, and inability to pass stool or gas. Intestinal obstruction due to Ascaris lumbricoides in child: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ascariasis in humans is one of the most significant neglected tropical diseases. Usually, the manifestation of ascariasis may vary in each case. In severe cases, ascariasis may lead to intestinal obstruction or perforation of the intestine due to the large number of worms. Here, we report a case of intestinal obstruction due to A. lumbricoides in a 3-year-old boy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old Maduranese boy was admitted to the pediatric division with constipation and an enlarged abdomen. During a day of in-hospital observation, the patient vomited worms, which were then identif

Ileal perforation due to Ascaris lumbricoides: an incidental finding in ileostomy complicated by peritonitis.

Ascariasis, caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, is the most common helminthic infection worldwide, mainly in developing countries. Although intestinal obstruction is its most frequent complication, intestinal perforation with peritonitis is rare and life-threatening. A 45-year-old woman from a rural area presented with cramping abdominal pain, intermittent fever, and asthenia for 3 months. Emergency laparotomy revealed generalized peritonitis due to ileal perforation, managed with ileal resection and ileostomy. Postoperative complications included respiratory failure, septic shock, and three reope

Ascaris Peritonitis in a Pediatric Patient With Typhoid Fever.

Intestinal infestation with ascaris worms is very common worldwide and usually causes minimal or no abdominal symptoms. Severe abdominal complications such as bowel obstruction may occur, but bowel perforation from ascariasis is rare. We present a case of a seven-year-old boy who initially presented with typhoid fever and then developed ascaris peritonitis requiring emergent surgery. We discuss preoperative diagnosis and perioperative management, as well as the purported mechanisms of coinfection with typhoid fever and ascariasis that can lead to small bowel perforation.

Gallbladder ascariasis complicated by chronic eosinophilic cholecystitis in a one-year-old infant: A case report.

INTRODUCTION & IMPORTANCE: Ascaris lumbricoides is one of the most prevalent soil-transmitted helminths, affecting up to 1.2 billion people worldwide. Although it mainly inhabits the intestine, migration to the biliary system can occur. Gallbladder involvement is exceptionally rare, particularly in children. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a one-year-old male with recurrent fever, anorexia, vomiting, and weight loss for three months. Past history included neonatal intensive care for hypoplastic lungs, anemia, and sepsis. Examination revealed mild epigastric and right hypochondrial tenderness. La

Echoes from Macondo: managing disseminated ascariasis with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy. A case report.

Ascaris lumbricoides is one of the most prevalent helminthic infections worldwide, yet disseminated disease is rare. In resource-limited settings, delayed diagnosis can lead to severe complications, including multiorgan dysfunction and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). There are only sporadic case reports describing the management of this entity with mechanical circulatory support such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). We report the case of a previously healthy 2-year-old girl from rural Colombia with a one-month history of abdominal pain and diarrhea. Stool examination

Ascariasis: A common disease with uncommon presentation in a resource limited setting. A case report.

Ascaris-induced intestinal obstruction is a rare complication primarily seen in children in areas with a high prevalence of worm infestations. It can occur through 2 mechanisms: immune-mediated reactions releasing neurotoxins that cause contractions and inflammation in the small intestine (aperistalsis), or mechanical obstruction by adult worms, commonly at the ileocecal valve. Partial obstructions are managed conservatively, while complete obstructions often require surgical intervention. In a recent case, a 19-year-old male presented with persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, and inability to
