Ascariasis is a common helminthic infection, especially in India. Though it is known to inhabit the jejunum of the small intestine, it may invade the hepato-biliary and pancreatic ducts, causing a spectrum of clinical manifestations. We present a case of idiopathic recurrent acute pancreatitis in a 61-year-old female patient who was later diagnosed with pancreatic ascariasis using endoscopic ultrasound. This emphasizes the possibility of ascariasis as one of the causes of acute pancreatitis and the use of endoscopic ultrasound as an initial diagnostic tool for the evaluation of idiopathic acut

Ascariasis is a prevalent intestinal helminthic infection caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, commonly known as roundworm. While the disease may remain asymptomatic when the parasites are confined to the intestinal lumen of the small bowel, symptoms and complications can arise when the helminths invade the biliary tree or pancreatic ducts. In cases of severe infection, a mass of roundworms can lead to intestinal complications, such as bowel obstruction. The morphological identification of Ascaris by multimodality imaging techniques plays a crucial role in the diagnosis, as well as in the monitorin

A five-year-old male presented with small bowel obstruction and a worm bolus on a plain abdominal radiograph. Peritonism and acidosis prompted laparotomy after a short period of resuscitation. At surgery a worm bolus had caused a small bowel volvulus with a segment of necrosis that was successfully managed by detorsion and resection. This highlights that though ascaris lumbricoides, a common parasite in impoverished communities, has many mild manifestations the most life-threatening complication is volvulus. Hence when worm bolus is suspected vigilant observation to detect sepsis, acidosis and

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between helminth infections and celiac disease (CeD), examining various demographic and clinical factors in CeD cases compared to controls.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control study utilizing Leumit Health Care Services' electronic health records. The study encompassed individuals with CeD and a matched control group. We analyzed demographic and clinical characteristics, examining their association with helminth infections.
RESULTS: We observed CeD cases and controls had similar mean ages (17.8 years vs. 18

UNLABELLED: Ascaris lumbricoides is an infestation that affects approximately one-seventh of the world's population. Ascaris lumbricoides is a common inhabitant of the intestines of people with low-socioeconomic incomes, especially in underdeveloped countries of the world. Ascaris lumbricoides infestation is more prone to infestation with serious complications such as intestinal obstruction, volvulus, intussusception, and intestinal necrosis at higher rates in children than in adults.
CASE PRESENTATION: The authors present here two cases of small bowel obstruction caused by massive Ascaris lu

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ascariasis is a helminthic infection of humans caused by Ascaris lumbricoides. Pediatric patients infected with Ascaris can develop multiple complications including appendicitis, gastrointestinal bleeding, hepatobiliary disease like cholangitis or obstructive jaundice, intussusception, and bowel obstruction among others. Ascaris is a rare cause of intestinal perforation even in endemic areas.

The aberrant migration of Ascaris lumbricoides may cause extra-intestinal ascariasis (EIA) involving hepato-biliary-pancreatic (HBP) or other extra-gastro-intestinal (EGI) organs. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to study the risk factors and clinical presentations of EIA, and differences in HBP and EGI ascariasis. Medline, Web of Science and Embase were searched for cases of EIA in the English language from India. From 1204 articles, 86 studies (105 cases) were included. The majority of the cases involved the HBP system (78%). Among HBP ascariasis, the most commonly involved

The history of ascariasis is very old. It is endemic in various parts of Bangladesh. Hepatobiliary ascariasis is a well-known complication of the intestinal ascariasis. Although cosmopolitan, it predominantly affects people in Asia, Africa, and South America. This was a prospective observational study conducted from July to December 2014 to explore the short term outcome of therapeutic ERCP in the treatment of biliary ascariasis in a tertiary care hospital of Bangladesh. A total of 60 cases of biliary ascariasis were selected conveniently in this study. Data were collected by face-to-face inte

Appendicitis is one of the most common conditions that leads to an acute abdomen. Surgical management is the gold standard for therapy. The main cause of appendicitis is an obstruction in the appendicular lumen. Intestinal ascariasis infection is undoubtedly one of the least frequent. We present a female patient with acute appendicitis resulting from Ascaris lumbricoides as an incidental intraoperative diagnosis.

Ascariasis lumbricoides is a roundworm that causes one of the most common soil-transmitted helminth infections worldwide. Ascariasis is typically found in the jejunum and transmitted through the intake of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs through food and water. Initially, ascariasis can cause pulmonary symptoms during the first 6-8 weeks of ingestion and can progress to serious complications of intestinal obstruction and hepatobiliary manifestations. Biliary ascariasis is a complication of ascariasis migration from the jejunum to the hepatobiliary tree and can present with a variety of symptoms rangi

BACKGROUND: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is an autonomic nervous system disorder causing an abnormal cardiovascular response to upright posture. It affects around 0.2% of the population, most commonly women aged 13 to 50 years. POTS can be debilitating; prolonged episodes of pre-syncope and fatigue can severely affect activities of daily living and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Medical treatment is limited and not supported by randomised controlled trial (RCT) evidence. Lifestyle interventions are first-line treatment, including increased fluid and salt intake, co

Helminthic infections are widely prevalent in resource-poor countries. Tuberculosis, a disease contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality in endemic areas, often co-exists with helminthic infections. Poor living standards predispose to both of them. Moreover, untreated helminthic infection enhances the deleterious impact of tuberculosis, largely through immunological alteration. We are reporting the case of a 22-year-old male who presented with a month-long history of abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever and cough complicated by hemoptysis, along with an episode of the passage of

Ascariasis is one of the common diseases in human beings worldwide. Most cases are asymptomatic. However, the high parasitic load can present with organ-specific symptoms due to the migration of worms to various regions of the body such as the lungs, nasal cavity, oral cavity, and biliary system, and sometimes with surgical emergencies like intestinal and biliary tree obstruction. Treatment modalities depend on the presentation and the complication associated with it. Uncomplicated cases can be initially managed conservatively and followed up subsequently. However, most cases of biliary ascari

INTRODUCTION: Ascaris in urinary bladder is an extremely rare phenomenon. It may occur after fistula formation between urinary and gastrointestinal tract or by retrograde migration of adult worm, and is associated with complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old Amhara woman from rural northwest Ethiopia presented with a complaint of difficulty to fully evacuate her bladder of 1 year duration. Ultrasonography showed thickened bladder wall with echo debris. There were also thickened bowel and fluid-filled loops of intestine adjacent to urinary bladder. On cystoscopy examination, there was
