Appendiceal ascariasis in children.

BACKGROUND: The propensity of Ascaris lumbricoides to wander leads to varied surgical complications in the abdomen. Wandering A lumbricoides may sometimes reach the vermiform appendix and its presence there may remain silent or incite pathology. Our aim was to study ascariadial appendicitis. METHODS: Over a period of 3 years, we identified children who were found to have appendiceal ascariasis during surgery for different intestinal complications due to ascariasis. We studied the relationship between ascariasis and its lodgement inside the vermiform appendix in these patients. No preoperative

Intestinal ascariasis in children.

BACKGROUND: Ascariasis is a staggering health problem commonly seen in children of endemic areas. In the abdomen, ascaris lumbricoides can cause a myriad of surgical complications. Intestinal obstruction by ascaris lumbricoides is commonly seen in children. Most cases are managed conservatively. The purpose was to study the clinical presentation and management of symptomatic intestinal ascariasis in children. METHODS: A 3-year study was performed from April 2006 to April 2009 of pediatric-age patients who had symptomatic intestinal ascariasis. All patients had detailed clinical history, exami

Management of biliary ascariasis in children living in an endemic area.

BACKGROUND: One quarter of the world's population is known to be infected with ascariasis. It is endemic in various parts of the Indian subcontinent with a high incidence in the Kashmir valley. Although intestinal obstruction is the commonest complication of ascariasis in children, biliary ascariasis remains the second most common complication. We aimed to study the various types of clinical presentations, complications and different diagnostic tools and to assess various options for the management of biliary ascariasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one cases of ultrasound documented hepatobi

[Coincidental finding of biliary ascariasis].

We describe a case of biliary ascariasis in a 27-year-old Philippine au-pair with recurrent upper abdominal pain. Hepatobiliary ascariasis is rarely seen in non-endemic areas. The diagnosis is important because severe complications can occur. If migrated into the biliary tree, it is recommended to perform endoscopic extraction combined with antihelmintic therapy. In severe cases, the recommendation is laparoscopic cholecystectomy and peroperative exploration of the common hepatic duct.

Worms and war: a case report of trauma and tropical disease intersecting.

We report a case of heavy intestinal infestation with Ascaris lumbricoides complicating the surgical management of a gunshot injury to the abdomen. Co-existent traumatic and infectious pathologies in this case highlight the complex burden of illness among children living in areas of violent conflict, with clinical relevance to trauma surgeons in the tropics.

Ascariasis as a cause of recurrent abdominal pain.

Ascariasis is the most common helminthic infection in developing countries. It may cause chronic abdominal pain, tenderness and bloating. Our aim is to report a case of acute episodic abdominal pain and pancreatitis associated with ascariasis. We report a 59-year-old female patient who was admitted for acute abdominal pain, having had several previous similar events before one of them was diagnosed as acute idiopathic pancreatitis. On admission, her physical exam was normal. Laboratory results showed hemoglobin 12.2 g/dL, white blood cell count 11 900 cells/mm(3), eosinophils 420 cells/mm(3),

Ascaris through a chest tube: a rare presentation.

A rare case of an Ascaris worm emerging through an intercostal chest tube is reported here because of its unusual presentation. A five-year-old male child had a liver abscess, which had ruptured into the right pleural cavity. An intercostal chest tube was inserted for right pleural effusion. On the 5th postoperative day, a 7 cm long worm was noticed emerging through the chest tube. Ascaris lumbricoides infestation can lead to serious complications because of the mobility of the worms. Though complications such as intestinal obstruction, volvulus, gangrene, pancreatitis, biliary obstruction, ch

Encountering Meckel's diverticulum in emergency surgery for ascaridial intestinal obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract. In children with intestinal ascariasis, the diverticulum remains asymptomatic or rarely the Ascaris lumbricoides may lead to its complications in the presence of massive intestinal roundworm load. Given that preoperative diagnosis is seldom carried out, when Meckel's diverticulum is found at laparotomy for obstructive intestinal complications of roundworm, the diverticulum should be removed as complications may occur at any time. The aim of this study was to describe the findings of concomita

Mechanical small bowel obstruction in children at a tertiary care centre in Kashmir.

BACKGROUND: Small bowel obstruction is the commonest surgical emergency encountered in childhood. We observed that intestinal obstruction caused by ascariasis is one of the leading causes of death in our children and consumes a major portion of our hospital resources. Other causes include intussusception, adhesions, volvulus, hernias, and worm obstruction. The aim of this study was to analyze the presentation, diagnosis, management of mechanical bowel and complication of obstruction in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study was conducted from Jan 2005 to Dec 2007 in the Department of Pedia

Hypokalemic paralysis following severe vomiting in a child with intestinal obstruction due to round worms.

Ascariasis is one of the most common helminthic infestations in humans. Massive infestation can give rise to serious complications such as intestinal obstruction. We present a 4-year-old boy, who presented with acute flaccid quadriparesis due to the hypokalemic alkalosis induced by severe vomiting. Severe vomiting was due to intestinal obstruction caused by round worms.

Management algorithm for intestinal obstruction due to ascariasis: a case report and review of the literature.

Ascaris lumbricoides is the largest and most prevalent of the human helminths. Ascariasis causes a unique type of intestinal obstruction with specific problems, having high morbidity and mortality. There is no management algorithm available in the literature to treat such cases. We aimed in this study to develop an algorithm for the management of intestinal obstruction due to ascariasis. A medline search of the English literature on the management of intestinal obstruction due to ascariasis was performed. Management of one of our patients with intestinal obstruction due to ascariasis is presen

[Case report: an intestinal obstruction due to ascariasis].

Ascaris lumbricoides (A. lumbricoides) with which one billion people around the world is infected is also widely seen in Turkey. This case report presents an ascariasis infection which displayed typical radiological findings in Kocaeli, a non-endemic region of Turkey. The patient was admitted to hospital with symptoms of heavy abdominal pain, nausea-vomiting and weakness. The symptoms had started weakly three weeks earlier and the patient had applied to a private health care center. After a through examination with several appropriate tests including a barium small-bowel enema, a morphological

Death due to an unrecognized ascariasis infestation: two medicolegal autopsy cases.

Two unusual autopsy cases of fatal Ascaris infection have been presented. The first case presents lethal diffuse peritonitis due to duodenal rupture caused by the presence of parasitic Ascaris worm in gastrointestinal tract of 2.5-year-old child. The second one is a case of subacute asphyxia caused by obturation of upper respiratory tract by a large number of adult Ascaris roundworms. General economic crisis and inefficient medical service make possible spreading of almost eradicated disease, thus the possibility of the most serious complications of this helminthiasis must not be forgotten.

Ascaris lumbricoides-induced acute pancreatitis: diagnosis during EUS for a suspected small pancreatic tumor.

CONTEXT: Ascaris lumbricoides is the second most common intestinal parasite world-wide and, although the infection can be asymptomatic, in some cases it can present with complications, such as acute pancreatitis. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 37-year-old man, with a history of travelling in Eastern countries who presented with Ascaris lumbricoides-induced acute pancreatitis mimicking a small pancreatic cancer, diagnosed during an upper EUS. The endoscopy revealeda roundworm floating in the duodenum; its endoultrasonographic appearance showed a diffuse inhomogeneous pattern, with hypo
