Background: Hand fractures and dislocations are common injuries in the pediatric population. This study aims to characterize the pediatric hand injuries that required closed reduction and identify those that required multiple reduction attempts. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out in patients younger than 18 years of age with hand fractures or dislocations who underwent closed reduction in the emergency department (ED). Patients who ultimately required surgical reduction and fixation were not included. Results: Of the 310 hand injuries identified, 148 (114 fractures and 34 di

INTRODUCTION: Axillo-subclavian arterial injuries are generally associated with penetrating trauma. On rare occasion, blunt mechanisms can cause these injuries in the setting of high-energy trauma, humeral head or neck fractures, and severe glenohumeral dislocations. Glenohumeral dislocations sustained from ground-level falls are generally reduced in the emergency department without associated morbidity.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 80-year-old woman presented with an inferior glenohumeral dislocation after a ground-level fall that was found to be complicated by axillary dissection, pseudoaneurys

In some rare cases of hanging, the so-called 'hangman's fracture' is observed. This occurs when a fall from height is associated with hanging, e.g. capital executions. We describe the case of an 81-year-old man who committed suicide by jumping off a bridge, with a rope wrapped around his neck. The combination of hanging and falling caused a series of bone fractures to the cervical spine and the hyoid bone, leading to dislocation of the vertebral column and multiple bone fragments, producing peculiar patterns. Computed tomography also identified a transverse full-thickness fracture of the dens,

Over time, what was considered urgent or emergent in orthopaedic trauma has been revisited, and as awareness of factors associated with outcomes has increased, priorities have changed. There are multiple procedures performed urgently in the belief that early intervention allowed for better outcomes for the injury and the patient. Classic examples of conditions for which urgent intervention has been implemented include open fractures, femoral neck fractures in the young adult, talus fractures, and compartment syndrome. All of these conditions are considered nonurgent except for compartment synd

BACKGROUND: Atlanto-occipital dislocation is a rare and severe injury of the upper spine associated with a very poor prognosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 59-year-old European man who suffered from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest following a motor vehicle accident. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was initiated immediately by bystanders and continued by emergency medical services. After 30 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation with a total of five shocks following initial ventricular fibrillation, return of spontaneous circulation was achieved. An electrocardiogram recorded aft

OBJECTIVE: Craniovertebral junctional anomalies constitute a technical challenge. Surgical opening of atlantoaxial joint region is a complex procedure especially in patients with nuchal deformity like basilar invagination. This region has actually very complicated anatomical and functional characteristics, including multiple joints providing extension, flexion, and wide rotation. In fact, it is also a bottleneck region where bones, neural structures, and blood vessels are located. Stabilization surgery regarding this region should consider the fact that the area exposes excessive and life-long

Council Regulation (EC) no. 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing restricts the use of manual cervical dislocation in poultry on farms in the European Union (EU) to birds weighing up to 3 kg and 70 birds per person per day. However, few studies have examined whether repeated application of manual cervical dislocation has welfare implications and whether these are dependent on individual operator skill or susceptibility to fatigue. We investigated the effects of repeated application (100 birds at a fixed killing rate of 1 bird per 2 min) and multiple operators on two met

The pathology in congenital atlantoaxial instability is usually in C1-2 joints. Addressing the joints appears to be the most rationale approach. The joints are usually approached posteriorly, manipulated, and fused. Understanding the normal and abnormal anatomy is important. Normally, the third segment of the vertebral artery courses lateral to the C1-2 joint. However, in about 20% of the cases with complex congenital craniovertberal junction anomalies the artery crosses the joint posteriorly. The artery in such cases may be injured while joint manipulation and instrumentation with disastrous

OBJECTIVE: Congenital atlanto-axial dislocation (CAAD) often manifests in younger age group. Softer bones, deformed joints and the concern of fusing multiple segments in growing age set apart this subset of patients from adults. Objectives of this manuscript are to discuss the challenges faced and subsequent solutions during multiplanar realignment and fusion (short segment) of C1-2 joints through a direct posterior approach in pediatric CAAD.
PATIENTS & METHODS: 56 pediatric patients with CAAD were operated through a direct posterior approach in the last 4 years. The joints were drilled and

BACKGROUND: Skeletal and soft tissue damage are often associated with unilateral facet dislocations, which undoubtedly lead to instability of the spine and further increase difficulties in cervical reduction. This type of irreducible facet dislocation is usually accompanied with potential catastrophic consequences including neurological deficit and severe disability. Therefore, a consistent and evidence-based treatment plan is imperative.
CASE PRESENTATION: The literature regarding the management of traumatic unilateral locked cervical facet dislocations was reviewed. Two patient cases (a 30-
