In order to increase the intestinal absorption of iron whilst simultaneously minimising the side-effects and thus increasing compliance, once- or twice-weekly, instead of daily, iron supplementation has been widely recommended. In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study in western Kenya, a tablet of ferrous dextran (containing 60 mg elemental iron) or an identical-looking placebo tablet was provided twice-weekly for 12 months to each child or adult investigated. At baseline each subject had a moderately low blood concentration of haemoglobin (Hb). Initial Hb and serum ferritin (SF

BACKGROUND: Ascariasis and HIV/AIDS are often co-endemic under conditions of poverty in South Africa; and discordant immune responses to the respective infections could theoretically be affecting the epidemic of HIV/AIDS in various ways. It is well-known that sensitisation to helminthic antigens can aggravate or ameliorate several non-helminthic diseases and impair immunisation against cholera, tetanus and tuberculosis. The human genotype can influence immune responses to Ascaris strongly. With these factors in mind, we have started to document the extent of long-term exposure to Ascaris and o

It has recently been suggested that helminth infections may adversely influence susceptibility to other infections, including malaria. To investigate this hypothesis in a sub-Saharan African setting, surveys of helminth infections were conducted in 2003 among individuals who had been under weekly active case detection for clinical malaria during the preceding 18 months in four villages in Kabale District, southwest Uganda. Overall, 47.3% of individuals had at least one intestinal nematode species infection: hookworm, Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura were detected in 32.1, 17.4 and

We conducted a longitudinal study among 827 pregnant women in Nyanza Province, western Kenya, to determine the effect of earth-eating on geohelminth reinfection after treatment. The women were recruited at a gestational age of 14-24 weeks (median: 17) and followed up to 6 months postpartum. The median age was 23 (range: 14-47) years, the median parity 2 (range: 0-11). After deworming with mebendazole (500 mg, single dose) of those found infected at 32 weeks gestation, 700 women were uninfected with Ascaris lumbricoides, 670 with Trichuris trichiura and 479 with hookworm. At delivery, 11.2%, 4.

UNLABELLED: A number of food- and waterborne parasitic diseases that are common in the United States can adversely impact women during pregnancy. Therapeutic considerations during pregnancy for these diseases are reviewed. Also, the level of knowledge of obstetrician-gynecologists about diagnosis and treatment of these diseases (toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, amebiasis, cyclosporiasis, trichinellosis, ascariasis, and taeniasis) was estimated by means of a questionnaire developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American College of Obstetricians and

BACKGROUND: Post-cholecystectomy syndrome encompasses numerous biliary, pancreatic and other entities. Biliary ascariasis is a common cause of adult biliary disease in an endemic area. Post-cholecystectomy biliary ascariasis, a cause of post- cholecystectomy syndrome although not yet defined is frequently seen in this part of the world.
METHOD: Between Jan. 1990 and Jan. 2001, 104 cases of post-cholecystectomy biliary ascariasis were seen. Ultrasonography was found to be an excellent tool for diagnosing and monitoring of the worms inside the biliary tract. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancr

AIM OF THE STUDY: To indicate options in a surgical university team in Vietnam for treatment of ascaris-induced acute pancreatitis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 1998 to April 2001, 33 patients (mean age 46 years) were admitted with a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis based on elevated serum amylase in 29 patients (88%), and elevated urinary amylase in all patients and a compatible clinical picture. The pancreatic ultrasonography was abnormal in 79% of cases. Biliary and pancreatic ultrasonography shown ascaris in 31 patients (94%). In other two patients ascaris was detected with duodenal

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the complications of colostomy and its closure in infants and children.
METHODS: One hundred forty-six colostomies were performed in 86 neonates, 23 infants, and 37 children older than 1 year. These children underwent colostomies for anorectal malformation (84), Hirschsprung's disease (47), and other miscellaneous (15) conditions like colonic atresia, volvulus, rectal tuberculosis, traumatic rectal perforation, and intestinal obstruction caused by ascariasis.
RESULTS: Of these, 17 (11.6%) had early complications, and 80 (69.8%) had stomal complications. Three

In human populations, the concomitance of various parasitic infections can induce modifications of the specific immune response to each pathogen and thus induce changes in their clinical expression. Several studies, however, have produced conflicting results. To study the hypothesis that there is an association between helminthiasis and the occurrence of severe malaria a prospective case-control study was carried out in a rural zone of Senegal where 105 presumptive severe malaria attacks were studied in 2001 and 2002. Following parasitological control the cases were divided into two groups: A

Gastrodiscoides hominis is a large fluke of pig and human and constitutes an important parasite of human in Assam, Indian, the Philippines and Southeast Asia. This parasite has not been reported in Nigeria and possibly other parts of Africa. This is a case report of a seven year old Nigerian child who presented with features of malnutrition and anaemia and was found to have Gastrodiscoides hominis and Ascaris lumbricoides. Following clearance of the worms there was tremendous improvement of the health status of the child. The detailed epidemiology of this parasite still remains to be studied i

BACKGROUND: Evaluating possible thromboembolic events in the non-human primate has traditionally required euthanasia, significantly limiting the ability to conduct longitudinal studies. We hypothesized that pulmonary angiography could offer a safe, reproducible, and non-lethal means to assess for pulmonary embolus in the non-human primate.
METHODS: Eleven rhesus primates were studied using standard pulmonary angiography techniques. Five animals studied had previously received humanized anti-CD154 antibodies (associated with thromboembolism risk) in the context of skin transplantation 2 years

Estimated associations between infections with different helminth species can be used to predict the proportion of a population infected with multiple species infections. This is an important measure of disease burden, as those with multiple infections are often at an increased risk of morbidity. In this paper, we investigate variation amongst the estimated associations between Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm, over a number of different spatial levels among schoolchildren in Cameroon. Associations between species were largely homogeneous within districts, provinces and e

A 32-year-old man presented with the chief complaint of severe cough. Examination of peripheral blood showed a marked increase in eosinophils. Chest CT demonstrated multiple ground glass opacities in both lungs. Bronchoalveolar lavage showed abundant eosinophils. Abdominal CT demonstrated multiple low attenuation areas in the liver. Liver biopsy with ultrasonography revealed severe eosinophil infiltrations around the portal veins. Serologically, a multi-dot enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (DOT-ELISA) and ELISA inhibition test using microtiter plates were positive for Ascaris suum. Thus, visc

The social pattern of geophagy (soil-eating) and its possible role in the transmission of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm were investigated in a rural area of South Africa between March 1998 and July 1999. Schoolchildren (median age = 10.7 years; interquartile range 8.3-14.8 years) were examined for geohelminth infection at baseline and re-examined 3 and 29 weeks after treatment with albendazole. Interviews were conducted with the pupils in order to find out about their socio-economic background and their behaviour regarding geophagy. Soil-eating was less frequent in boy

Human toxocariasis caused by Toxocara canis is common in both developing and developed countries and leads to visceral larva migrans with high morbidity and mortality. Ascariasis caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, too has global distribution and in India, high prevalence rate has been reported in Kashmir (J & K State). Both nematode parasites, Toxocara canis and A. lumbricoides require similar biological and environmental conditions for the development of eggs in soil. Therefore, the present study was attempted to detect the antibody response to T. Canis excretory-secretory (ES) antigen by enzyme

The most common infection of the hepatobiliary system and of the pancreas is the infestation with Ascaris lumbricoides. Pancreatobiliary ascariasis may present as recurrent biliary colic, acalculous cholecystitis, cholangitis, pancreatitis, or hepatic abscess. Although ultrasonography is a highly sensitive and specific method for the detection of the disease, endoscopy may have also therapeutical potential. The majority of these infections is registered in developing countries, but the number of reports from Europe and North America is increasing. So far there has not been any publication from

Over a period of 4 years (January 1993-December 1997), 509 patients were treated for abdominal colic with or without intestinal obstruction and a history of passage of adult roundworms either in the stool or in vomitus. All patients were below the age of 10 years, the youngest 6 months old, and were treated successfully with antispasmodics and normal saline enemas. When the pain subsided, an anthelminthic drug was given. Of 209 patients admitted to the hospital, 105 responded to conservative management and 104 (50%) required surgical intervention. The procedures included squeezing out of worms

Biliary ascariasis is common in certain geographical areas of the world. In India, it is common in the Kashmir valley and only stray cases have been reported from other parts of the country. Between January 1995 and May 1997, 14 patients with biliary ascariasis were seen at our centre, which is more than 1000 km from the Kashmir valley. The mean (+/- SD) age of the patients was 31.7 (+/- 6.1) years and all were females. None of them had been to a place known to be endemic for biliary ascariasis. Four patients presented with acute cholangitis, eight with acute abdominal pain and vomiting, and t
