Little is known about preexisting lesions in livers of children with pyogenic liver abscess (PLA). Study of these lesions may elucidate possible predisposing factors for the disease. In Vitória, state of Espirito Santo, Brazil, PLA in children is frequently associated with helminthic infections and eosinophilia. We hypothesize that nematode infection with larvae migrating through the liver is a predisposing factor for PLA, because the infection induces immunomodulation and likely trapping of bacteria in liver granulomas. In this report, we describe observations of 22 cases of PLA in children s

The intestinal helminthiasis and hematological status was assessed in 100 elderly residents of two low-land communities, one at sea-level and the other at 61; m, equally representative of men and women. These are beth low-income communities. The population showed a 48% helminth infection rate which consisted of hookworm, Trichuris, and Ascaris infection. The prevalence of each of the individual parasites was considered light to moderate and the intensity of infection was generally low in this population. A strong inverse association between intensity of hookworm infection and hemoglobin levels

This paper describes the longitudinal changes in height and weight of children in school grades 1-3 on Pemba Island, Zanzibar, a poor rural population in which parasitic infections and anemia are highly prevalent. Heights and weights of children were measured at base line, and 6 and 12 mo later, and were compared with U.S. reference data. At base line, the prevalence of height-for-age Z-score < -2 rose from 14% in 7-y-old children to 83% in 13-y-old children. Prevalence of weight-for-age Z-score < -2 in children < 10 y was approximately 10% or less. Median 6-mo height increments for Pembian bo

Hepatolithiasis, or the presence of intrahepatic stones, is prevalent in East Asia and is characterized by the finding of stones within the intrahepatic bile ducts proximal to the confluence of the right and left hepatic ducts. Bile stasis and bacterial infection have been incriminated as the major aetiopathogenic factors. Clinical features include recurrent pyogenic cholangitis, multiple liver abscesses, secondary biliary cirrhosis and cholangiocarcinoma. The goals of management include accurate localization of pathologies, control of biliary sepsis and the elimination of stones and stasis. U

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether successful deworming for 6 months in children with high levels of Ascaris improves physical growth.
SUBJECTS: Two hundred twenty-eight children (mean age, 9.7 years) in a highland Indian town in Guatemala.
DESIGN: Children were randomly assigned to receive albendazole or placebo at baseline and 12 weeks. Children and field workers were both blind to the group assignment.
OUTCOME MEASURES: Children's heights, weights, and mid-upper-arm circumferences were measured at baseline and 12 and 24 weeks. Fecal egg counts were taken at 0, 2, 12, 14, and 24 weeks to est

We present the real-time sonographic features of 19 surgically proven cases of hepatobiliary ascariasis, in which ultrasound examination was the primary modality used to achieve the diagnosis. All the patients presented with right upper quadrant abdominal symptoms. There were no false positive diagnoses. The "impacted worm" sign, reported here for the first time, presented in two patients as long curved, tubular, non-shadowing structures with echoluscent cores, in the distribution of the intrahepatic biliary ducts. Both of these patients died soon after surgery indicating poor prognosis in suc

Acute pancreatitis caused by Ascaris lumbricoides is more common in certain areas than is generally appreciated. We report a series of 42 patients, mostly young adult women, admitted to our hospital in Hunan Province, China, during the period January, 1983 to December, 1992. The diagnosis was based on the detection of worms by ultrasonography, and on the presence of severe upper abdominal pain and tenderness and raised serum amylase level without other apparent causes. Only 2 patients had necrotizing pancreatitis (4.8%). With our conservative policy, 40 patients recovered and 2 patients were o

The present review will examine epidemiological perspectives and be confined mainly to the results of those field studies published since 1975 in order to provide concrete scientific evidence of the effect of ascariasis on childhood malnutrition, particularly on growth. The field studies were done in many developing countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America, using cross-sectional and intervention studies in which anthelmintics were employed, with different dosing frequency and follow-up periods ranging from 33 days to 2 years. In general, a better nutritional status in terms of growth, lac

From January 1982 to September 1987, ten diagnosed cases of biliary ascariasis were collected among 8,160 cases who were admitted for biliary tract diseases in our hospital. It represented an incidence of 0.12% in our hospital. In our series, the patients' ages ranged from 33 to 68 years old, with a female predominances. The clinical impression on admission were those of biliary tract stone, infection or pancreatitis. Signs and symptoms of biliary ascariasis were abdominal pain, fever, jaundice, vomiting of round worms and distended gallbladder. Laboratory findings disclosed leukocytosis, mild

The association between schistosomiasis japonica and child growth was studied cross-sectionally in 1,561 males and females aged 4-19.9 years residing in an endemic region of northeastern Leyte, The Philippines. Stature, weight, upper arm muscle area, and sum of triceps and subscapular skinfold thicknesses were measured and related to presence of Schistosoma japonicum eggs in Kato stool smears and to the intensity of infection assessed by quantitative egg count. The presence of hookworm, ascaris, and trichuris eggs was also measured. Multivariable models were used to control for the effects of

A sudden decrease in milk yield, increased respiratory rate and occasional coughing were observed in dairy cows on two farms in spring 1991. Pigs were also kept on these farms, and pastures grazed by the cattle had been fertilised with pig slurry. Laboratory investigations of some of the cattle showed eosinophilia and high ELISA titres of antibodies against Ascaris suum. On one farm the clinical symptoms disappeared after the animals had been treated with oxfendazole and on the other farm the symptoms disappeared spontaneously with time.

Sixty-six permanent residents of Punjab, presenting with chest complaints and absolute eosinophil counts (AEC) over 2000 per cumm were investigated to find out the cause of high eosinophilia. Tropical pulmonary eosinophilia (TE) was responsible for high eosinophilia in 27 cases (40.9%), even in this region where filariasis is not endemic. Severe asthma (23 cases), allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA-5 cases), drug reaction (2 cases) and chronic eosinophilic pneumonia (2 cases) in adults and ascariasis (6 cases) in children were other main causes of high eosinophilia. It is emphasized

Programmes to control Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm infections have often been targeted at each infection separately, but the advent of benign and broad-spectrum anthelmintics suggests that combined control may be feasible. The extent to which the infections co-occur in communities will determine the need for, and potential benefits of, such a combined approach. This paper examines the comparative distribution of the three geohelminths in different geographical areas and shows that A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura have closely related distributions, while hookworm infe

The incidence, clinical disease and outcome of acute pancreatitis caused by ascariasis in an endemic area of Kashmir, India, was studied prospectively. Ascariasis was an aetiological factor in 59 of 256 patients (23.0 per cent) with acute pancreatitis. Worms had invaded the bile duct in 51 patients, the pancreatic duct in four and both ducts in four. Pancreatitis was mild in 46 patients and severe in 13. Associated pyogenic cholangitis was present in eight. Acute complications occurred in 11 patients. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was performed in all cases within 72 h

While various examples of rationale or benefits of ascariasis control could justify a necessity of control activity in a community, few practical index other than the egg prevalence or intensity of infection has been used to evaluate the efficacy obtained by the control activity. A literature-based retrospective study was undertaken to provide some numerical data on the decreasing morbidity of surgical ascariasis as a consequence of ascariasis control in Korea. A thorough review of literatures (1959-1990) on biliary and other surgical complications of ascariasis reported from general hospitals

Two cases of intestinal obstruction due to Ascaris lumbricoides infection are reported from Ishaka Adventist Hospital, in south western Uganda. One was a male aged two and a half years and another was a female aged twenty. They were both treated surgically with good results. A review of the literature also revealed that intestinal obstruction due to A. lumbricoides is a common complication, though other surgical and nutritional complications also seem to be common, they are less reported.

Hepatobiliary alterations found in an autopsy case of massive Biliary Ascariasis, are reported on histological grounds. Severe cholangitis was the main finding, but other changes were also detected, such as pyloric and intestinal metaplasia, hyperplasia of the epithelial lining, with intraductal papillomas and adenomatous proliferation. Remnants of the worm were observed tightly adhered to the epithelium, forming microscopic intrahepatic calculi. Mucopolysaccharides, especially acid, showed to be strongly positive on the luminal border, and in proliferated glands around the ducts. The authors

90 patients diagnosed as eosinophilia and pulmonary infiltrates with peripheral eosinophilia in PUMC Hospital from 1957 to 1986 were reported. The cause of the eosinophilia was unknown in 42% of the patients. Among these patients, hypereosinophilic syndromes (HES) were suspected in 11 patients. The most common presenting symptoms of HES were fever, skin lesions gastrointestinal symptoms and hepatosplenomegaly, the mean peripheral blood eosinophil count was as high as 25.6 x 10(9) cells/L. Biopsies of bone marrow and involved organs revealed extensive eosinophilic infiltration and severe necros
