Results of ultrasound imaging in 4 cases of ascaris migration into biliary tract are described. Certain aspects are typical of the nematode in the biliary ducts: triple line image, spaghetti appearance, mobility of image. Other important diagnostic ultrasound features are the labile and changing character of direct and indirect signs of the parasitic wandering of the worm. These findings provide ultrasonography with advantages over other methods of biliary tract exploration, less reproducible and heavier.

The Rangoon Children's Hospital (RCH) inpatient summary returns from hospital wards from 1981 to 1983 and the surgical operation registers from 1983 to 1984 were studied and analysed in relation to ascariasis morbidity. The majority (57.7%) of clinical manifestations of ascariasis responsible for hospital admission were due to intestinal obstruction, the next most common manifestation was intestinal colic (33.0%). Some of the common foodstuffs that assist in the transmission of ascariasis in Ibadan have been determined. The frequency of recovery of Ascaris ova in the different food samples examined varied from 9.6% in tomatoes to 25.6% in lettuce leaves. The indiscriminate pollution of Ibadan environment with human faeces enables the foodstuff consumed raw to serve as effective sources of heavy Ascaris infection which lead to other medical complications. The strategies for the control of Ascaris infection in Ibadan were discussed.

These studies were performed to see if the granulomatous response to a nonspecific stimulus was exaggerated. To assess the usefulness of endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERCP) in the study of acute pancreatitis, 101 of a possible 114 patients (89 per cent) with acute pancreatitis underwent ERCP after recovery from acute illness. In 81 per cent, ERCP was performed within two weeks of recovery. The biliary tract was successfully demonstrated in 87 per cent of the patients and the pancreatic duct in 73 per cent. In December 1980, a 26-year-old black man came to the Washington Hospital Center Eye Clinic with a unilateral decrease in visual acuity, vitreous inflammation, optic disk pallor, and a degenerated retinal pigment epithelium. A motile subretinal worm was subsequently found. Unlike an earlier series of 18 patients with diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis reported by other authors, this patient exhibited eosinophilia and a highly positive ELISA for Toxocara.

In order to elucidate the relationship between eosinophilia and IgE antibody production in parasitic infection, the degree of eosinophilia and IgE antibody levels to larval ES antigen of Toxocara canis were investigated in eight inbred strains of mice after infection with T. canis. A retrospective study of 316 patients with a diagnosis of intestinal obstruction admitted to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital over a 5 year period is presented. Two cases of presumed ocular toxocariasis are reported in 19-year-old college students. Five years experience of Endoscopic Sphincterotomy (EST) in Japan has been analyzed in 468 collective cases from 25 centres.
